Could Maura’s life get any worse? …turns out it most certainly can.

1

Isolated and sheltered by her lonely mother, Maura’s never been able to make friends. She seems to drive her classmates away—except for the odd times they pay enough attention to torture her—but she doesn’t understand why. Maura considers herself to be a freak of nature, with her unusually pale skin and an aversion to the sun that renders her violently nauseous. Her belief is only worsened by the fact that almost everyone around her keeps their distance.

Even her own father deserted her before she was born, leaving Maura alone with her emotionally distant mother, Caelyn. Even though Maura is desperate for answers about her unknown parent, Caelyn remains heartbroken and her daughter can’t bring herself to reopen her mother’s wounds. Or is there a more sinister reason Caelyn refuses to utter a word about her long-lost love?

When a cruel prank nearly claims Maura’s life, one of her classmates, Ron, rushes to her rescue. Darkly handsome & mysteriously accepting, Ron doesn’t seem to want to stay away, but Maura is reluctant to get too close, since her mother has announced she’s moving the two of them to Vancouver…nearly 3,000 miles away from their hometown of Indiana, Pennsylvania.

If life wasn’t already challenging enough, Maura begins to experience bizarre, physical changes her mother seems hell bent on ignoring, compelling Maura to fear for her own life. Vicious nightmares, blood cravings, failing health and the heart-shattering loss of Ron—as well as the discovery of a tangled web of her own mother’s lies—become obstacles in Maura’s desperate quest for the unfathomable truth she was never prepared to uncover.

Here are so fun interview questions!
When did you know you wanted to write books?
From about age five. I would always narrate things in my brain—all the things around me. I used to make up stories about people I’d see all the time. I even wrote a continuing story for my dance class that the teacher would read at the beginning of class every week.

What does your writing process look like?

The past year I’ve been doing a lot of editing for other authors. But that has kept me from writing. I intend for next year to be spent, predominantly, writing. It’s very sporadic right now, whenever I can fit it in, but I want it to become more of a fixed schedule. I like to write with music on or a horror movie on in the background, and also watching my bunbabies at play.

 Author Top 10 Fun Facts

I have four house bunnies, who are spoiled to death. They have their own room, filled with toys, off the living room. Tegan, Pepper, Butters & Beckett.

In college, I lived in a haunted house. The ghost would turn the light on (light bulb with a chain) in the front closet
every night at 9:00 PM. No one would ever believe me until they saw it. It moved other things around too in a non-harmful way.

When I was little, I was obsessed with Dinosaurs and used to have this little plastic set I played with all the time.

Eating gluten makes my Rheumatoid Arthritis go crazy, so I make all my cookies, cake and pizza dough with nut flours and can make pretty much anything you could make out of regular flour. Believe me when I say diet is what controls disease. I laughed at my naturopath when she first told me this, but then had to admit how wrong I was.

My favorite colors are red and black…together. I don’t have a single favorite, must be those two together. I try to make as much of my wardrobe as possible in these colors.

In college, I was in every club the English department had and between them and studying, had no free time. But they were nice enough my senior year to name an award after me, which they continued to give every year.

I wanted to write a book since the age of five, but once, I wrote a story for a Star Wars competition. My mother was so critical, I rewrote it (and the second one sucked), completely . I was nervous after that, and it took me six years to finish my first book, in large part because of that incident.

I can be competitive, especially when someone is mean to me. I took an idea to one of my English clubs in college for the upcoming alcohol-free mix off. One of the girls said it was stupid in a very snarky way, so I went to a different club. We did a whole Death’s Angst theme and even wrote a poem about how Death felt cheated, since no one was driving drunk that night. We had a little graveyard with names on the stones like, “Danny Drovedrunk.” We took Best of Show with the huge trophy, and the college kept our poem to use at future mix offs, since we’d followed the message they were trying to get across so well.

