Uncloaked by Wendy Owens

Little Red Riding Hood

I will honestly say that Red Riding Hood was not a favorite fairytale of mine growing up, but I really love this twisted tale. Ruby is dead. Ruby is a Hunter. Ruby has been training for an entire year so that she can protect herself and control her hunger. Yes, Ruby is considered a Vampire. She is an awesome character because she is confident, beautiful, cunning and strong. When her grandmother goes missing while searching for information about a new and improved, but quite illegal clan of wolves, Ruby goes out on her own to find her. In my opinion, this author does a wonderful job with character development in such a short amount of time. The pace is fast, which I really enjoy. I also found myself truly engaged since this story was highly original and well written.

Blayze & Ash by Jessica Sorensen

Beauty and the Beast

Oh, this story made me tear up a bit because it was truly beautiful and very original. Blayze is a woman who has big plans for her future, like going back to school and getting a good education. Her sister Ivy, couldn’t be farther in personality if she tried. Ivy is selfish, egotistical and craves wealth. When Blayze and Ivy have to move out of protection for their father, Blayze meets Ashford in a record store where they end up, outside of the states. Ashford is just like Ivy, but makes Ivy look a little watered down in comparison. He is pompous, gorgeous and seems devoid of emotion. Ash and Blayze are two lost souls with their own faults, but can they both learn to love those faults and can Blayze change the way Ash sees life—enough to actually let love in or will he remain a beast forever?

The Little Mermaid by K.R. Wilburn

The Little Mermaid
I love mermaids and this short story did not disappoint at all! Ana winds up washed up on the beach with what appears to be terrible gashes on her throat. After she regains some of her memory back, she understands that where once she had a beautiful tail—it has since been replaced by two human legs. Her father is a tyrant who is obsessed with power and he is also very anger when he realizes that she has hidden from him. Ana knows that she cannot stay hidden once her father sends terrible storms over the lands, sending many humans to their death. The only one who can save her is a human named Sean, but even he can’t be strong enough to defeat her father—can he?

Dance with Me by Tish Thawer

The Twelve Dancing Princesses

While this story was a little slower in pace, it was enjoyable and fun to read. Gwen and her two sisters have the desire to roam and have fun, but their father forbids any such actions. After the sisters’ mother died, their father has become cruel and unrelenting. Gwen, Jana and Adele find a hidden door that leads to a tunnel beneath the house. After parading through the tunnel for weeks at night to an unknown town, they find three boys that show them how to have some real fun. Once their father finds out about the nightly adventures, he hires someone to help find out where and how his daughters are escaping. Will the hired investigator find out where the girls are going before it is too late and they find themselves in danger?

Awakened by Kristen Strassel

Close-up of young sexy couple in ecstasyDarker is always AMAZING and totally worth the read—in my opinion, of course! Lani is a rock star. Darius is a rock star. Together, they are in a band called Wicked Intentions. While they are famous and on a pedestal in front of everyone, they are still manage to hide themselves away from everyone. One night with Darius and Lani is gone, her blood drained and her organs failing. He is the only one who can save her life, but at what cost? While she despise him or accept her fate?

Priceless by Sarah J Pepper

Rumpelstiltskin

I honesty could not put this short story down! I love this author’s writing style and her dark stories seem to put me in an awestruck trance of sorts. Declan Stilts and Emilie have a twisted past which causes a conflicted future for Emilie’s daughter, Piper. When Emilie finally realizes that she has nothing left to give other than the soul of her first born child in exchange for the love her life—she agrees without hesitation. Emilie is truly one vile woman, but Declan preys on her misery like a plague. When Piper is born, Declan knows that he must wait until she is of age before he can take what is his. He has always been watching her from a distance, but after bumping into her—he realizes that the tables have been flipped and he could quiet possibly have something to fear. But what would Rumpelstiltskin ever have to fear from a young woman like Piper?

The Snow Queen by Shannon Morton

The Snow Queen

I was absolutely fascinated by the characters in this short story; the author does a superb job with character development and the story is highly original and very dark. At the beginning, I was a little confused because everything is happening at a quick pace, but then it starts to slow down and the reader is able to understand the complexity and twisted nature of the story being retold. The story begins with a woman named Winter. She has been talking to the good doctor, Dr. Emilia Parks about her existence and the feelings that she has about being broken. Once she leaves the doctor’s office for what she believes to be the last time, the doctor smirks and tells her that she will never be an original, but always just another copy. Winter has no choice but to let Dr. Parks’ words manifest into something truly horrible, something unthinkable that will show the good doctor that her words are untrue. She begins her experiment with one man, a very popular football player, who only has eyes for her. When she becomes bored with him and very dead, she moves on to the next one looking for more of a challenge. Her thoughts are wretched and vile, but her character is spectacular and interesting. This story will have you holding onto the edge of your seat trying to figure out what is going through her mind—until the very end. Oh…and it’s so good!

girl, woman, autumn, beautiful, fashion, beauty, happy, hair, model, portrait, people, young, summer, face, autumn, female, teen, lifestyle, pretty, vintage, hipster, white, sun, person, blonde,I have always liked Rapunzel’s character, but here is another wonderful twist from the original story. Casey is destined to be a country singer. She is beautiful with long blonde locks and has a voice that has provided her with much success. When Kye Bender finds her and brings her into the spotlight as her agent, she believes that she has finally found everything that she has ever desired. Aiden, her ex-boyfriend has broken her heart and Kye tries to help her mend it back together. Just as Casey finally decides to break down that impenetrable wall and give in to Kye and his advances, he leaves to New York on a business trip. Little does he know that Aiden has found Casey and doesn’t intend to let her go and never wanted to leave her in the first place—a revelation unlike the letter that she received from him two years ago telling her the exact opposite! When they finally realize that their breakup was planned by someone else, things begin to get dangerous. Who could be behind their split and for what reasons?

