Tessa Armstrong has one more summer at home before heading off to college with her best friend. She’s been counting down the months, waiting to be free of her overbearing brothers and overprotective father — not to mention getting out of the small, suffocating town she’s grown up in.

The one thing Tessa doesn’t count on is falling in love, least of all with Brock Miller. He’s the kind of boy her father has always warned her about. He’s older, mysterious, and a little dangerous. Brock has had a hard past, and the whole town not only knows it, but won’t let him forget.

Brock has come back to take care of his ailing mother and struggling younger siblings. He doesn’t have time to fall in love, especially with one of the town’s darlings, but sometimes, love comes fast and fierce.

Can Tessa and Brock find a way to each other despite their pasts and the obstacles their families present?

J.C. Hannigan lives in Ontario, Canada with her husband, their two sons, and dog. She writes contemporary new adult romance and suspense. Her novels focus on relationships, mental health, social issues, and other life challenges.

A Doorway Back to Forever by Nanette O’Neal

Best friends share everything, right? Unless it’s a secret that could cost them their lives.Robyn and Kit are born with forbidden magic-sense, the power to see and hear beyond Earthly sight and sound. It’s a curse that haunts them, but the girls are strangely drawn to it—could there be more to this power than they’ve been told?

When they spill their secret, it opens a doorway back to Forever—a beautiful realm where magic-sense began. They learn the truth: they have been given a noble gift. It connects them to the Skyborn royalty of this new world. They’ve been summoned back by the forces for good to preserve the kingdom and revive the power where it once flourished—on Earth. It can thrive again, if Robyn and Kit are brave enough to follow
However, the doorway awakens more than magical fairy-tales. A dark force is unleashed—one that has battled the Skyborn since time began, and it wants the girls dead, the Earth destroyed.
Beyond the doorway is where the adventure begins—trickery, kidnapping, a prison break, rescue teams, sword fights, magical gold-dust, holographic medallions, and singing orbs—but only for those who have the courage to believe.

Nanette O’Neal has had a long time passion for the idea behind the Doorway series, stemming from her faith and her love of story. Character Casting

  1. Robyn is a twelve-year-old girl with a long black braid/ponytail and glasses. Her next door neighbor who has pet names for all the kids, often calls her “licorice stick” because of her braid, and whenever she thinks deeply about something important, she pushes up her glasses before acting upon her decision. She plays the violin, likes black and white cookies, and loves the marigolds in her neighbor’s flower garden. Robyn’s father travels a lot, her mother doesn’t treat her well, but her brother is kind and makes up for it. She also has a little sister who likes to interrupt her privacy. Robyn once had a spectacular imagination, but she learned it could cost her life. She became a loner because of the secret she protects—she has “magic-sense,” the forbidden power to see and hear beyond earthly sight and sound. She remains a loner because of it. That is, until she meets Kit.
  2. Kit is a spunky new girl in town, same age as Robyn, who has bouncy strawberry-blonde hair. She plays the cello and needs a new friend. She loves to eaves-drop on her parents, especially lately because she suspects her family had fled their former town because of magic, but she can’t prove it. Ever since she found an old book about magic in the attic, she’s been hearing strange voices when no one is around. She suspects she has magic-sense, but she doesn’t dare tell anyone. It would freak out her parents who she’s overheard arguing about magic, and her little sister and brother might face danger if they knew. But her new friend, Robyn, might be a good person to confide in.
  3. Cam is Robyn’s older brother. He has black wavy hair, he’s lean, short for his age, and he protects Robyn when he can. Whenever he says something cute or funny, he bounces his eyebrows at Robyn—always twice. He’s a sophomore in high school, plays football, and spends a lot of time at practice. He is a born leader, but his humility makes him easy to get along with. He would be a great person for Robyn to confide in, because he knows more than she realizes.
  4. Fischer is the neighborhood watchman. He’s a seventy-seven year old veteran who has a full head of white hair under his baseball cap. He has three dogs—a German Shepherd, husky, and a spaniel, that often take him for walks and like to give the neighborhood kids face-washings. He wears a medal from the war, tucked under his t-shirt, and he is very protective of the old-timers in town. He tends his flower garden with giant African marigolds, alternating yellow and orange, and he knows how to stand up for his heritage even when the local police detective tries to give the neighborhood baker a hard time. He remembers the days when magic flourished on earth, but he dares not speak about it, for fear of getting arrested.
  5. Prince Calemir is the son of King Barsoum and Queen Elise, who live beyond the doorway in the Kingdom of Forever. The royal family is of the Skyborn people who live beyond the doorway, charged to bring people to remembrance of this world. Prince Calemir is the picture of goodness and hope. He has a strong chin, shoulder length hair, and eyes that dance with all the colors of the rainbow when he smiles.  He wears his trousers tucked in his boots, a billowy shirt, a sash, and a sword. His cloak is like no other garment—it is white, yet deep in the folds are threads of gold, silver, and all colors in the spectrum that glisten and shine as he moves. They flash in and out of sight when the cloak is moving, then disappear to white when it is still. He rules over the Kingdom of the Morning, and he hopes to unite the kingdom of Midnight again with Forever.

