Book Blast: Stolen by the Laird by Eliza Knight

About the Book:

She was supposed to be his prize… But not all rewards are sweet…

Laird Brody Keith, Marischal of Scotland, has been asked by his future king to travel with William Wallace to Dunnottar Castle, where they will seize the castle back from the English. If he completes his mission, the castle, the land and all it holds, will be his. Brody is more than eager to sink his blade into the hearts of his enemies after the brutal murder of his sister and father. But what he doesn’t count on is finding an English lass in need of his protection…

Lady Guinevere has led a less than pleasant life in Scotland over the past year, and now she can either run for her life, or accept the proposal of a man who should be her enemy. Survival bids her to acquiesce, but that doesn’t mean she has to play nice. Except, she’s coming to adore the people whom she’s always been told she should hate, and respect the man who risked his life for her.

Joined for a mutual purpose, Brody and Guinevere seem doomed from the start, but as time passes, and their true enemies draw closer, they’ll form an alliance that not even the devil himself can break.

Excerpt:

Brody pushed the door open the remainder of the way and came face to face with four Englishwomen. They huddled by the window, dressed in Sassenach gowns, hair once styled as though they were attending a great feast, jewels at their necks, and tears adorning each face except for one.

“Och, but I’ve died and gone to Hell,” he muttered.

Everyone knew Englishwomen were as shrewish as… well as, an Englishwoman, and as cold as dead fish.

All four stared at him, wide-eyed, mouths hung agape.

Much like fish, he thought.

They were pretty enough, especially the one with the long flowing blonde locks. Though it looked as though her locks had seen better days, perhaps not to have been torn from whatever fancy knot they’d been in.

“Who are ye?” he asked in not too kind a tone. He didn’t want any shrewish behavior, simply facts.

The blonde stepped forward, squared her shoulders and looked him straight in the eye with her piercing blue—nay more green than blue—eyes. She was the only one who didn’t cry. As though she’d been expecting him. The lass was beautiful, even if she was a harpy. Her bone structure was delicate, but her eyes sharp, and the way she frowned, well, he guessed her tongue to be just as barbed. The gown accentuated the curve of her hips and the swell of marginal breasts—he refused to call them the perfect size, for she was English, and he denied finding anything about her to be flawless.

“Who are you?” she retorted.

Och, a fiery little fish. “I asked ye first.”

“Well”—her gaze roved from the top of his head down to his boot tips and he felt more than a little assessed—“I think it is plain to see I outrank you, savage, so you must answer me first.”

At her bold words the ladies in her presence all paled, one covered her mouth, another pinched her own arms and the third nodded approval.

Brody chuckled, taking a menacing step forward. “Then I suppose we have found ourselves at an impasse, fishy, for I do believe I outrank ye.”

“Fishy? Ye insult me.” She shook her head and regarded him with something akin to disgust. “Impossible.”

Her revulsion almost had him checking himself. How odd, and why should he even wonder at her manners? She was English after all. Every woman he’d ever met up to this point had fallen at his feet. Brody was known for his charismatic tongue, his lovemaking abilities. Well, this fish wouldn’t know those things. And from the looks of her, she’d be too uptight to enjoy the pleasures he could have given her, if he wanted to, which he wouldn’t.

Brody puffed his chest and took several steps forward. “I assure ye, madam, given your current situation, anything is possible.”

Two of her ladies fainted dead away and the third stepped in front of the blonde, only to be shoved behind, a sharp word from the Grande Fishy’s mouth.

Then she turned back to him, pursing her lips as though she were contemplating a truce.

Before she could speak, he cut her off. “I dinna make deals, lass. If ye dinna believe me, then take a look out your window at the kirk yonder.”

“So you intend to kill us then?” Despite the stubborn set to her jaw and shoulders, her lower lip quivered.

Och, but why did that slight tremble have to tug at his heart? “We shall see what comes to pass.”

SYNOPSIS:

Constable Will Danbury has infiltrated a school to investigate an alleged crime. What he finds is a deeper, darker mystery—and a potent attraction to the alluring headmistress, Jacqueline Trouvère. As headmistress of a school devoted to saving the innocent daughters of London’s soiled doves, Jacqueline’s life is complicated. Will tempts her in ways she never thought to experience, but she believes no respectable gentleman could love a former courtesan.

Despite their best efforts to fight it, a romance blossoms. When danger jeopardizes the school, however, his deceptions and her omissions come to light, threatening to destroy their love. They must look beyond the past to save both their future together and the lives of those they’ve sworn to protect.