Puss in Boots by Brynn Myers

Puss in Boots

This is a great story!! I even like the paranormal element in it. Evin is Victor’s key asset to being rich and famous. Evin is Victor’s daughter. Evin loathes her father and only wants to be free from him. When Victor receives a letter from a business associate who had passed away, there is a request to make his son successful by any means necessary. Marcus waltzes in with his baggy clothes and his nerdy appearance, but Victor insists that Evin start her work promptly without opposition and only then—can she be free. As Evin gets Marcus out and shopping for some new suits to clean him up, she realizes that Marcus is handsome, smart and totally lovable. Once Marcus finds out what she has done due to her father’s requirements, will he still want anything to do with her?

Rell by Amy Daws

Cinderella

What am amazing short story! This retelling of Cinderella is beautiful and original. I love that the pace is quick and the scenes are very vividly described along with each character and their development. Rell has lost her mother and her father, now residing with MD (step-mother) and two stepsisters which is conveniently calls the Silicone Sisters. I think that this name is hilarious and quiet fitting. Rell is a fashion designer with incredible talent, but she doesn’t realize it. Her sisters and step-mother criticize her every chance they get. It is only when she runs to the little stream behind their property, that she is seen for who she truly is—talented and beautiful. With a mysterious and handsome man, a fairy godmother and more excitement, will Cinderella get her happily ever after or is this yet another twisted tale?

Casting Crowns and Other Curious Things by Elizabeth Montgomery

Portrait of a young woman dressed as Alice in Wonderland, video game. This is such an awesome and twisted short story, a retelling of Alice in Wonderland. The Red Queen rules Wonderland. Wonderland is barren. The queen is evil and has come after her with an army of cardsmen. When the charge Tyden’s house, she hides while he fights. Tyden’s love for Alice is strong, yet he is still unable to defeat an entire army. Alice now has a job to do. She must rescue her one true love from the evil and vile Red Queen of Wonderland. How can she defeat someone whose heart is nothing, but cold and black?

Hansel & Gretel by Cameo Renae

Hansel and Gretel

This short story is very twisted and totally badass. I think that I had a similar feeling to this story as I did to The Walking Dead. Hans and Greta are forced to go above ground by ‘the beast’ also known as their father’s wife after being underground for much of their lives. This story harbors a lot of science fiction—the world has been obliterated by a massive radiation explosion. In its wake, many had to have vaccinations just to stay alive. Both siblings have been underground for thirteen years, but when they begin their journey—their sole mission is to find food and bring it back. What they find is difficult for them to grasp, but will their need to survive get them through the dangers that they run into?

Real Boy by Kellie Sheridan

handsome young man posing in business suit on grey backgroundI loved this short story which is a retelling of Pinocchio. Angela has a really hard time with a recent breakup and she sees an advertisement for the new technology that features a ‘real boy’ synthetic robot who can act like a boyfriend. Angela pays the hefty amount after meeting someone new several weeks later and then starts to realize that she may have made a big mistake. As she falls for this new man, Jack—Ty (the synth) starts to show signs of jealousy. Angela decides that she has had enough and erases his programming files—but now privy to his name, can this synth think for his own?

Jaclyn and the Beanstalk by M. Clarke

Jaclyn and the Beanstalk

What an awesome read! I really enjoyed reading this and would love to read more since it seems like this is just a beginning short story to a large adventure. Jaclyn makes a decision to go out looking for the monster’s treasure in the mountains. She has heard the stories before and her father has gone hunting, never returning. With her mother being deathly ill, she knows that there is no other way. She must venture into the world of the unknown if she ever intends to save her. With the help of some magic beans by a mysterious traveler, she is able to find the monster’s cave—but will she ever be able to get out alive or are the stories even true?

“Some of them are a bit dark, some are slightly twisted, and some just take the story to a whole new magical level.. Each author has brought a different perspective to an old tale and it was very enjoyable.”

“Fairy Tales that take a dark modern twist.” ~ Sassy Cats Book Review

review

I was provided with a copy of Fairytale Confessions in exchange for an honest review. These short stories are absolutely wonderful. They are captivating and alluring, but I have to say that I love dark fairytales. The darker, the better—in my opinion! My two favorites from this collection are Blayze & Ash by Jessica Sorensen and Priceless by Sarah J Pepper. I enjoyed every single one of these stories, finding myself lost in worlds that each author briefly creates for their characters. All authors have a fantastic character development and the scenes are very detail oriented. Some stories are a little slower than others; however, none of them lack fascination or failed to hold my attention. As a collection, Fairytale Confessions deserves an honest five star rating because it is full of creativity derived on twisted versions of original fairytales. These stories encompass the entire spectrum of emotions from love to hate, even pain and euphoria. I would definitely recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys dark fantasy, paranormal romance and science fiction. I would also like to note that I would most certainly love to read anything else written by any of these authors since each and every one has provided such a spectacular new perspective on an old tale!

Author Elizabeth Montgomery was born in Williamsburg, Virginia and raised a hop, skip, and a jump away in Yorktown, Virginia. She is currently raising four children and a husband while elbow-deep in the depths of the writing cave. You can often find her searching on Google for an appropriate, or sometimes inappropriate, photo to insert in any random conversation. If not on Google, or Facebook chat, she can be found drinking coffee (like any normal writer), eating Gummy Bears, baking fanciful cakes, reading (of course), or writing (duh). “I always wondered what authors meant when they said that their characters tell them what to write – I get it now!”
