Eve the First:

A Fairy Tale Revision

by Teresa Edmond-Sargeant

Genre: Fantasy, Fairy Tale Retelling

eve-about-the-book

A retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Wicked Prince,” “Eve the First” introduces a princess unlike any other in popular fairy tales: ruthless, power-hungry and ambitious enough to conquer Heaven. After successfully monopolizing the known world, Eve lays her eyes on taking down God so she can reign supreme over Heaven and Earth.

eve-excerpt

She was called Eve the First.

And once upon a time, that name, and its infamy, petrified the hearts and minds of anyone familiar with her conquests, capabilities, and cunning tenacity fueled by her volatility.

Eve’s innocent beauty belied her passion to conquer the world. Her doe-like eyes concealed the twinkle that reflected her megalomaniacal thirst for power. With her youthfully plump, pink lips, Eve barked demands at her subjects and soldiers, threatening to execute them if they failed to carry out her commands. She wore her lustrous locks in braids and pinned up into exquisite loops with hair ornaments crafted from the bones of her enemies and decorated with precious jewels like pearls, diamonds, and sapphires.

In Eve’s kingdom of Regnum, the populace sought for worldly knowledge, wealth, and prestige. Above all, the people pursued the supreme form of existence: immortality. To these ends, they excelled in architecture, arts, music, literature, alchemy and science. With the practices of Pagan worship, drunken orgies, and human sacrificing, they prided themselves on being their absolute best in knowledge and wealth, while their crude and barbaric natures situated them at the bottom of human existence.

Eve ruled the land of Regnum with the utmost passion of all kinds: love, fear, cruelty, and intensity, but mostly the last three. Every day she studied maps of foreign kingdoms, plotted her next conquest, and trained her soldiers until their feet bled and their sanity broke. Wherever she went, her subjects genuflected and lowered their heads, averting eye contact. If Eve caught anyone sneaking furtive glances at her, she screamed the dreaded words, “Away with him and off with his head!”

The next time that person was seen, his headless body was at the bottom of a ravine near Eve’s castle.

As she brandished her sword and ambition, Eve led her army all over the world, from the nearest to the most remote lands. She left behind trails of bloodshed, death, and tears. With every swing of her sword—a stab here, a beheading there—Eve radiated joy as blood splattered all over her armor and corpses piled up. Villagers said their bountiful fields, once ripe with harvest, were cultivated with the blood of the dead. Whole carcasses and body parts littered the meadows, turning them into rolling graveyards, as though the dead had been dug up.

“I have unyielding determination that cannot be matched,” Eve once said. “If that makes me an evil woman, so be it.”

Once Eve conquered a village, she marched into its public square and staked her coat of arms into the soil. Her soldiers kept the crowd back while the crowd admired Eve’s glorious beauty sullied with dirt and blood. Clutching the flagpole, Eve placed her right hand over her heart.

“Today’s victory is in memory of my dear mother, the late Queen Catherine the Third,” Eve said to her new subjects. “She would have been proud to know that I will bestow upon all of you a new day, a new life, and a new era. I acknowledge that from this day forward, this is the age we start to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and heal the sick. I have ushered in a Golden Era of Peace where the sun will always rise in the east, trees shall forever bear fruit, and harvest season shall forever be abundant. This is the time when we unite as one to remake this land so it will transcend our utmost expectations and ideal selves.”

Eve then signaled her soldiers to present her newly conquered subjects with baskets of bread and meat and vessels of cider.

“Today, what I have done was quite a sacrifice, but it was all done for you my beloved people,” Eve continued. “I will give you whatever you yearn for—food, shelter, clothes—and promise to alleviate you of the agonies you long suffered at the hands of your demon of a king. That will happen if — and only if — you crown me your ruler and allow me to erect my statues everywhere in your village.”

Then her soldiers demanded that the peasants form lines in front of them. Cries of “Long live Eve” rang throughout the land as soldiers passed out equal rations of food and drink to the peasants.

FIVE STAR REVIEW

Alexander Broderick stood at the top of the curving stairwell in the center of his Kensington residence, surveying his domain. The party had started at eight sharp, with more guests arriving every few minutes. His Halloween parties were an age old tradition, even if their grandeur and scale had evolved significantly since the early days. A hundred years ago, he’d been content inviting a few friends and acquaintances, all of them vampire like he was. Now, every year, the event had grown bigger and better, featuring new faces from all walks of life.

