BREAKING DOWN SYDNEY by Brittney Coon
A Sydney West Novel, Book 2
Cover Designer: TOJ Publishing Services
–– SYNOPSIS ––

Sydney West’s new relationship might
have survived Malibu, but her transformation from party girl to girlfriend
isn’t complete…
Sydney is back in Arizona, and with the fall semester at her doorstep,
doubts about her so-called summer love start to plague her. A good girl can
only stay good for so long. Jason King changed her and made her wonder if love
was real. But now, far from his charm, and with the party scene on campus in
full swing, the magic is fading…

Jason isn’t willing to let distance drive
a wedge between them…
A surprise reunion and a romantic cabin getaway is enough to reignite their
summertime spark, but Sydney isn’t convinced this whole monogamous,
meeting-your-parents thing Jason wants is possible. No boy has ever met her
mother. Then, when a sudden family tragedy strikes, it sends her spiraling into
her old habits of booze and boys.

Sydney can only hide from her past
for so long…
In the fog of drowning her sorrows, Sydney realizes her former party
lifestyle won’t make her happy. Her one-night stands ended with Jason. As much
as she wants to believe in that far-fetched fairytale ending, she’s afraid if
Jason finds out about all her summer boys, he will abandon her just like her
father did.
Jason refuses to settle for the superficial shell Sydney keeps between them,
though, and is determined to…

Break
Down Sydney once and for all.

While on the mend, Graeme meets Kate Corrigan, a woman who enkindles his lust, his desire to possess, his need to protect. It is Kate who gives him a reason to be a better person than he was before.

Kate is an investigative journalist who has been following a local councillor she believes is involved in human trafficking. Thrown together, their attraction for each other becomes a passionate conflagration that will not leave them unscathed. But not all is cut and dried. Graeme finds out that the person Kate is after is the very person he has been searching for, for centuries. A great sacrifice is made that can break them apart. Midnight's Atonement Teaser #1
EXCERPT
Kate returned to the car to take the yellow ticket out from underneath her wiper. As soon as she took the penalty notice out, the gate to the building’s basement parking lifted. She made her way quickly out of the driveway, intent on reaching the bus stop but felt someone tapping her from behind. She whirled around defensively and almost in panic when the stranger standing in front of her took her breath away. Kate could see that he was a head taller than she was because she had to take a step back to look at him without having the rain fall into her eyes.
The raindrops that pelted him started to soak his black t-shirt. He looked powerful, his chest broad and muscular that tapered to rock hard abs that sent her pulse reeling and her mouth-watering, an incredible specimen of magnetism. His had his legs braced apart emphasizing the muscled limbs he had underneath his denims and the slimness of his hips. His jeans rode low on his waist and Kate’s mouth became dry at the sight of the flat V that led to what was hidden. Kate looked up at his hooded grey green eyes, the hollowness around it emphasizing the possibility that he was just getting over some illness. Those same eyes assessed her and she felt liquid excitement pool between her thighs at seeing the sexual interest smouldering in them. Her heart fluttered more and her belly clenched with a longing she nearly couldn’t hold back. It was primal, an ache that somehow Kate believed this stranger in front of her could satisfy. That thought caused her face to flush and redden even more when his perfectly formed mouth lifted to one side in a sexy grin. Did she say it out loud? Could he perhaps read her mind?
“Are you okay?”
Kate watched his mouth move unable to hear what he was saying under the sound of the rain and the thundering in her ears. Her eyes widened when he reached out to her as she felt the heat of his hand like a bolt of electricity that enticed the pool of arousal to increase between her thighs.
“Are you okay?” he said louder.
“My car’s been clamped.” She said sputtering to get the rain water out of her mouth. “I’m soaked and I have to get home. Does it look like I’m okay?” Kate turned away remorse flooding her. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to snap at you. But I’m cold and I need to go.”
“Why don’t you come inside?” He hollered over the rain. The deluge abated one moment then increased the next and Kate felt like a drowned icicle.
“Why would I want to do that?” Kate huffed as she frowned.
“Well, first to get out of the rain. Wait until it subsides before you catch a cold,” the stranger remarked. “If you could wait, I can take you home.”
“How do you know I was going home?” Kate remained stubborn despite her teeth chattering. Her wet mop of hair only aggravated the cold seeping into her head. Her mascara ran like black waterfalls down her face, and the frozen tendrils of rainwater trailed agonizingly in rivulets down her back.
His lips thinned even as his eyes showed his surprise.
“You said so. Look, are we going to continue this discussion in the rain or are you going to join me inside?” he asked.
Kate backed away. Far be it for her to deny the deadly attraction this man had, there was no way she was going with him.
“If you didn’t talk to me, I would have been able to get the bus and not get soaked as I am now,” she retorted. She was freezing and Mr Drop Dead Fantasy Guy looked as though he was just soaked by a summer squall, not a winter’s deluge.
He looked away in exasperation before returning to pin her with his scowl. “Have it your way then.”
He turned on his heel and went through the half rolled up gate.
Kate couldn’t stop fuming.
“What a prick,” she grumbled before crossing the street to wait for the bus.
****
Graeme swore inside the lift all the way to the Faesten’s penthouse. He was still swearing when the lift’s doors opened.
“Who’s got under your skin?” Finn Qualtrough asked his brow arched enquiringly, as he crossed the marble lobby.
“Sorry, Finn. Didn’t realize you and Eirene were up.” Graeme replied by way of greeting raking both his hands through his wet hair.
“We do have showers you know.” Finn quipped as he approached his friend. “We’ve come a long way from bathing in the loch or the rain.”
Graeme shook his head as he grimaced in good humour. “Don’t I know it. I’ll clean this mess up.”
Finn waved his hand in dismissal. “Leave it. Go and get a proper shower.”
“Cheers.” Graeme said. He was about to bound up the staircase when Finn’s question halted him.
“Who’s got you riled up anyway?”
Graeme turned to his fellow Cynn Cruor after taking off his t-shirt. His face turned to a slight scowl when he saw Finn’s amused grin.
“Who says I’m riled up?”
Finn raised a thick brow as though saying, ‘You’re not fooling me’.
“Where’s Eirene?” Graeme asked in an attempt to deflect Finn’s line of questioning.
“Over here,” Eirene spoke as she came out of the kitchen. Then she giggled. “I see.”
Graeme rolled his eyes at them both. He pointed at the two of them alternatingly.
“That telepathic communication between mates can be irritating.”
Eirene laughed. “Oh Graeme, it can’t be that bad. She might not have been worth your time.”
“Who said it was a she? I never said anything.”
Eirene’s mouth twitched. “Uh huh.”
“Have you become psychic now?”
“I don’t need to be when you’ve left the CCTV feed on Camera Three up on the LED screen.” Eirene pointed her chin toward the nerve centre.
Graeme felt the heat creep up his neck and flush his face.
Busted.

