“Come out, come out, wherever you are!”
Father Paladina knelt in his uncomfortable position beneath the staircase, eyes closed and struggling to control his breathing. Each gasp sounded like the cracking of a tree branch, and he couldn’t fight down an occasional sob of terror. His heart beat in his ears, and his veins seemed about to burst open.
“I can smell you, Priest. I know you didn’t run far. Where are you?”
The voice came from upstairs in the local priest’s office. Niccolo couldn’t remember a time in his life when he had been so on edge and afraid. It felt like a sickness in his stomach, as all of his muscles tensed simultaneously. It made his body shake, and he worried that he might throw up at any moment.
“We both know how this will end. If you come out now, I’ll do it quick. If you make me come and find you, though …”
Niccolo struggled to control his breathing as hot tears ran down his cheeks. He reached into his front-right pocket for the single item he kept there. His rosary, which he held between his fingers and pressed against his lips, praying as hard as he could for the strength to deal with whatever was happening to him.
Not to overcome it, though. Part of him—if he were honest, a large part—knew he was about to die alone in this church, and the only thing he prayed for was the strength to die well.
After all, right now, not only his life hung in the balance: so did his everlasting soul.
“This basement has no exits. I know this church. This is my church. Not yours,” the man—if still a man—said from just upstairs. “I never thought I would actually get to kill a priest here. This is delightful!”
What is he waiting for? Niccolo wondered, in fear. Tim Spencer—or whatever controlled him—seemed to enjoy taking his time. Every muscle in Niccolo’s body ached, and he had to fight to keep from sobbing. Why is he doing this? Why is he waiting up there?
It felt like he’d been hiding under the stairs forever, but it had probably lasted for less than a minute.
“We’re having fun, aren’t we, Priest?” Tim asked.
Niccolo couldn’t contain a shudder, and the movement caused his shoulder to bump against one of the boxes behind him. The noise it made wasn’t that loud, but to Niccolo, it rumbled like an explosion in the stillness of the basement.
If his pursuer heard, though, he didn’t let on. Tim hummed to himself as he took his first step down the staircase. It creaked heavily underfoot, and Father Paladina winced when dust fell on his head.
Another step; the sound of the boot on the stairs sounded like a nail in the priest’s coffin. Tim kept on coming, humming a tuneless tone, until the father could see muddy boots in front of his face.
“Priest? You know I’ll find you. You can’t hide from me.”
Niccolo’s whole body trembled, and the man had called it true. His hiding place seemed weak and pathetic now. As soon as Tim reached the bottom of the staircase, he would spy Niccolo. The priest had backed himself into a corner and had nowhere to go.
He shouldn’t have stayed here at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral alone. Should have gone with Father Reynolds to his home; splitting up had turned into a terrible idea, and one that might well cost him his life.

More about the books in the box set:
Protected by the Mountain Wolf
Book 1
Amara’s life changed the moment she was attacked by a group of wolves. She
was only 15 at the time, who could blame her for ignoring her
grandfather’s warnings? She quickly began to believe all those
stories he told her about the wolves who protected their town,
Strathford. The wolves who could turn into humans. Shifters, as she
learned they were called.

Ten years had passed since then, and Nova still couldn’t forgive himself
for letting the Valley Clan slip into their territory unnoticed. If
only he had been there in time. Since that day, he made a vow to
himself to protect her, no matter what happens. Though he didn’t
personally know Amara, he felt a connection to her after watching
over her all these years. With his curiosity growing each day, he
finally decided to visit her at work. He’d talk to her for an hour,
settle his curiosity and then never speak to her again. Or so he
thought…
Adored by the Mountain Wolf
Book 2
Two weeks after she started living on the Compound – the home of the
Mountain Wolves – Amara was getting anxious to return to her life.
She had a job, friends and family to return to. Not only that, she
had to make sure her sister was safe from her psychopath boyfriend,
Kal. If only she could tell Sadie the truth, that he was the wolf
shifter who wreaked havoc on Strathford for all these years.