Being invited to a grand ball where you would be able to dress up in a beautiful gown, have men fall over you, and get to leave at the end of the night with no one knowing who you are…because of the Halloween mask that you are wearing—some would say sounds like a dream! Cat is dragged into the ball by her best friend Shelly, but she doesn’t know that this ball can be life-altering. Moone has a fascinating streak with the supernatural in this somewhat shortened story. This author captivates her readers with the enticing and alluring Alexander and his mysterious demeanor. What exactly is a blood bride though?

Upon entering the doors to the great house, Shelly automatically gets swept up by the presence of so many people. Cat becomes completely mesmerized by the artwork framing the walls, then runs into Alexander. This man is the person responsible for the party—Cat realizes that she is utterly attracted to this mysterious man…but at the same time—she senses danger from him. After a short tour ending in his bedroom, Cat knows that something feels wrong. This man, Alexander, is polite, sensual, affectionate, and completely intoxicating…then it dawns on her! Once he takes off his mask, his face is the exact same face that she saw in the painting that must have dated back a century ago. No human could possibly live that long and still look so young. Stumbling over her feet and fleeing away from the house, she can’t stop thinking about this man and what he could do to her. He fills her dreams and her every waking moment until the day comes when she runs into him again. Alexander only knows one thing. Cat is a blood bride—but, for the life of him…he has never wanted anyone more than he wants her. Was it fate? What will the Council do when they find out that Alexander wants to keep her safe from them?

Moone has superb character development in this short story. The originality is fantastic as well as the supernatural element! Since the format was an audiobook, the narrator was superb! The setting and accent from Edwards was exciting! He knew when to build the reader up to the next scene and when to crescendo back down. There was also a light humor within the content as well. If you are a reader of paranormal romance, this may be your cup of tea. This is the first installment in the Vampires of London Series; therefore, readers can jump right in.

AUDIO EXCERPT

TEXT EXCERPT

Cat turned back one last time and caught a glimpse of their cab leaving. There was nowhere else to run.

Shelly took her by the arm and almost dragged her inside.

They were both speechless. They both stood there, looking up at the most beautiful carved wooden staircase Cat had ever seen. In the center of the ceiling up above was a giant crystal chandelier, its light refracting and dancing around on the walls and parquet floor below.

A waiter arrived seconds later, offering them a glass of champagne.

Shelly emptied her glass immediately, but Cat wasn’t much of a drinker. She sipped it slowly, and tried to take in as much as she could of the lush interior. This mansion didn’t belong to some footballer, or other nouveau-riche celebrity. The place screamed old money.

As luxurious as it looked, it was tasteful.

Within minutes of their arrival, Shelly couldn’t resist the pull of the festivities, and Cat found herself alone. She didn’t mind. The champagne was lovely, refreshing with just a hint of citrus, and if Cat was left completely to her own devices, the decor alone would keep her entertained all evening.

Cat gazed at the staircase again. What wonders awaited up there? If she wasn’t polite to a fault, she would have been tempted to check it out. She wouldn’t, though. Not unless he was invited to.

Her eyes settled on a painting of a man on horseback that hung on the left hand wall closer to ground level. She squinted to get a better look; it seemed old, probably expensive just like everything else in here. But that wasn’t what had attracted her gaze. The hunting scene looked just like the standard fare you found in country houses and palaces around the country, except the man was dressed completely in black.

She felt a chill pass down her spine as she focused on his face. His dark eyes gave the impression of being alive as he seemed to stare down at her. How handsome he was. He would have had a striking presence back in the day with his sharp jawline, impossibly flawless skin, and dark medium length hair.

If she found nothing else of interest here—which was unlikely—this one painting could captivate her for hours. That was how lifelike it looked.

Cat had to admit Shelly had been right: she’d never been to a place or a party quite like this one before.

Can Damien and Raelyn’s love bear the inevitable storm? Or will heartbreak and devastation shatter their dreams of forever?

BOOK LINKS: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo | Apple

Whether we carried them on our naked flesh or in the depths of our hearts, I believed we all had scars in one way or another. Some were deep, jagged, and tender to the touch while others faded until they were faint and forgotten. It was a choice—whether one let a wound hold them back or one made themselves stronger. It was our faith and those we loved that empowered us to persevere, for acceptance and love were meant to last…forever.