SEXCERPT
Her hardening nipples poked through the beige lacy cups of her balconette bra. Graeme’s eyes seemed to burn brighter and Kate couldn’t stop herself from arching her back, offering her breasts for his taking. Sensual flames licked her skin everywhere Graeme’s hands touched, her body welcoming the contact. He moulded her waist up her ribcage to cup the underside of her breasts again before grazing the peaks through the lace cups with his thumbs. The rubbing of her nipples sent electricity down to her sex causing her to become wetter. Then his thumbs were replaced by his mouth and tongue. Kate was caught up in the dizzying pleasure of his mouth. She moaned when he spoke against her nipples, the vibrations rippling through her.
“My eyes turn gold when I desire someone.”
Kate braced one arm against the table while she held on to Graeme’s head with the other, the pleasure she felt becoming unbearable. She needed something more. She needed something inside her.
She wanted Graeme.
Her back arched and her breath sighed out of her when Graeme ripped her bra and feasted on her breasts.
“Ohh…” she moaned as her legs went around Graeme’s waist, pulling him closer with her thighs to rub herself against the thick stalk inside his denims. When Graeme let go of her tits and demanded that she submit to his kiss, she opened up to him. She allowed him to explore every crevice of her mouth as she gloried at his taste. She kissed him hungrily, sucking on his lips, nibbling and teasing his tongue, giving as he demanded and taking as much as she wanted.
“Graeme please….I need more. Please give me more.” She licked against his throat taking small nips and bites, grazing her teeth against his salty skin. God, she’d never felt this wild before! She purred at the feel of his taut skin against her palms, his flesh rippling and tensing everywhere she touched.
He captured her mouth in another torrid kiss that sent her pulse to a frenzy. She couldn’t get enough, the pain in the middle of her core becoming slightly uncomfortable. She nipped at his mouth and sucked on his tongue before letting her tongue swirl around it. She tasted traces of mint even as her nose was filled with his masculine scent.
Graeme let go of her mouth to graze his teeth against her jaw to reach the sensitive spot behind her ear.
“Tell me what you want Kate.”
Graeme gently squeezed her breasts before he rolled her nipples between his fingers. Kate cried out in pleasure.
“Tell me.”
“I don’t know,” she whimpered against his neck, feeling as though she was deliciously melting. She turned her head slightly, her mouth against his skin. Her tongue snaked out tasting his saltiness before she sucked the skin over his pulse. The need to suck some more became stronger and she sucked harder, she could taste something coppery against her tongue. Graeme growled.
“Ancients!” he pushed her away gently.
Kate looked at him in confusion and alarm. Then realization dawned.
“You don’t like me.” She whispered, her heart thundering in her throat. Desire didn’t cause it. Rejection did.
“Not like you?” Graeme asked her his breathing laboured. “Kate I’ve wanted you since the day I first saw you. You sucking on my neck almost made me come in my jeans.”
A deeper blush stole over her cheeks. “Oh.”
“Kate?”
“I want you inside me too,” she sighed before looking down. “But I’ve not done this in a very long time. I don’t know how else to ask.” She looked up. “Except to say that I need you.”
Graeme chuckled. “You’re doing pretty good so far.”
“Please don’t tease.”
Graeme gave her a hard kiss that sent her senses reeling towards sensual meltdown.
“I’m not teasing.” His eyes darkened, his lust apparent. “Lie down.”

