Legendary warrior Lachlan MacLeod has never encountered anything or anyone he could not conquer. But when his younger brother confesses his love for Bridgette MacLean—the only woman Lachlan has ever wanted—Lachlan turns away from the beautiful Scottish lass, vowing to be no more than her friend. Yet his need for Bridgette enslaves him and may well prove to be the one thing he cannot defeat.
Fiercely independent Bridgette longs to be treated as an equal to the men. She always imagined great battles in her future, not great love. Then Lachlan saw her as no one ever had and captured her heart, awakening new cravings inside her without realizing it. But when Lachlan’s younger brother suffers a grave injury while saving her life, she feels unable to deny his plea for her heart. However, it is impossible to give what belongs to another…
Torn between their own desire and their loyalties, Bridgette and Lachlan must find the courage to grasp the passion awaiting them and face the pain their choice will cause. Yet even as they confront their future and love finally seems within their grasp, a fight for the Scottish throne divides the Highland clans and Bridgette becomes a pawn in a political game that threatens to tear her and Lachlan apart forever.
Slowly, she turned her head toward him and their gazes locked. “Because he risked his life for me and sustained a terrible injury in doing so. But Marion made me see how wrong that reason was. Even greedy. I was marrying him to ease the guilt his selfless act caused me. But I ken I dunnae love him, and I dunnae believe I would ever love him the way he deserves to be loved—with all of a woman’s heart. It’s nae anything he’s done.”
REVIEW: How would you feel if you had to marry someone against your will? What about someone who you feel that you owe your life to? Johnstone really delves into the emotional turmoil of a heart that is torn between duty and love. This tale is of a woman who has fallen in love with a man, but has been claimed by another—one who has saved her life. Wicked Highland Wishes holds depth, historical adventure, emotional prevalence and timeless romance. Johnstone provides a riveting and fascinating story that will captivate readers who enjoy this genre.
Bridgette McLean is a fascinating, independent woman who longs to do things like the men. Her biggest desire is to go on a hunt with her brother and his men. Upon denial, she decides to teach her brother that she can take down the wild boar like any other man. When she stumbles upon the enemy, Lachlan MacLeod comes to her rescue…the man that Bridgette can’t get out of her head and heart after one kiss. Throughout the coming months, Lachlan’s brother makes his claim on Bridgette. Lachlan and Graham have been on odds since youth, but this final claim may break Lachlan for good. He feels an undeniable pull towards Bridgette, but an equally vast emotional determination to support his brother out of protection and honor. What is to be done when it becomes inevitable that they can’t stay away from one another, even though they have been pledged to others?
Johnstone knows her characters well, to the point where this world is difficult to escape from. It is clear that she has a profound knowledge of history and a lot of research went into her story. This author does a superb job with character development and originality. The pace is very fluid and quick, but not so quick as to hinder understanding or perception. As this story progresses, it becomes more of a struggle for Lachlan and Bridgette, almost to the brink of eternal suffering. If you are a reader of historical romance, this may be an exciting read for you…but please know that this is the second installment. It can be read as a standalone, but does flow more consistently after the first installment has been read.