It’s my dream to move to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territories in Canada. I moved to Ontario from Vancouver when I met my husband and hate living here. I regret leaving the beauty of the west behind and hope next year to be living in this place, which is so beautiful and offers so much more opportunity. I think it would offer so much more writing inspiration too. Northern Lights are one thing I haven’t experienced yet that I’m dying to see in person. Plus, I love snow, so it’s a win-win.

I was a breech baby when I was born, and almost killed both myself and my mother at birth. The doctor let me go too far for surgery and she ended up being in labor for over 48 hours. Perhaps it was this early brush with near death that gave me such a love of the macabre.

Q and A with the Author

A lot of authors I have noticed have music as a way to help with their writing. Is this something that you have used as well? If not what are some things you have used?

I can’t work with music on. Some people think in images and visuals. I don’t. I hear my characters’ chatter, and music blocks it. It probably doesn’t help much that I’m the girl who has to sing along at the top of her lungs, which isn’t really great for concentrating on other things. When I start writing, if nothing interrupts me, I don’t need much help. I get lost for hours. My kids come home from school and I’m sitting there, braless with my teeth not brushed, because I sat to jot down that one little idea and never got up. Or I’ll be starving at 4 pm and then realize that I never stopped for lunch. I’m a little like the absent-minded professor once I get going.

Here are some fun author interview questions!
When did you know you wanted to write books?
I read a series of books about seven years ago that immersed me in their world so completely that I wanted to know
how the author did that. So I started researching and writing.
What does your writing process look like?
I come up with a hero, a heroine, three disasters, and an ending. I use the disasters as markers along the way and discovery write the story and characters. I’m a putter-inner. I cycle back through my story adding layers. Usually dialogue comes first, then I cycle back and add in the staging, then the emotion. I do all this as I write the story so that when I’m finished I have a pretty good story. Then I do one more pass adjusting all the details for consistency. Then I read again for typos and send it out to a few trusted readers. I make the changes they suggest, get it proofread and publish it.

Q and A With the Author

What does your writing process look like?

I generally come up with an idea, discuss it with my husband over 5 or 10 walks through the neighborhood. Once my idea is solid, I use Martha Alderson’s Plot Whisperer book to detail out and plot my novels. I then sit down and flesh out the story. Once the story is done, I send it to my editor for story line and content edits. This is when I either have to rewrite the entire story, or can get by with some minor chapter changes. Once we have a solid story we move on to grammar and line edits. It generally takes 2 or 3 rounds to get through these. Once grammar and line edits are done I lay out the book and then we do the final copy edit.

10 Random and Possibly Funny Facts About Ayr
I wrote my first novel in 2007 while on bed rest for seven months during the pregnancy of my second son.
Pompous Schemes is my 13th story published under the name of Ayr Bray, but my 14thpublished story.
I eat a 26.5 oz jar of Nutella spoonful by spoonful for every 35,000 words I write.
I love to learn, but I hated high school and college. If I could go back and do it all over again, I would graduate HS early get my degree online. Unfortunately those were not options back when I graduated. Also, I should have taken classes I enjoyed rather than those that seemed practical for an economic future. Now, I have a degree which is completely useless since I’m writing books full-time.
Pink is my favorite color.
I love to sail.
I hate … no, no, no, despise to cook and eat (other than Nutella). If I could just take a vitamin to get all of the nutrients and calories I needed to survive healthily and never have to cook or eat again I would buy it in a heartbeat. I would even be willing to give up Nutella, which is what I practically live on now.
I get remarkably little sleep because my mind is always busy with thoughts of new stories. I have 7 novels outlined and just sitting in a file waiting for me to finish them up.
I have been married to my own Mr. Darcy for 16 wonderful years. My Mr. Darcy and I have two awesome sons ages 10 and 8 who sometimes drive me crazy.
I love to travel. I sold my home and everything I own in 2012 and now I live and travel the USA with my husband and two sons in 240 square feet. I lived in 13 houses in 11 cities in 12 years. Now, in the past 4 years I have lived in 1 house in hundreds of cities and 37 states.
BONUS: My new office is only 40 square feet, but it is 40 square feet of floor to ceiling pure awesome sauce!