Sylvare, Lord Midnight, is the vilest of villains. He is the opposite of Prince Calemir in manner and appearance. His hair is short and jagged, his eyes sunken, and he has a scar that stretches from one eye down to his jawline. He wears a dark cloak which hides the weapons and potions that are belted around his waist. He would not hesitate to destroy his own followers, and he uses fear to intimidate them. He was banished to live in the desolate realm of Midnight after losing a battle with the royal family. Since then he has looked for Bloodborn recruits to join his cause. He has a threefold desire—destroy Prince Calemir, take over the Kingdom of the Morning and all other lands, and find the family that caused his banishment back in the Before-Time.

“You heard your mother,” her dad said. “It’s bedtime. Good night.”

Kit muttered to herself. “Sure, now that things are getting good. Always sending me to bed. Like I’m still a little kid.”

She had found an awesome hiding place—molded in the living room couch behind the stack of boxes. It was perfectly out of sight from her parents sitting in the kitchen, but not out of earshot. Listening in on their private conversations had been a game she had mastered when she was ten. At first, it had been to find out where they’d go on vacation, or what kind of punishment her little brother, McCoy, would get for trying to teach the cat to swim, but ever since she turned twelve, things had gotten serious. Last month, the conversations were less about family things and more about scary things—things she thought might have to do with their need to move so suddenly.

She wasn’t looking forward to it. If she could only listen a little longer, she might be able to figure out what was going on. She huffed again, a little louder this time. There was no use arguing when her parents banded together. Her plan was a wash, and she’d have no chance to overhear anything. She rolled her eyes and clomped down the hallway.

Kit shut her bedroom door hard enough to make her anger known, but not enough to wake her younger sister, Shirley. At least in the new house, she’d have her own room. Maybe I can still hear. She opened the door, letting in a sliver of light from the kitchen. She turned to allow for ample hearing space, tucked her hair behind her left ear, then froze in place. She could hear a few things, but not enough to make out anything juicy.

Wait—what was that? The rustling of papers from inside her room distracted her. Shirley was still asleep. The window was closed. What could have made that noise? She squinted in the darkness and brushed her hair back again. A presence entered the room—chilling, menacing—one she couldn’t see, but could feel as if it pressed against her. A tingle ran through her bones. She shuddered at the eeriness—it was overwhelming.

The unknown figure let out a dark laugh that echoed through the room and made the hair on her arms stand up. A voice followed, deep and full of vengeance.

“They thought they could banish me forever—fools, all of them. Underestimating my power and intelligence was their first mistake. Well, they’ll be sorry. I have the power now to destroy them and their precious legend.”

Q&A with the Author!!!
When did you start writing, and was there a specific event or person who influenced you to become an author?
I’ve had stories running through my head since I was a little girl. I played around with writing short stories in college but no never anything
seriously. Then, in 2010, I decided to see if I could even write a full-length novel. Did my own NaNoWriMo in January and wrote 80,000 words. And I was hooked.

Are you currently working on a project, and if so, can you tell us anything about it?