“No! Andy…please!”
I was roughly shoved into the back of  a black car. The door slammed shut, the front door opened soon after and he got in. There was a click, as the car was locked. He threw the car into forward, and took off at an insane speed leaving everyone I knew and cared for behind.
I watched in terror as trees whizzed by, leaving the familiar surroundings behind as the road went from pavement to dirt and the buildings were replaced with large trees and fallen branches. I didn’t know where we were going, but I wanted to go home. The locks wouldn’t budge; the child safety lock prevented my escape the moment he had locked me in this god-forsaken car. I had lost my phone in the struggle, and I was stuck in here.
There were scratch marks and dark spots on the seat. It looked as though someone had tried to claw their way out and I couldn’t blame them. Every hair on my neck were standing on end with fear blazing through me. My throat was sore from the screaming, but all the drivers had ignored my pleas for help. They simply kept driving without another sideways glance in my direction.
“Where are you taking me?” I asked again, my voice hoarse from the screams and crying. It was answered the same way, with silence that slowly crept in and made me shudder.
“Shut up!’
“Where are we going?”
“Be a good girl and take orders. Now shut up!”
I wished more than anything to be back at home and under my bed, away from him. The road turned to gravel as we came upon a rundown house, its shudders were falling of the hinges, but what caught me was the windows were boarded up. To prevent escape, I felt a shiver travel up my spine as the car came to a slow stop.
He got out of the car and didn’t unlock the doors until he was at the door. That small click would have brought me relief at any point in the car ride other than now. I pushed against the other side of the car as he reached one long hand in and grabbed me by my ankle and roughly yank me out of the car on to the gravel. A scream ripped through my throat as the gravel cut into my skin and my head hit the side of the car.
“Get up!” he ordered. My head was spinning from everything that had happened, but when I didn’t move, he moved me.
His hand grabbed take a large chunk of my hair before he lifted me out of the car, ignoring my cries of pain. He roughly dragged me to the house, I couldn’t get my feet to walk and fell often.
The door was solid, he had to slam his body against the wooden blockade and force it open. There was a creak as it slowly opened from his blows, and he threw me inside onto the hardwood floor. There was no carpet, anywhere It would be possible to hear every step from anywhere in the home. The house was bare to the bones, the walls held no photos or phones, rooms remained empty of furniture unless it was bolted to the ground. A new wave of fear ripped through me in realization that he had done this before, he had taken precautions for it.

  3. I was born in a little town (it’s grown up a lot since then), and for a short time lived on a farm. My mom told me that I used to throw ripe tomatoes at the sheep.