As much as he wanted to protect her, Nova knew that he couldn’t keep
Amara from her life forever. He and the Mountain Wolves have been
vigilant in the fight against the Valley Clan, but they begin to lose
their footing as the attacks increase in frequency. When Nova is
reminded he has to protect his pack he has no choice but to bring
Amara with him, for her safety.
Mated to the Mountain Wolf
Book 3
Weeks after the war between the Mountain and Valley clans ended, resulting
in Kal’s capture, things were finally starting to get back to normal
for Amara. Well, as normal as they could be in preparation to marry a
wolf shifter. Before Nova and Amara they could officially be
considered mates, there were a series of trials that needed to be
passed. And if she were honest, the thought of failing scared her
more than anything. To make matters worse, her secret admirer just
began to tip the scale from flattery to all out stalker.

Even after Kal was captured, and the horrors Amara had faced in her life
were over, she still wasn’t completely safe. And that’s what angered
Nova the most. He just had to work that much harder at protecting
her.
Married to the Mountain Wolf
Book 4
The day finally came. Ten years ago, Nova would have never imagined that
he’d be standing where he stood today. With the odds completely
against him, this wasn’t even a thought in his mind. The first night
he saw Amara seemed like forever ago and now here he was, standing,
waiting for his bride to meet him at the altar. Amara. His Bride. His
Mate. With all of the shit that had happened over the past few
months, he was finally glad to see his woman happy, in all her glory.
He wouldn’t let anything interrupt this day. Today will be perfect.
For Amara’s sake.