DelSheree Gladden was one of those shy, quiet kids who spent more time reading than talking. Literally. She didn’t speak a single word for the first three months of preschool, but she had already taught herself to read. Her fascination with reading led to many hours spent in the library and bookstores, and eventually to writing. She wrote her first novel when she was sixteen years old, but spent ten years rewriting and perfecting it before having it published.

Native to New Mexico, DelSheree and her husband spent several years in Colorado for college and work before moving back home to be near family again. Their two children love having their cousins close by. When not writing, you can find DelSheree reading, painting, sewing and trying not to get bitten by small children in her work as a dental hygienist. DelSheree has several bestselling young adult series, including “Invisible” which was part of the USA Today Bestselling box set, “Pandora.” The Date Shark Series is her first contemporary romance series, and her first book in her upcoming new adult series, The Ghost Host, will be releasing 2015.

Scorned by Andrew Hess

Andrew
Hess is a resident of Long Island New York. He debuted his first book,
Chamber of souls, in 2011. The Chamber was a unique free verse poetry
book that depicted the struggles of man as he falls into his own self
wallowing journey while struggling to find himself. Hess followed this
up with another book of poetry which showed a much darker side called;
Hall of the Forgotten.

Hess
has a love for mystery novels which was apparent by him taking a stab
at a fictional government conspiracy series; The Phoenix Blade. This
series has taken readers by storm by showcasing a group of vigilante 20
year olds that have been hired by the government to rid the country of
people that have evaded justice. The Phoenix Blade currently has
released the third installment of the series and was awarded Best Series
of 2014 by Indie Author Books.

Despite
living most of his life on Long Island, Andrew also spent five years
living in the Ulster and Dutchess County areas and returns several times
a year. His return trips have inspired him to create another intense
series depicting a female detective named Ali Ryan called, Campus
Killer.

Hess
is an avid blogger at TheWritersRevolution13.blogspot.com where he
promotes and interviews other authors as well as reviewing books of all
genres. He has partnered up with several companies to help showcase
authors from all over the world.

Hess
is also a frequent guest on the Anthony Charles Podcast, a show
dedicated to creative professionals as they give insight into their
works and the lives they lead; guests have included authors, comedians,
musicians, stuntmen, actors and producers.

Book Information

Two months ago, Abigail Johnson saved the life of the boy she believes is her destiny and defeated an army of demons that have pursued her ancestors for centuries. Now, she and Kye should be taking their place as leaders of the new generation of Gifted. But the curse they thought was broken has returned, and every minute together brings them closer to death. When remaining shadow demons attack again, the Dragons send Abby to Mexico. Being apart from Kye is slowly killing her soul, and it turns out she isn’t any safer here than she was back home. The shadows have tracked her, the locals expect her to help with their own demon problems, and the more time she spends away from Kye, the more she doubts the destiny that ties them together. When the demons destroy her safe house, Abby has no choice but to take the fight to them. But the arrival of an old nemesis throws their careful plans into disarray, and Abby and her friends find themselves facing new adversaries in a battle that turns fatal. This time, not everyone will make it out alive.

Q and A with Author

When did you know you wanted to write books?
When my youngest son started preschool, I happened upon a writing class
that sounded interesting. I’d always been a reader, but this interested me very
much, and I decided to give it a try. It snowballed from there, and I haven’t
looked back sense. That was about 11 years ago.