Brady…
What the hell do I know about raising a baby? Nothing. Not a goddamn thing.
Yet here I am, the sole guardian of my niece. I’d be lost if it weren’t for Katherine, the beautiful girl who seems to have all the answers. Katherine, who’s slowly finding her way into my cynical heart.
I keep reminding myself that I can’t fall for someone when we don’t have a future. But telling myself this lie and believing it are two different things.
Katherine…
When Brady shows up on a Harley, looking like an avenging angel—six feet, three inches of chiseled muscle, eyes the color of wild sage, and sun-kissed skin emblazoned with tattoos—I’m not sure if I should fall at his feet or run like hell. Because if I tell him what happened the night his family died, he might hate me.
What I don’t count on are the nights we spend together trying to forget the heartache that brought us here. I promise him it won’t mean anything, that I won’t fall in love.
I shouldn’t make promises I can’t keep.

About the Book

Traumatized by war, friends gather for a reluctant reunion…

A historic house in Jotham, Texas harbors a malevolent force, and as her fear grows, widow Maggie Smith pleads with three lifelong friends to gather in her home. But will their presence combat the darkness…or feed it?

Minister Jake Williams fears Maggie has had a breakdown…

Feeling he has no choice, Jake locates the other intended guest, Bobby Weeks, who agrees to go with him but struggles with keeping his lycanthropic curse hidden.

Jonathan Steele, a wounded veteran battling PTSD, arrives with his disgruntled wife. After drinking too much at dinner, Jonathan insults the homeless Bobby, and Bobby is missing from the house the next morning.

The dark past of Maggie’s home awakens in the present…

Jake, whose faith is in doubt, confides in a local priest while he and Jonathan search for Bobby, and Ricky’s ghost makes another visit to Jonathan, causing him to become fixated on saving Maggie from the evil that surrounds her.

As the danger intensifies, trust is elusive, and betrayal is certain…

Maggie might be lost, Bobby confronts a terrible choice, and Jake and Jonathan fight to save them all—before they become more victims of the horror emerging beneath the deadly house in Jotham.

Author Interview

Characters often find themselves in situations they aren’t sure they can get themselves out of. When was the last time you found yourself in a situation that was hard to get out of and what did you do?

This would be known as the Kobayashi Maru among certain Trek nerds. Much like Kurt, I don’t believe in unsolvable situations. Even if it’s something drastic, like cheating (for the greater good, of course). In the real world, my life is quiet and simple. I don’t typically find myself in difficult situations, and if I do, it’s probably too personal to mention here. I guess one time, for sake of this interview I feel safe mentioning, I had almost missed a connecting flight in Dallas to Houston. I just ran…okay, jogged lightly…okay! I walked briskly to my connecting terminal. I was the last one to board, but I made it in time. Does that count?

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Oh! This is a hard one, cause…you know, I read comics and am a nerd. I think I’ve always wanted telekinesis. So many benefits with that power. I could be lazy and get things with my mind. I could pretend to be a Jedi. And if my power was strong enough, I could even fly, or at least levitate. And don’t even get my started on the bedroom, could you imagine all the crazy things that could happen!

If you were an animal in a zoo, what would you be?

Sloth. I’m slow and purposeful.

Do you dream? Do you have any recurring dreams/nightmares?

Sometimes I have strange dreams of some kind of apocalypse, in these scenarios I’ve seen zombies and vampires and random monsters. I’ve had dreams of falling before. And I’ve had dreams in which I am back in the Army and deployed somewhere, typically Iraq. Sometimes it’s something really strange and random, other times it’s me in the turret, as I was a gunner for the majority of my tours.

Do you have any scars? What are they from?

I’ve got some knife scars on my hand. Randomly. One of them is actually from my first job at Subway, back in the 90s. I was trying to open a large jar of mayo with a knife, the knife slipped and plunged into the space between my thumb and index finger. Ouch!

Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you to write?

Obviously, I lot of inspiration for me has come from Stephen King, as his focus tends to be centered on his characters, likewise, I to tend to focus on my characters as well. Lately, I’ve been reading a lot more of H.P. Lovecraft and Clive Barker. They both have amazing talent in creating these otherworldly places and moods. They take risks and allow their imaginations to flourish. I’m trying to be more like them in that regard.

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?