Ten Years Later
Amara stood before her full-length mirror, gazing at her reflection. Her long, dark hair fell around her shoulders in thick waves, cascading down her back. Tugging on her black tee shirt, she tucked it into her jeans, and threaded silver feather earrings through her ear lobes. No matter what she added to her appearance, she couldn’t erase that haunted look from her eyes, or the shiny mass of scar tissue at her collar bone.
Compliments of the wolf she had believed didn’t exist.
The attack had affected her more than she was willing to let on. Her grandfather had been right, she’d known that now. They never should have been out after dark. And Becca was nearly crippled because of it. Poor, sweet Becca. It had taken her years to regain full use of her arm and for her to walk again. She still had to use a cane. Amara had hardly been able to look Becca’s parents in the eyes, she had felt so guilty.
And Zoe, well. Zoe had turned on her for a while, probably to relieve her own guilt. She’d come around, eventually, though not until sometime after high school. Now they only saw each other when Amara was at work and Zoe came into the bar to get a drink. Their relationship was strained at best, though they did try to behave cordially towards one another every year for Becca’s birthday. The one and only time they got along.
It was hard to remember everything that had happened that night. Zoe hadn’t seen or heard a thing before the first wolf attacked her. Then the others had joined in. By the time the two wolves went after Amara, both Becca and Zoe had been unconscious. Nobody had believed her when Amara swore up and down that a boy had saved her. They thought she had gone crazy.
  Maybe she had.
She’d gotten paranoid, she knew that for sure. She never went anywhere without a knife and had long since learned how to use it. She now believed every word her grandfather had spoken until his death two years back, and had soaked up all the legends their people had ever passed through the generations about the protectors of the town, of the tribe that once called Strathford home. The wolves that could turn into men.
Her entire life, she had believed them to be just stories. She had agreed with the rest of the town that her grandfather was a bit off his rocker, and only listened to him to indulge him. But now…now she wasn’t so sure. She knew what she’d seen. It had been wolves that attacked them ten years before, yes, but it had been a human who had lifted her up and carried her back to her friends. It had been a human voice she heard telling the other one to ‘Come on.’ And it had been human eyes that had stared down at her, almost like an apology. Dark, worried, human eyes, imploring her to understand.
That boy had saved her, she knew he had. She just couldn’t prove it.
Grabbing her bag, she slung it around her shoulder before slipping the knife into the holster on her leg and pulling her pant leg down once more. Sufficiently armed, she pulled on her coat, locked her front door, and set off at a brisk walk down the street.
Murphy’s was the local bar in Strathford, one of the main attractions for the unencumbered, unemployed, and unattached. Amara had been a bartender there since she’d returned from college to help her mother take care of her grandfather. It was only a few blocks from her apartment, so she had never worried about walking. No one ever bothered her, and she was armed, which was the only way she felt safe. Still, there were times when she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching her.
  Like tonight.
Quickening her pace, Amara was comforted that the only sound she could hear was the click of her boots on cement until she hauled open the heavy wooden door of the bar.
“Hey Sam,” she greeted the bouncer. Sam was a big, beefy man with a bald head and a soft heart, whose company she enjoyed very much. He took the I.D. from the girl in line and smiled at Amara with his big, goofy grin.
“Hey, Mara. Cold night tonight, huh?”
“Freezing,” she agreed, taking off her coat and hanging it on the hook behind him. “Mitch in?”
  Sam nodded. “Behind the bar.”
“Thanks.” Murphy’s didn’t usually get busy until at least eleven o’clock, and tonight wasn’t any different. The usual suspects sat in the booths having a late dinner, and a few of the college kids home on winter break sat at the high, scrubbed wooden tables, with a few of the regulars perched at the bar. When things picked up, every booth, stool, and table in the place would be full, Amara knew. And if she was lucky, her tip jar would do just as well.
Mitch, the owner—and Amara’s high school prom date—was standing behind the big oak bar, wiping down a set of glasses with a white cloth. He was tall, his chestnut brown hair falling into his eyes, and a crooked grin curling his lips. He nodded at Amara when he spotted her.
One of the regulars, a guy named Ole, turned around and leered at her. She could already tell he was a few drinks in, and knew from years of serving him booze that he was a sloppy drunk. “How ya doin’, Mara?” he asked, his words already beginning to slur.
Amara put on her best bartender’s smile. “Doing just fine, Ole. Doing just fine. Hey, Mitch, did my spirits order come in this afternoon? They were two days late because of the snow, and we’re running low on tequila.”
Chuckling, Mitch set his glass down and reached beneath the bar to pull out a bottle of amber liquid. “Checked in and unloaded. Shouldn’t have to worry about it for a while.”
“That’s what I like to hear,” she said, tying a small, black apron around her waist. She winked at the young guy at the end of the bar, knowing she could weasel a big tip from him if she played her cards right. With a smile, she asked for his order, then grabbed a bottle of whiskey and poured him a shot. She slid it down the bar to him, praying he would catch it. “Nice work, honey,” she purred, grinning when he blushed scarlet.
“Did you hear about the wolf sightings?” Mitch asked, keeping his voice down.
“I heard,” Amara replied darkly, feeling the familiar trickle of fear whisper down her spine. “How many is that this month?”
  “At least ten.”
“Damn. And what’s the Mayor doing, anything? Or the Sherriff?”
Mitch shook his head gravely. “You know they’re trying, Amara. You, better than anyone, know what wolves can do. They don’t want that to happen again. Trouble is, for every wolf they kill, it seems like two more of them come back. Don’t you have that one that keeps following you around? Have you killed him yet?”
Amara shifted uncomfortably. It was true, she did have a wolf who liked to lurk around outside her door. A gray and silver wolf, with dark, troubled eyes. Yet, even for as much as she hated his kind, she couldn’t help but think that this one was different. There was almost something…protective about the way he watched her sometimes. Like she was his to look after, though he never got too close.
Mitch eyed her knowingly. “Yeah. That’s what I thought.”
“Oh, bite me, Mitchell,” she shot back, but there was no heat in it. Mitch just chuckled.
As the time got later, the bar started to fill up, and Amara’s shift became the way she liked it: more work, and less chatter. She was just handing a couple of beers to a couple on a weekend trip when a stranger sat down in front of her.
He was dressed oddly for the weather Strathford was currently experiencing. Only jeans and a short-sleeved navy blue shirt. No coat, no hat. Almost as if the wintery cold didn’t faze him. His sleek black hair was slicked back out of his angular face, and while she appreciated the chiseled physique on the tall, muscular frame, it was his eyes that drew her in. Dark, tortured eyes that she swore she had seen before. And yet, she couldn’t quite place why he seemed so familiar.
“What will it be, honey?” she asked, taking the tip the couple had left her and sliding it into the pocket of her jeans. It was coated in dripped alcohol from the bar, but hey! Money was money.
The man stared at her for a moment, to the point where it was almost uncomfortable, until finally, Amara cleared her throat. “Whiskey,” he said, his voice deep and almost gravelly. She couldn’t help but find the cadence extremely sexy. “On the rocks. Make it a double, please.”
Oh, yeah, she thought. Definite sex appeal. Too bad most men found her wolf paranoia to be a turn off. She poured his drink and set it on the bar in front of him. “There you go, handsome.”
He watched her for a moment, as if he was deciding something. Then his lips curved in the echo of a grin. “Why don’t you have one for yourself?” he offered. “It’s on me.”
Interesting. “Don’t mind if I do. Thanks.” She held a shot of whiskey up, tapping her glass to his. She smiled. “Cheers.” Then she threw it back.