I’m working on a novella right now for the Sweet & Sassy anthology. I’ve been enjoying getting to know the characters and having fun
figuring out how I want them to get to the end I have in mind. I’ve also got the first drafts written for three novels (the 3rd book in the Safe
Harbors series and a YA portal fantasy duology). Very different from each other.
My top favorite (nonreligious) things:

Q & A with the Author:

What is the thing you struggle with
the most while writing? And how do you defeat it?
Putting other things ahead of my writing is always a struggle. Though my
love is writing, and my goals center around my writing projects, getting up
everyday and DOING what I love is a challenge. There are always other things
that “need” to be or “could” be done. My best defense against not working on my
writing goals is deadlines and accountability. When I tell someone else I am
going to achieve a deadline, I am more likely to push myself to meet that
deadline. If I am the only one who knows about the timeframe, it can too easily
slip. I need accountability and I thrive on it.
Which of your personality traits did
you write into you characters? (Deliberately or accidentally)

All of them! Since my book is a personal memoir, my traits (good and
bad) are evident, both through my “character”, as well as through some of the
storylines I chose to focus on. Yes, part of me is a perfectionist and control
freak. That is highlighted in my story when I lost control of my life and
health due to a brain tumor.

Excerpt #2
Chapter 19 — Pinned
The wrestling match began when the sun went down. Exhaustion gripped
first, flipped me upside down and pinned me against the night. Pain grabbed
hold and wouldn’t let go, tag teaming with despair to assure victory.
The spinal fluid leak and the on-again-off-again fevers created restless
days and endless nights. That evening, the ache in my head was worse than
Throbbing pressure lunged in and caught me in its clutch. Floundering
under the weight, I tapped out the only way I knew how. I pressed the small
button, and a saintly referee appeared at my bedside.
The night nurse with round pink cheeks and wavy russet hair appeared at
my corner with words of encouragement. But she informed me the medications were
maxed—no time-outs left.
Choking on tears, I sobbed, “I’m done. I can’t do this anymore.”
But she did not give up on me so easily. Brenda took my hand as aches
racked my body. Minutes ticked on, and agony threatened to consume me. But
Brenda held tight and didn’t let go.
An hour passed, and still the silent saint stood by my bed. With one
hand, she caressed my arm and stroked my head. With the other, she held my left
hand and never let go. She did not smile, but the corners of her mouth were
turned up and her eyes met mine at every glance.
Time slipped slowly away, and desperation with it. I hurt in ways I
could not describe to Brenda. Pain played the vigilant opponent, always there,
watching for my weaknesses, ready to attack. But that night, my rival did not
win. Brenda didn’t leave until the match ended. The physical torment remained,
but the desperation fled.
Brenda’s silent support saved me when my own strength did not.
By the time the first rays of light peaked through my window, I realized
again that angels do not always wear wings or flowing white robes. Sometimes
they appear as wrestling coaches or nurses in green scrubs.

During my weeks in the hospital, Brenda was my nurse for only one shift,
a fact I do not attribute to coincidence.

Whistleblower by Alysia S Knight

“Marley Reynolds’ flight with proof to stop the pharmaceutical company she works for from releasing a drug that could kill thousands of soldiers lands her in the arms of a man she has no idea how to handle.     Ex-Army Ranger, Zan Master, had given up on finding the right woman for him until she runs into him, literally.  Now, he just has to keep her alive long enough to blow the whistle for them to enjoy the love they found.”

I grew up in a small town in Wyoming loving the outdoors, sports, art, and
reading Hardy Boys books. After reading them all at least a half dozen times, I
started writing my own stories.
Thirty years ago I married a wonderful, honorable man. I’m mother of five children and
grandmother of seven boys. I love traveling. Through my husband’s work and
vacations, I have visited much of the United States, all over Eastern Europe,
Canada, Mexico, China, Thailand, Cambodia and Australia, giving me many
intriguing locations and experiences for my stories.
I am a storyteller. I write the classic hero story because I think there’s a need
for more heroes, love, and adventure in our lives. I’m not out to change the
world with my writing; I’m just hoping to make your day a little better.
Hope you enjoy.

He kissed her temple, bringing her tighter. Funny, to him it felt natural. He’d spent most of his life with people trying to kill him, though the reward was much more personal to him now. “Just have faith in me.”