Excerpt

My cell phone buzzes as I scramble out of bed and bolt toward the bathroom to pay homage to the porcelain throne. Pain clenches my insides, leaving me moaning. I could swear I spend more time doubled over, wishing to throw up, than I spend upright—or even lying flat. And there’s no telling what tomorrow will bring. Except more of the same symptoms. Val promises
me there will be lots more of this. Joy. The phone buzzes again, Kye’s ringtone growing progressively louder until it stops altogether. He’ll call back, so I stay put, afraid that if I stand too fast, I’ll pass out again. My days have become an endless cycle of horrendous pain, passing out, and attempting to finish high school before I die. Some days, dying doesn’t sound like the worst
option. But I would like to graduate first. Feel like I accomplished something this time around.
When my phone buzzes a third time in as many minutes, I have to answer and save Kye a trip. I need to see him like I need to breathe, but I have to force some fluids into my system first—despite the potential pain it will cause. I get up slowly, rinse my dry mouth and splash water on my face, determined to make it back before Kye calls again. The wall is my anchor as I stumble to my room and collapse in a heap on the bed. Healing crystals dangle from each post, and pieces of other natural stones mingle among the potted herbs lining my room. Landon even drilled wires into the ceiling so Mom could hang Gram’s most
powerful gems. But none of it is enough. I pull the comforter over me, shivering. Winter has passed and we’re experiencing the balmiest spring in recent Jackson history, but I’m always cold. And in pain. And exhausted. Thoughts of giving up
hover in the back of my mind until the phone rings again. This time, I pick it up, managing a weak smile when Kye’s voice tickles my ear. “Please tell me something has changed,” he pleads, a desperate edge to his voice. “That you were downstairs noshing on disgusting potato chips rather than … you know.” “Sour cream and onion,” I manage, shoving
aside thoughts of any and all food and the consequential pain eating brings. “Tell me you’re getting better,” he continues, his voice softening. “Make me believe this is something that will pass, something we can overcome. Convince me we’re not dying.” “I was actually in the greenhouse, gardening.” He knows better, but it’s nice to pretend. “My herbs are thriving, and I’m
going to plant tomatoes in a few weeks. You wouldn’t believe what Murtagh’s done with the flower beds. He’s a botanical genius.” “Of course he is,” Kye says. “So those delicious carrots in the soup your mother sent over yesterday came from the
garden, right?” “Yes. All the vegetables and herbs were home grown. No one does vegetable noodle soup like Marian.” I lean against the wall of pillows, tucking the comforter up to my chin. “I agree,” he says. “Now tell me you ate some of that soup. Convince me there’s no way you’re going to the hospital for an IV this week.” Stifling a yawn, I stare out the window at the
sun-lit mountains. “I finished the whole pot. Marian was angry because I didn’t leave any for her and Gabe.”
“That’s my girl,” Kye says, sounding satisfied, if unconvinced. I haven’t been able to eat more than a few bites of anything for over a week, but the rest is true. My mom did make soup, and Murtagh really has been hard at work caring for my plants.
“About school tomorrow …” Kye starts. “I know we’re going to pay for it. Believe me, I’m so weak I can barely stand, and it’s been three days since you kissed me in that alcove. But I can’t breathe. Do you understand? Missing you is more painful than seeing you, so please don’t cancel on me. Please.” “Relax, babe. I’ll be there. Just making sure you’ve got Gabe covered.”
Gabe = part Dragon, part bodyguard, part babysitter, and total tattletale. He’s been assigned to guard me. All the freaking time. But he does genuinely worry, which is something I use to my advantage—frequently. “I’m going to develop a sudden, inexplicable need for a hamburger between sixth and seventh periods. A craving he couldn’t possibly deny.” “Good one.” “I know. Especially since it’s probably going straight in the garbage can so I don’t have to smell it.” “Are you sure he’ll go, rather than sending someone else?” “I’ll convince him that I don’t know how long my craving will last, and I need it right away. It’ll only buy us fifteen minutes or so, but …” Kye finishes my thought for me. “It’s fifteen minutes more than we’re supposed to have together.”“I’ll take whatever I can get,” I tell him. His answering sigh is shaky. “I feel like there’s an enormous hole in my chest when we’re apart like this.” “Me too,” I answer, reminding myself I should be glad for the small fragments of time we’ve learned how to steal. Eventually, there will be no more secret meetings behind the curtains in the auditorium, or blissful seconds in the janitor’s closet during lunch. Eventually, someone will see Kye sneaking into my room to hold me in the middle of the night after a particularly hard week, and they’ll send one of us away. At some point, parting will become permanent for us, and we’ll have to learn how to accept it. Somehow. Unfortunately, I’m afraid that point is coming very, very soon.