Cover Reveal: Manservant by Shari J. Ryan

Cover Design: MadHat Books

Release Date: May 15, 2017

Synopsis

I just wanted an easy summer job…

That didn’t happen. Now, I’m in a living nightmare as I work alongside this monster of a man with mesmerizing emerald eyes that look at me inappropriately every time I see him. To add insult to injury, he has a tan I just want to lick, and a butt worth drooling over every time he purposefully walks by me. But, he’s an asshat, and looks are everything. I mean, aren’t. LOOKS. ARE. NOT. EVERYTHING. Why do I have to keep reminding myself of this?

His job is to clean, cook, and tend to the house we work in. That’s why I call him the manservant. Oh, and because it drives him nuts. That’s what he gets for torturing me.

This is a story of little restraint, too much desire, questionable actions, no strength whatsoever, and the best sex I’ve ever had.

The question is: Do I fall for this crude manservant whose idea of a fun time is to tie people up and do obscene things, or do I give him a taste of his own medicine?

All I’m going to say is . . . Things get weird, then hot, then weird again, and—you get my drift.

Go ahead and laugh. It might not be so funny if it happened to you.

The Penance of Pride
Shadyia Ascendants Book 2
Shadyia’s Adventure Continues!
‘I will never leave you, and I will always come for you.’
Shadyia’s vow to her lover is put to the test when the Innocenti rise and
envelope the sisterhood she adores.
As the magician she aided hunts for the path to an ancient city, the new
madam of the Silver Rose strives to please the evil that has
promised, upon its freedom, to make her a queen.
Meanwhile, the adviser to the Innocenti prepares the final stage of his strategy
to crush the faith of the old gods. He needs but a bit of magic to
carry out his ultimate plan.
Magicians. Zealots. Madams. Whores. It’s all the same to he who waits within
the enchanted box. Soon he will unleash his servants, and every
horror of the abyss will once again consume humanity.

Aaron stopped the cart and jumped off. He walked to the back, gathered up Janell and carried her to the gate. Benjamin raced him there and franticly rang the bell. The minutes that followed passed in a blur of activity. Guardian sisters escorted them in, calling for Mrs. Amber, the palace physician. Sisters cried out as they saw Janell. The word spread and soon a crowd of weeping, angry or shocked women gathered round. Sleepy-eyed Mrs. Amber appeared and ordered them back. She asked Aaron to carry Janell to the nearest bed, a pleasure room off the west wing. Allowing only two assistants to follow, she placed guardians outside the door and told everyone else to wait.

The doors to White Hall flew open and Makayla stormed through with Thoria—as always—close on her heels.

“Who brought her?” The madam’s voice silenced the chamber.

Aaron stepped forward. “I did.”

The fury drained from Makayla’s face. “I see.” She smoothed her black dress. “What happened?”