EXCERPT – ONCE A COURTESAN by Liana LeFey

Will barely stopped himself from exclaiming in shock at the sight of the pale, puckered scar circling Trouvère’s wrist. He looked away before she could catch him staring at it. Now he knew why instead of the tight elbow-length sleeves currently in fashion, hers went all the way to her wrists before ending in a froth of lace.

My God… Had she done it to herself? He risked another glance. No. It wasn’t the sort of mark left by a blade; it was the sort of scarring left by rope rubbing and cutting into flesh. Horror warred with curiosity. How had she come by such a terrible wound? Did she have a matching one on the other wrist? He’d seen such marks before in his line of work, and they usually came in pairs. Those who bore them had almost always been held prisoner at some point and struggled against their bonds. From the layered look of the scar, she’d done so for an extended period of time.

Thoughts tumbled over one another in a melee of suspicion, accusation, and speculation. She was French. Had she fled incarceration in France and settled in England to escape justice? Was Trouvère really her name? What was a woman with scars like that doing running a school?

She has suffered. The thought evoked a queer sensation of heaviness inside him, as if a weight had settled on his chest. Whatever the origin of that scar, she’d endured great pain in the making of it.

Who put it there? He longed to ask, but the way she snatched her hands back and drew them down out of sight behind her desk made him suspect she wouldn’t want to discuss it. One after another, questions popped up in his mind like mushrooms after arain.

Who is she, really?

 Q&A with the author:

Describe yourself in 50 words or less.
I’ve been writing since I was in middle school, and still love it best. My friends tell me I talk about my characters and stories as though they were real – because to me they are! I’m an organic gal, animal lover, nature lover, and passionate about my faith and family.
What do you love most in the world?
My family.
What do you fear most?
Dishonest people
What is your largest unfulfilled dream, and what are you doing to reach it?
I want to hit six figures this year with my writing for a variety of reasons: more time with my husband, the opportunity to give more, and eventually I want to open a refuge for homeless
and abused dogs. I’m writing and publishing in this pen and two others to reach this goal in 2017!
What is the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Honestly? Watch my dad die. He had lung cancer and my mom, sisters and I were all around him when he took his final breath on this earth. It was incredibly difficult, and the memory still is; I’m grateful he is no longer suffering.
Now that we’ve gotten to know each other, tell me a story. It can be long or short. From your childhood or last week. Funny, sad, or somewhere in between. Just make sure it’s yours.
What’s your story?

I had just graduated from high school and my parents and sisters were away for the night. My dad was an assistant pastor in our church, and we lived across the street from the parsonage and main church, in “parsonage 2”. After returning home from work I turned the television on to watch the news when the phone rang. It was a friend calling to let me know that “Bob” (a man in our town who was not well mentally, and that is not his real name) had told several people on the street that he was going to kill six people that night. No sooner had we hung up the phone there was a knock at the door. I walked over and opened it, assuming it was a friend or someone from the church— but instead BOB was standing at the door. My heart jumped into my throat and I froze. My immediate thought was, “This is it, I’m one of the six.” But when he opened his mouth he simply asked to speak to my dad, and of course, I didn’t want to tell him he was away for the night, so I told Bob he wasn’t home. He asked when he would be and I told him I didn’t know exactly when he would be back. I closed the door, locked it, and raced to the phone to call our pastor. They invited me to their house to spend the night, and called the police, who explained that they were aware of the situation but unless he threatened a specific person, there was nothing they could do. (Which made absolutely no sense to me, but that’s the way it was.)  The next day my parents came home,
and to my knowledge, he didn’t kill anyone— at least not that night.

Playing with fire can get you burned … or killed.

Chase Effridge, the handsome young playboy/college professor, is dead. A devoted and faithful husband he was not. Professor Effridge led a secret life where mistresses and enemies were no strangers to him. When his secrets begin to surface, his seemingly perfect life takes a turn for the worst. One mistress with a baby, and another whose boyfriend found out about their affair, are the equivalent of adding fuel to the fire.

Effridge’s estranged wife, Carlotta DuPree, tops the suspect list, but swears she’s innocent. Her cold demeanor and ill-wishes toward her husband do nothing to help her story. She claims to have an alibi, but can it be verified?

The list of suspects keeps growing as the interrogation process proceeds. Each conversation does little to unravel the complexity of Chase’s life, and provides little clarity as to who can be eliminated and who can’t. Instead, the discussions tend to reveal a new person of interest, and shroud those already on the list with more suspicion. Everyone seems to have a motive.

Will this crime ever be solved?