REVIEW: For some, love does not exist. For some, love is the unattainable dream. For others, there is always someone out there who makes their life brighter. Love has several different meanings, but Rae does a really great job of summing up the many different emotions that come with that feeling of love. From doubt to desperation, sadness to overjoyed and hatred to hunger. This third installment is a trying novel, one that will challenge everything that readers have endured throughout the story. Be prepared because the road to forever for Damien and Raelyn is not all silver roses and white Lilies or you know, rainbows and butterflies.

After Raelyn’s battle with the second appearance of her Glioma tumor, Damien has given her a new strength—a new reason to want to live. She has already admitted that falling head over hills for this mysteriously dark and handsome man was not in the game plan at all, but what she doesn’t understand is why he won’t open up to her. She has shared everything with him, secrets about her past…her fight to survive the first go around with cancer and her fears. Before she can move forward and have any happily ever after with Damien, she knows that she must unravel the secrets that he hides—especially when his worthless mother and step-brother come back to throw everything in his face or worse—threaten to go public. With Raelyn still recovering from her surgery and the stress from her new business partnership, regaining a lost friendship and Damien withholding himself from her, will Raelyn snap and walk out of his life forever…or will he be her forever?

Rae has an invigorating story that is creative and well written. The pace is nice and quick, which makes reading this installment very easy. The author does a wonderful job with character development and credibility. This installment is a bit steamier than the last two which was a bit redundant. It is strongly recommended that both the first and second installment be read before diving into this one, due to the content and constant back-story references of the characters and previous scenes that unfolded beforehand. If you are a reader of romance and women’s fiction, this may be perfect for you.

Dance With Destiny holds a special place in my heart since I took a branch off the family tree when writing the book.

When I became a teenager, my dad told me the dirty little secret about his grandmother. She was half-Indian, and until the day she died, she had the strong, chiseled features that bespoke of her heritage, and long coal black hair that fell to her knees. He had promised my mother to never speak of her until we kids were old enough to handle the stain on the family.

Rather than being appalled by this knowledge, I was thrilled to consider myself 1/16th Indian. It didn’t even matter which tribe we belonged to. Times were changing, and being a part of the culture that was America before the Europeans came to our shores was exciting. I began to wear feathers in my hair, and to this day I wear moccasins around the house.

With the advent of Ancestry.com and the Latter Day Saints’ genealogy files being computerized, I thought it would be a piece of cake to figure out my Indian heritage. My great-grandmother’s maiden name was Missouria Myers. How hard could it be to find her? But, 40,000 ancestors later and I still could find no connection to the Indian part of me.

I contacted the Myers branch of the family, some of them unknown to me until then, and they graciously shared what information they had, along with Christmas cards each year. They had heard the rumor about the Indian ancestor, too, and how my great-grandmother and her siblings had been harassed in school because of their tainted blood line, but could never figure out how an Indian came into the family.

When it became possible, I underwent the Ancestry.com DNA test. Imagine my disappointment when the DNA test disproved a blood connection!  But since multiple branches of the family had been told the same story for years, there had to be a grain of truth in it.

Susannah Myers was my great-great grandmother, and Missouria Belle was my great-grandmother. William Myers did indeed go off to fight the Civil War, leaving Susannah alone on a mountaintop in southern Ohio with her children. This is my version of what may have happened. I hope you enjoy it.

Snippet:
Courtney stopped abruptly as the scatterings of a cave-in came into view. “Oh no,” she whispered, one hand to her mouth. Moving slowly, she noticed a body slumped in the hallway. “Please don’t be dead,” she said over and over again as she moved closer. She couldn’t help but wonder which of her friends lay there, and what had happened to the other.

The closer she came, the more detail came to light. She recognized Tyler Durand as he lay on his side. His light-colored hair lay limp against his head. His skin was unnaturally pale. At least she didn’t think he was dead. It took a lot to kill a dragon. But just beyond him, a little more out of the way, lay Anwen Porter. And she wasn’t moving.

lh-excerpt

Trent knelt down where Anna could throw her arms around his neck. She pulled against him tight and started crying again. Tears rolled down his face as he whispered, “I love you more than you can understand. I’m sorry.”

Her cries downed out his soft words.

After a minute, Trent summoned all of his strength to break free of her hold. Standing, he shared a look with Madison. She wrapped him in a loving, warm hug.

This time she did the whispering, “Remember what I told you. Make them pay.”

He pulled away, nodding as he placed his hand on Anna’s sobbing head.

I’ll see you both again someday. I promise.” The words bound him to a promise he wasn’t sure he could keep.