“Innocenti raped and tortured her,” Aaron replied evenly.

Makayla’s long black hair covered half her face as she tilted her head. “Unfortunate.”

Shadyia’s fists tightened at her side. “Unfortunate? That’s all you have to say?”

“No, Sister Shadyia, that’s not all I have to say. We will tend to Sister Janell’s wounds as best we can. In the morning, I will prepare a letter of complaint against the Innocenti and have it delivered to the magistrate. They will see those who committed these acts are brought to justice.” Makayla turned and walked toward the audience, her heels clicking.

Shadyia allowed her a few steps. Not so fast, bitch. “Maybe they’ll start with you.”

Deresi, the sisters, guardians, Benjamin and Aaron stood as statues as Makayla halted. She rounded on Shadyia. “Watch your tongue, Sister, or I will have it removed.”

Shadyia’s rage coiled like a serpent about to strike. If she had kept the blacksteel sword and not hidden it in the wagon, they’d be cleaning Makayla’s blood off the walls and floor for a week. “Give that command and I will kill you and any who try to carry it out.”

Thoria drew her baton and advanced on Shadyia. Aaron rushed forward and intercepted the blond guardian with his body.

“Madam, please call away your guard.”

“Thoria, step back.”

Her scowl locked on Shadyia, Thoria obeyed.

Makayla put her hands on her hips, her long sleeves hanging down. “Speak your mind, Sister. Why do you say such a thing?”

“If you hadn’t sent Janell to the Kaolins, she wouldn’t have sought refuge with the Innocenti.”

“And if she had carried out my command, none of this would have happened. What sort of fool asks the Innocenti for anything?”

“The sort that cannot see them for what they are,” Shadyia replied. “The sort that thinks they are knights from a fairy tale. The sort that talks about joining them—” She leveled her finger. “—as you knew perfectly well!”

Makayla huffed. “You dare accuse me of deliberately driving Janell to the Innocenti?”

“I do.”

Benjamin spoke up. “She didn’t go to the Innocenti. She came to me last night.”

Makayla pivoted toward him. “And who are you?”

“I am Aaron’s apprentice, Benjamin.”

Her hazel eyes moved from him to Aaron and back. “So how did she end up with the Innocenti?”

Benjamin looked to Aaron, who shook his head once.

“We got separated in the city this morning.” The young man dropped his gaze.

Makayla faced Shadyia. “And do you also blame me for this, Sister?”

“I do not,” Shadyia replied. Damn the boy and his honesty.

“The hour is late and our nerves are raw,” Aaron said. “Madam, please take the finest care of Janell. I will personally cover any expense.”

“Consider it done.”

“Madam,” Benjamin said, getting her attention, “may I stay with Janell?”

Makayla sighed. “That will be up to Mrs. Amber, but we will prepare a room for you in any case.”

“Thank you, Madam.”

Aaron stepped near to Shadyia and lowered his voice. “Why don’t you and Deresi come with me to Featherquill?”

The dying rage in Shadyia still seethed, but she looked to Deresi. Did she want to visit Featherquill? Deresi nodded in agreement.

Aaron turned back to Makayla. “Madam, may I have the pleasure of both Sister Shadyia and Sister Deresi this night?”

Makayla raised an eyebrow. “You wish them both, sir?”

“I have lots to celebrate.”

“These sisters look disheveled and exhausted, sir. May I ask how they came to be in this state?”

Shadyia glanced at Aaron. He mustn’t mention the labyrinth or—

“It’s my fault, Madam,” Aaron said. “We played a game in some ruins beyond the forest. I wanted Sister Shadyia to hide and I would search for her. Sister Deresi was concerned when her friend didn’t return and found us this morning. I invited her to play and…well, things got out of hand. My apologies.”

“None needed, Master Aaron. The coin you’ve offered more than pays for their services. But, do you not wish them bathed, perfumed and properly dressed before they leave with you?”