Names have no major significance to me. Sometimes I certain name will appear in my head for a particular character, and it feels right. I think in naming characters, it should be simple, but also the name must make sense for them. I doubt most fantasy writers name their Orc warrior characters Bill or Teddy, you know. If I’m feeling especially moved, sometimes I’ll use people I know, I’ll borrow their names or ask if they want to be written into the story. In my soon-to-be announced book 3 in the Subdue Series (coming this summer, wink wink), I had a morgue scene with tons of mutilated dead bodies in it. I wanted to give those dead bodies names, make them real people, so I held a “casting” on FB. I was taken back by how many people wanted to be dead…

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

Fatherhood/husband. Easy, right? I can list more, of course, but those two are my best accomplishments, I think. Sure, I could say enlisting in the U.S. Army and serving 6.5 years and 3 different tours in Iraq, earning combat badges and meritorious service and national service awards. I could say, attending night school and graduating with a BA in History. I could say, working my way from a lineman to an Operations Manager with my current company. I could also say, publishing four books, several shorts, and an anthology. I could say those things. But I’m more proud of my daughter and wife and how blessed I am because of them. In the end, family is what matters most.

Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you have any advice on how to deal with the bad?

When I first started and got my first negative review, I think it was for Reinheit before Booktrope picked it up. Someone didn’t care for the story and found a bunch of grammar/editing issues. Okay. I didn’t respond to him/her negatively, but I responded with a kind of “thank you for reading.” Nowadays, I don’t respond. But I do still read reviews. I’m not a “master storyteller,” not yet anyway. So, reviews help tremendously for folks like me, still learning the craft of storytelling, reviews, both positive and negative help me hon my talent. And it also helps knowing people are reading. Now…I will say there are certain types of reviewers out there we call in the biz, trolls. Trolls because they’re not really reading the material, they’re just harping so that either on Amazon or Goodreads, their review % is high or they can be categorized within certain brackets as “reviewers.” FOR WHATEVER REASON trolls review, or even if it is a genuine negative review, it is never a good idea to turn the tables and harp on them. It’s not going to end well for you and your time and energy is being focus where it shouldn’t be. I’ve seen budding authors whine and complain about negative reviews as if the world was going to end. Okay. Someone didn’t like your story, it will be okay. The sun will come up tomorrow. If you jump on social media and start bitching, that’s what people are going to think of you. Maybe, while reviews are important, we’ve put too much stock in focusing on them. You know? Call me crazy, but maybe writers ought to be focusing on, you know, writing.

What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

Some advice huh? First off, never give up. I know that sounds cheesy, like a standard line everyone says, but it’s true. It breaks my heart when I see someone truly excited about their work, whatever it may be, and then through the process of getting the work out there, they become bummed out and end up giving up on the whole thing altogether. Publishing is a tedious business that puts a lot of strain and stress on the author, more so if they’re going it alone. Like most things in life, or as those spiritualist meta-thinkers say, no one is an island. We need our communities. The same could be said about writing. Even if you really like to self-pub, that’s okay too, but you need a base. You need to make connections. Build a circle of fellow authors and cross-promote each other. You can share advice or just talk things though. It helps, trust me.

Again, cross-promote. Do not rely entirely on Facebook to sell books. If you do, you will be greatly disappointed. Facebook is filled with family and friends who you can be guilted into buying a few copies, but what your aim ought to be is building your brand and then building an, as we call in the biz, fan-base. How do you do this? To be honest, I’m no expert. I can say what has worked for me thus far. Making connections. Attending Facebook events, and when you attend those events, please do not post after post links on how to buy your book…ugh! Boring! Try this trifecta during your next event: trivia, giveaways, and genre questions, such as: “What’s your favorite scary movie? People who attend these events love to talk about the genre, not just to read about the book you desperately want them to buy. Keeping a blog and/or author site is also important. The trap, however, is when all you do is promote your books on those sites. Who likes that person at the party who constantly talks about themselves? No one. So why do that on social media? Or on your blog? Or anywhere? I’m not saying, don’t promote yourself; what I’m saying is become a genre provider. For me, I work in dark fiction, so I promote other works in my genre and when I do promote myself, I try not to overdue things. If you’re into fantasy, talk about whatever it is about fantasy that you love. If you like science-fiction, talk about new things in that area. For me, I review horror books, movies, I do other author interviews, and so forth. Currently, my blog has taken on a series of reviews called, Universal Monsters in Review. Every week, on the same day of the week, I’ve invited other writers and authors to post a review on whatever monster is on the roster for that week. Also, newsletters I’m told are equally important. Recently, I did a book signing, the result of that event you can find on my blog. Needless-to-say, be real. Don’t be a spaz and post or talk nothing but “buy my book” links. Be genuine and honest and people will jive with that. If you talk only about yourself, you’ll more than likely become either unfriended, or worse, unfollowed.