“That’s the only thing I do have.” She raised her head meeting his gaze, love and trust shown in her eyes for him to see. “Why couldn’t we have met in some nice normal way, like running our carts into each other at the grocery store?”

“Maybe, because we weren’t looking, so fate had to hit us over the head.” He gave her a lop-sided grin.

“You believe in fate?”

“I believe certain things are meant to be. And I believe I was meant to find you.”

A graduate of the University of Michigan with a major in history, Cora is the 2014 winner of the Royal Ascot contest for best unpublished Regency romance. She went on a twelve year expedition through the blackboard jungle as a high school math teacher before publishing Save the Last Dance for Me, the first book in the Maitland Maidens series. When she’s not walking Rotten Row at the fashionable hour or attending the entertainments of the Season, you might find her participating in Historical Novel Society events, wading through her towering TBR pile, or eagerly awaiting the next Marvel movie release. Mr. Benedict Grey is the only heir to a long-standing title, and he knows his duty: find a suitable girl, get married, secure the succession beyond himself. But if a gentleman could be called a wallflower, Benedict would fit the description perfectly. And for the past six years, he’s been out of Society more than he’s been in it. How will he find a woman to wed and bed when he can barely converse with the ladies of the ton?

Lady Honoria Maitland has promised her dying father that, before he breathes his last, she would find a husband to take care of her. But she wants a gentleman that loves her, not her dowry or her name. When she reunites with her old friend Benedict, she proposes a plan that will help them both: a faux courtship and betrothal. She can teach him how to woo a woman and simultaneously ease her father’s last days. But Honoria’s clever plan failed to account for Benedict’s heart…or her own. Is she strong enough to bear the loss of her father and her friend?

Snippet #2
She turned his free hand
palm-up and placed hers in it. “There are other positions in which to waltz,
but this is the one I like best. It feels the most natural.”
“It’s like an embrace.
You’ve really danced like this with other gentlemen?”
She tilted her head back and
laughed a little. “Yes, though not too many times. And—fortunately—never with
someone I wasn’t fond of. Are you ready?”
He adjusted his hand on her
back, fitting it snugly against the curve of her body. “I think so.”
“Step off with your right
foot, just like before, and use your hands to turn me. Think of this”—she
squeezed his left hand—“as the prow of a ship. You lead with that. This”—her other
hand slid down his arm —“is like a rudder. A little pressure one way or the
other on my back, and I’ll know which way to turn.”
He nodded. He could do this,
if he could just concentrate on the steps rather than the woman so unexpectedly
close to him. “Got it.”
She replaced her hand on his
shoulder. “We’re ready, Aunt.”

The music began and Benedict stood still for a few moments, trying to
get a feeling for the mechanics of the steps in this new position. Honoria’s
expression and body were relaxed as she waited in the half-circle of his arm,
as if she was perfectly comfortable being there.

Ready for some Author Q&A?

When did you start writing, and was there a specific event or person who influenced you to become an author?

I didn’t start writing seriously until a handful of years ago when on
medical leave from teaching. I was having severe asthma problems and
couldn’t walk the length of my (tiny) apartment without stopping to
rest, so I did a lot of reading. The reading eventually led to writing,
which I hadn’t done in several years at that point. I fell in love with
it all over again, and I’ve been writing ever since!

Are you currently working on a project, and if so, can you tell us anything about it?

I’m working on the second novella in the Maitland Maidens series called Back In My Arms Again. It features Lady Cecilia Maitland (the aunt of Honoria in Save the Last Dance for Me) and the James Fitzsimmons, who was Cecilia’s beau when they were young.

Four years ago, I had everything. All it took was the snap of his fingers and he ripped it out from under me.

Betrayed, by my own father.

His enemies want me dead and old allies want me back in their ranks to help take what’s owed. And while I’m trying to figure out what I want, there’s her. The one I watch from the shadows, afraid to bare myself to her—the real me.

Hard. Cold. Deadly.

She should fear me—Braiden Donohue—but I’m not the only one keeping secrets, and I must discover what she’s hiding.

Before it’s too late.

Redemption will be afforded, regrets will be atoned.

Welcome back to Chastity Falls.