Aaron glanced at Shadyia and Deresi. “To be honest, Madam, I rather like them in this state and I’m not yet finished with them. By your leave, I will take them as they are.”

The Shadyia Ascendant Book Series is the kind of fantasy book I wanted to
read, but could never find. Sexy, powerful, positive.
The heroes are beaten, but are never broken.
Although this is a medieval setting (more or less 15th century Renaissance),
the characters don’t scratch at fleas and trug through the book
ass-deap in mud and blood and disease. I’m sure all that is
accurate, but I never wanted to read about it.
I wanted magic that is rare, women that are bold and beautiful,
mysterious magicians with a hidden agenda, and gods that move mortals
about like pieces on a chessboard. That’s the book I wanted.
I was inspired by the fantasy writer David Gemmell in terms of pace.
When you read one of his books, you get your money’s worth. He
won’t spend eleven chapters with this characters arguing in a
castle. The term “I could never put it down” fits a Gemmell book
perfectly, and it’s what I have striven to accomplish in the
Shadyia Ascendant series.
Get ready for a sexy adventure you won’t soon forget!

They lack Starr’s intelligence, but no matter, they possess their own weapons of persuasion along with a flair for the dramatic, and that’s never a bad thing.
Di, along with Christian, Frank, Ben and Coda, are determined to keep Starr safe, but the depths of betrayal crack the very foundation of the team. When Starr becomes a pawn in a game of power, money, and manipulation, Di channels her WWSD (What Would Starr Do) to rally the team. She owes her best friend that much. No… More.

Kim Briggs once smashed into a tree while skiing. The accident led to a concussion, a cracked sternum, temporary notoriety as a sixth grader returned from the dead, and the realization that fictionalized accounts are way more interesting than just slipping on the ice.
An unhealthy obsession with conspiracy theories combined with a love of travel and happily ever afters led Kim to write her YA novel, Starr Fall, where a secret organization decides 17-year-old Starr Bishop is not only the model student, but the ideal assassin. While in hiding, Starr meets dark, moody, and dead sexy Christian Evergood. Cue the swoon worthy music. But it’s not all happily ever afters for Kim. Her NA novel, And Then He, explores the dark and scary corners of the human psyche. His feet, still shod, dangled from the edge of the bed. His legs were slightly splayed, and where they came together… Holly looked away even though she knew then, she was just pretending again. Her own clothing, the old jeans and worn flannel shirt, both perfectly soft, began to feel like starched canvas.Like a wool straitjacket. She pulled the tail of her shirt out and let it fall loose. It helped a little, but there was no denying that the tension was not really in her clothing.No. No. No.Her mind raced as she went to her knees and began untying Jason’s shoes. Her fingers only told her yes, and they spoke in measured cadences, a slow military march of sensation that could not be opposed. When Jason’s feet were bare, Holly stood. She thought about removing his pants but was afraid that would be going too far.And not far enough. She backed to the door. Her feet were slow, as if she were walking against a current.“Wait,” Jason said. His voice was clear and firm, but Holly still struggled against the current. It was easier to fight than to give in, because she knew that there was so much more to changing her direction than simply wanting to.“Please,” he said.“I can’t.” Holly hesitated at the door frame, half in the room and half out. Half in the light and half… For the first time she looked at his eyes. They were open and questioning.

He gently guided her so that she faced him straight on and took both of her hands in his. “When I look into your eyes and see myself reflected there, I want to be the man you fell in love with. The man you need me to be. The man you deserve.”
Every word pierced her heart like arrows, as if he were trying to reinsert himself there. What he didn’t understand was that he already lived there. He would always live there, whether she wanted him there or not.
“The past year and a half has been the worst time of my life,” she said. “But I’ve dealt with almost all of it: Joey’s death, Eileen’s death, the shooting, this fucked-up world we live in. I’ve even come to grips with my shitty childhood. I’ve processed it all—except you.” A painful little cry slipped past her lips. “I don’t know how to process you or what you’ve done. I don’t know if I can.”
“I don’t want to be dealt with or processed, Katie.” Agitation fueled his voice. “I want to be forgiven, and I want you to love me again.”
She shook her head. “It’s never been about love, Billy, I told you that. In spite of everything, I’ve never stopped loving you. I just don’t know if I can forgive you. Or trust you.”