Lady Bethany would rather die a spinster than submit to marriage—and thus reveal the horrible secret she has harbored for more than a year.
Lord Locke is far too immersed in his service to the Crown for romance, but Lady Bethany is in dire circumstances.
Indebted to Bethany’s late father and his close friend, the earl offers a perfect solution for both of them: a marriage in name only.
Perfect, if only they weren’t so irresistibly drawn to each other—and if Bethany hadn’t found herself falling in love with a man even more mysterious than his reputation. Perfect, until she unwittingly learns he’s protecting her from a threat to her life.
To Mark, Bethany is just another assignment, a woman he’s convinced is hiding something. His offer of marriage was meant only to make it easier to safeguard her.
But when the simple threat turns to attempted murder and treason, Mark realizes that Bethany has stolen his heart and he can do nothing less than throw himself into a race against time to save her, whatever the price.

Snippet:

“Oh no! My skirt. It’s caught between the stirrup leather and the saddle and it’s tearing.”
“I’ll hold you up,” Locke said, raising her enough to tug it free.
She weighed almost nothing, but he was more than overwhelmed by the sweet lemony smell of her. When he at last lowered her to
the ground, he found himself unable to let go, at least until she turned to face him.
Emerald eyes opened wide, Lady Bethany’s cheeks flushed prettily. Was that wonderment on her features? He didn’t see the slightest hint of fear in her. He felt her gaze admire him, drifting from his brows to his nose and arriving at last at his mouth. Her hands, so small and delicate against the firm muscles of his chest, gave no hint of the resistance she’d shown last night.
She stood perfectly still, obviously aware that his breath had faltered. Did she realize what she did to him? Had she any idea how much he wanted to kiss her? And then he saw it, the glimmer of desire in her eyes that battered at his resolve. He raised a hand to brush a stray hair from her cheek and her eyelids fluttered shut, a tremble sweeping over her. His resistance melted and he traced her jaw to her chin and lifted it, leaning towards the soft pillow of her lips, wanting more than anything to taste their sweetness.

Excerpt:

“Wake up.” Stephanie felt a gentle touch on her shoulder, so soft she thought she imagined it. She could feel a small protest bubble from her chest. “Wake up! He’s coming.” This time she could feel someone grasp her shoulders and give a shake. Stephanie jolted from sleep, pushing herself up to a sitting position.  She pushed her back against the wall, brought her knees up to her chest, and wrapped her arms tightly around them. She couldn’t shake the disturbing dream. It had felt so real. The woman’s voice still floated around in her thoughts as she searched for her. She could still feel her hands on her shoulders. She reached up and placed her hands over the lingering sensation and sought comfort in the fact for the first moment since she arrived she didn’t feel so alone in this hell.
The sound of the lock sliding in the door made Stephanie’s heart race, she could feel her pulse in her throat as she lay down and pretended to be asleep. She concentrated on slowing her breath to deep, even intervals, trying to block out the sound of his footsteps across the floor.
His wedding band clinked against the bars but he remained quiet, watching her. “I know you’re awake, Rose,” he said after a stretch of time. The drugs in her system were wreaking havoc on her thoughts. She wasn’t sure how long had passed or if she had fallen asleep and this was another dream. She desperately wanted it to be a dream. She didn’t want to look at his face anymore and wonder if today would be the day he decided to kill her.
Stephanie opened her eyes and looked at him. He was dressed in a suit with his tie loosened and hanging haphazardly around his neck, his haunting eyes never leaving her. His clothes looked expensive and she couldn’t’ help but wonder who he was when he left here. She wondered what woman would be married to a man like him and if she feared him like Stephanie did.
“There you are.” He smiled at her, an expression that seemed unnatural for his face. “You need to eat, Rose.” He pointed to a tray of food she hadn’t touched. The wonderful smells had called to her but she couldn’t take any more drugs. She didn’t know what was real or not anymore.
“No more drugs…they make me feel so sick,” Stephanie whispered. She could feel the physical toll weighing heavily on her exhausted body.
“As long as you behave I don’t need to drug you.” He unlocked the cell door and then picked up the tray. Walking inside, he approached her bed and sat down, placing the tray on the edge. “Do you promise to behave?”
Stephanie nodded her head and tried not to tremble. She didn’t want to show fear but it poured out of her regardless.
He placed a hand on her arm and then ran it over the length of her body. “Good girl,” he said. “Good girl.” Stephanie squeezed her eyes shut and held her breath until she felt the weight of his body leave the bed and the sound of the cell door closing behind him.