I turned to look at her and our eyes connected, locking on each other’s. Her cheeks flushed with color and I liked the way it looked against her pale skin. Cara dropped her eyes for a second before they flickered up to my mouth.

“I was pissed when you tried to save me earlier. I don’t need saving, Braiden.” Her eyes didn’t move from my mouth as she spoke, and my heart slammed against my chest over and over.

Cara might not have needed saving … but I did.

I inched closer to her until our noses almost touched. “I’m not the good guy, Cara,” I warned her.

She should stay away from me. I was no good for her. People got hurt around me. I hurt people.

Cara closed the gap, pressing her lips to mine. For those first few seconds, I froze, unable to move. But like a small spark igniting a fire, I became lost in the feel of her mouth moving over mine, and somewhere deep inside me, a switch flipped. Hooking an arm around the curve of her waist, I pulled Cara flush to me, causing her to yelp into my mouth. Our tongues clashed, fighting for control. I could feel her anger and frustration with every lick and touch. She was taking her shit out on me, and I was more than happy to oblige. She tasted too fucking good to stop, like coffee and strawberry bubble gum. I dug my fingers into her waist, needing her to be closer as our lips explored and nipped and dueled for dominance.

“God, I knew we were the same. I knew you understood me,” Cara murmured into my mouth. But I heard her. I heard every damn word, and they hit me like a bucket of ice water.

“Stop, we have to stop.” I released my hold on her and pulled away, putting some space between us. The flush in her cheeks had spread down her neck and I wanted to taste her right where her jawline met the underside of her ear, but I couldn’t.

I wouldn’t.

This had gone far enough. Cara thought we were the same.

We were nothing alike.

She was just a girl seeking independence, wanting to break away from her father’s rule and live her own life.

And I was the guy fathers warned their daughters about.

‘God, I knew we were the same. I knew you understood me,’ Cara murmured into my mouth. But I heard her. I heard every damn word, and they hit me like a bucket of ice water. ‘Stop, we have to stop.’ I released my hold on her and pulled away, putting some space between us. The flush in her cheeks had spread down her neck and I wanted to taste her right where her jawline met the underside of her ear, but I couldn’t. I wouldn’t.

Redemption is for those who want something to live for. Regrets are for those who already missed their chance. There are several chances to change and multiple paths to traverse down, but the right one is out there just waiting for that one person. Cotton shares a world that allows her readers to deeply connect with her characters, allowing them to live through the life that she has created. The life of everyone in and around Chastity Falls. Redemption and Regrets is suspenseful, yet hopeful with a dash of steamy romance. Cotton’s compelling fourth installment allows readers to think about the actions and consequences of the life that they choose, rather than the life that they were born into.

Braiden gets picked up straight from prison by his sister and her bodyguard after four long awaited years. Life on the outside has changed drastically, including his family’s whereabouts. Now, in Astoria instead of Chastity Falls—there are some new players in the game that want Braiden to be their scapegoat. The Donahue name proceeds Braiden and Briony; they only have each other now. Forced to lay low in Forest Grove while he makes his decision, outside of Chastity Falls and Astoria, Braiden has a chance to think about what is best for himself—not what everyone else wants from him. Four years allowed for a lot of thinking, but thinking is not the only thing that takes him away from his troubles. With his track record with women…he is completely blindsided by the beautiful blonde with the disgusting bubblegum habit. Braiden meets Cara; she is snarky and independent. They really seem to get close very quickly, but neither of them had any control over their emotions around one another. Cara ignites a fire within Braiden…like he has never felt before. When push comes to shove, Braiden knows that no one has ever made his heart open to the possibility of escaping the life that he once proudly owned up to. But, he knows that any relationship can’t last…especially one with a woman who keeps her own secrets. Braiden and Cara might very well share a common secret, but will he find out what she is hiding before it is too late? Before someone finds where he is?

Cotton does a superb job with character development and originality. Her installments have all maintained a sense of suspense, danger and character dilemma that continue to flow steadily throughout each book. This fast paced novel is easy to read, entertaining and emotionally riveting. This author has penned another wonderful installment that will both enrapture and plunge the reader into the depths of the intriguing plot surrounding the new outlook of Braiden Donohue. If you are a reader of young adult and college, you might want to try this series out.