Book Tour: Beneath the Night by Jen Colly

BENEATH THE NIGHT
by Jen Colly
Pub date: 4/25/2017
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Sometimes survival means surrendering everything . . .

Lord Navarre Casteel wakes from a long sleep to

find the vampire city he rules forever changed and his future in the

hands of a mysterious beauty who offers her life for his.

Fiery-haired Cat survives his feeding, fueling Navarre’s body and

mind—as well as his suspicion that she is one of the Forbidden—a

lethal mix of vampire and human blood. Yet that doesn’t stop the

throb of Navarre’s desire, the feeling that she is destined to be

his mate, to hell with consequences. . . .

A solitary fighter sworn to protect the

children in her charge, Cat never expects to feel so much for Navarre

in the face of his savage feeding. Which is why his offer of

protection is nearly her undoing. For how can she let down her guard

when she has always walked alone? But Cat has never faced an enemy

like the one she faces now, never felt such a powerful need to

surrender to the force of love . . .

Peace. He didn’t care for the word, didn’t believe in its existence. The

concept seemed possible, and certainly desired, but he’d yet to witness it

in his own life. Even when Balinese had been under Lord Navarre’s rule,

the city prospering and harmonious, Devlin Savard had not been at peace.

Savard glanced over his shoulder for the second time tonight. Something

had him on edge. He scanned the tree line at his back. Nothing.

From where he stood, high on a hillside, the impressive château below him

seemed somehow benign. Yet it concealed the entrance to Balinese, a vast

underground city of vampires. The forest surrounding the château took it a

step further, cloaking the stone structure from any who might wander near.

Winter was well on the way, and though snow had yet to fall, it would

come soon enough. The château had been sealed and prepped months ago,

and only in the last few weeks had the chill of the night permeated the

ground and seeped into the city below.

Savard cocked his head slightly. A low ripple of energy in the air sent

his senses on high alert, rousing survival instincts that had refused to fade

over time. Someone, or something, approached.

He curled his fingers around the hilt of his sword, but then the shift in

energy became substantial and settled at his right side. Heavy, like waves

on the ocean. Then, though the air around him was already cold, a chilled

patch of air pushed toward him.

“Report,” Savard commanded. Keir dropped out of his invisible Spirit

form and appeared at Savard’s right.

“You’re damn hard to sneak up on,” Keir said, and then suddenly

thinking better of his words, he raised his hands in mock surrender. “Not

that I was sneaking.”

Savard nodded, but said nothing. It was best others didn’t know how

Savard’s talents worked, especially when he knew of no other who possessed

a similar gift. In Spirit, Keir moved with a certain high-energy fluidity,

something Savard had yet to encounter in another vampire, and was

easily recognizable.

Finally glancing at the man who had joined him, Savard asked,

“What did you find?”

“Nothing,” Keir said, supremely confident in his own abilities.

Savard simply nodded.

“I give you the same answer every night. Seven years of nothing. You’re

not paying me to say ‘nothing’ to you every night.” Keir scratched his chin,

the goatee darkening his already sinister look. “You bought my loyalty.”

“Have I?”

Keir cracked a grin. “Yeah, you have.”

“Perhaps.” Savard looked over his shoulder, once again peering deep into

the forest, but still finding nothing amiss. “One day your answer will change.”

“And when it does?”

“Then everything will change,” Savard said, his tone even, expectant.

Jen Colly is the rare case of an author who

rebelled against reading assignments throughout her school years. Now

she prefers reading books in a series, which has led her to writing

her first paranormal romance series: The Cities Below. She will write

about anything that catches her fancy, though truth be told, her

weaknesses are pirates and vampires. She lives in Ohio with her

supportive husband, two kids, one big fluffy dog, and four rescued

cats.
