ABOUT THE BOOK: How do you live with yourself when you don’t even know who you are? On a chill October night, a girl goes missing setting the small town of Oakridge on edge. James has spent the last five years running from a past that still haunts him to this day. Now he finds himself thrust back into a life he thought he left behind. Finding out his new home may be haunted and reconnecting with an old friend while being thrust into a murder mystery, James finds himself trying to figure out which end is up while questioning his own sanity.

**AUTHOR’S NOTE** Buried Secrets is a New Adult, mystery thriller with very little romance but heavy on the suspense.

He didn’t see AJ anywhere on his way to the school. He hadn’t been waiting for him outside the house, and he wasn’t walking along the side of the road, either. The whole drive to school was a gut clincher because as James passed the spot where he had picked up Virginia, the only thing he could think of was how bent on getting her into the car AJ had been. And when he passed the spot where he’d let her out, he remembered the fear in her eyes…and then how AJ had gotten out soon after. Had he followed her? Had he done something to her? Could AJ be behind all of this?
There is a very fine line between sanity and insanity. When you ask yourself, “Am I crazy for doing this?” Or “Does this make me look crazy?” Most people who have mental illness never realize that these questions apply to them and their behavior. The sane ones are always the questionable ones that typically have nothing to worry about…but what happens if tragedy strikes and those questions no longer bridge the boundary of restraint?
James is just one of those unpopular kids who falls in love with the most popular, beautiful girl in his school. Unlike most popular kids, Mercy Worthington is kind and does not ridicule James like the others do. Her boyfriend on the other hand…he has hurt James before, making it almost near impossible to get close to Mercy. After her disappearance, the town fades away as James and his family move away…causing him to leave his only friend AJ behind. With the town already being untrusting, it appears that James and his family have something to hide. In Ohio, his parents force him to see a psychologist about frequent nightmares…but then advises them to move back to the very place where James’ dream disappeared. Upon arriving back in the small town, he gets reacquainted with his old friend, AJ but then more girls start disappearing…and all the evidence leads back to him. Can James prove his innocence…prove that he has possibly been set up by his best friend who has become distant and violent? When James’ psychologist comes all the way from Ohio because of the recent disappearances, James discovers the truth about him and his family’s buried secrets. Will it tear him apart?

Valentine has a fantastic and short psychological novel that is well written and credible. This author pulls her readers in with the suspense of the story. While this story is quite predictable, it does flow steadily and remains easy to read throughout its entirety. Due to the content, it is recommended for a mature audience. If you are a reader of psychological thrillers, you may want to pick this up.
