RHYSON

She doesn’t wear my ring.
We never stood before a preacher.
The only vows exchanged were between our bodies; between our souls.
But she was mine and I was hers until I ruined it. I have to believe that every day, every step, every breath brings me closer to making things right.
To making her mine again.

KAI

I’ve seen promises broken.
I know love makes no guarantees.
But things were different for Rhys and me, until he lied, and I walked away. Only there’s a chain between our hearts that I can’t break. Even if I forgive him, a shadow from my past hangs over us; over this love that reaches all the way down to my soul.

“Rhys?”

His name rushes from my mouth on a breath, and I’m off the bed, hurling myself at him top speed. Somehow my legs wrap around his waist and my arms tangle behind his neck. I couldn’t hold back and play this cool if I wanted to. Every part of me that’s been fighting to stay focused, to keep working, to be on, collapses against him. Surrenders to the feel of him in my arms and the smell of him. My fingers lace through his hair. I scatter kisses across his face, the sharp angles and taut skin warm beneath my lips.

“So I take it you’re happy to see me?” He chuckles, pressing his forehead to mine, hands squeezing my thighs.

“Happy?” I release something that’s half a sob, half a laugh, pulling back a few centimeters to let him breathe. “What gave you that idea?”

We stop grinning at the same time, laughter dissolving, our bodies exchanging sensual information. My breasts flattened to his chest. His erection growing and hardening against my core. Our breaths mingling and hearts tattooing beats through our clothes and into the other’s skin.

I move first, leaning in to capture his bottom lip between mine, sucking and pulling between my teeth. Licking into his mouth like there’s honey hidden inside. He groans into the kiss, walking backward until we reach the bed and dropping me so I bounce a little, his eyes roving over me head to toe.

“Pep, what the hell are you wearing?” Humor and desire tussle in his eyes.

I look down, laughing when I see the young Jackson brothers emblazoned across my chest, my legs ending in the footed bottoms.

“If I’d known you were coming, I could have made sexier arrangements.”

“Arrangements?” He quirks a dark brow, placing a knee on either side of my legs, hovering over me like a promise. “Lingerie would have been nice. Other rock stars have girlfriends who wear lingerie.”

“Oh, are you referring to yourself as a rock star now?” I grin up at him, feeling whole for the first time since he kissed me goodbye a week ago. “That’s not egomaniacal at all. Is there a club? You guys have rock star meetings? Does one of you take rock star minutes?”

“You are sitting in here listening to my music in the dark.” He leans forward to tug at the zipper beneath my chin. “Maybe you’re actually one of my crazed fans. Or a groupie. I might even find a Mrs. Rhyson Gray t-shirt around here somewhere. My girlfriend doesn’t like those.”

“No, she doesn’t.” I shake my head, eyes never straying from his.

A small frown jerks his brows together. He tugs again at the zipper, but it doesn’t budge.

“Pep, it’s stuck,” he says.

“Sometimes it does that,” I answer easily, enjoying the frustration spreading over his expression as he keeps pulling and it keeps staying.

He places my hand over his cock, hard and poking through his jeans.

“Well, it’s not exactly a good time for it to do that.”

I laugh, grasping my zipper and tugging. Wow, it really is stuck. These are vintage PJs, older than I am and threadbare in places. I’m surprised the zipper hasn’t rusted before now. I sit up, bringing our bodies closer as I jiggle the little hook a few times. Nothing.

“Just how attached are you to this Jackson Five onesie?” His glance burns hot across my subtle curves visible through the thin flannel, telegraphing his intentions.

“Well this is Michael’s original nose.” I release a fake exasperated sigh. “But I do have my sewing kit.”

“All I needed to hear.”

Sorry, boys.

He grabs the two ends of the collar separated by the zip line and pulls until there’s a ripping sound, the panels falling back to reveal my naked breasts and my panties. A wicked grin spreads across lips.

“You naughty girl.” He runs a finger over the writing on the front of my calendar panties, carrying a current that simultaneously hitches my breath and gets me wet. “Wearing Monday panties on a Thursday. My little rebel.”

EXCERPT

“Who are you sending to get these men?”
The General looked at Commander Mitchell. Sunny looked as well and found her staring back at her.
“we have four teams,” Commander Mitchell said. “Each team has been assigned a historian advisor and a medical team. You, Lieutenant Blake, are Alpha team. You’re going back for the first warrior in two days’ time. Your historian will give you the information you need to rescue him. Once you get him back here the medical team and the Council will take over. If he decides to stay he’ll be assigned to your squad. We expect the men we save to help us bring back more soldiers and supplies while we familiarize them with our world. Any other questions?”
“Yes, ma’am,” Sunny said. “Who am I retrieving?”
“Jefferson W. Stone,” Commander Mitchell said.
“The twenty-third? The one who died in 2125?” Sunny had to work hard to keep the excitement from her voice.
Commander Mitchell nodded. “We thought it was appropriate to choose him first since this is the twenty-third century.”
General Davis stood. “Lieutenant Blake, get some rest and report to your historian at zero six hundred. At this time, we’ve covered everything and you’re all dismissed.”
Sunny and the other lieutenants saluted then left the room. Once they were out of sight of the Council chambers the squad leaders surrounded Sunny and the ribbing began.
“Wow! Jefferson W. Stone the Twenty-third! Your all-time huge crush!” Kelby Barker said, then laughed.
Before Sunny could answer, Ginny Johnson piped up, “According to his biography you’re his type. Tall and curvy with big,” she held her hands at her chest then moved them out several inches and laughed.
“Maybe we should put her in a chastity belt. We might have one in storage somewhere,” Lieutenant Jo Miller said.
“There’s no need,” Sunny said.
“No need? He’s all you ever talked about after you saw his picture in his biography,” Lieutenant Dean said. “And, by the way, we know you tore his picture out of the book.”
“You can’t prove that.” Sunny laughed. “Remember I’ve read his biography‐.”
“You mean you’ve practically memorized it,” Jo said.
“I prefer to say I’ve studied his book but either way I know his secrets. I think I can handle him.” The initial excitement she’d felt was sinking in and becoming a reality. What would it be like to stand next to him? To be able to reach out and touch him? A man from the past that she’d never dreamt she’d meet much less have a chance to get to know. Stone was a man’s man and he’d appeared in most of her dreams for the last eleven years.
“The book says a lot of women have handled him,” Lieutenant Douglas said then winked and added, “Or rather he handled them.”
“They say when he died, the women he made love to grieved for him for the rest of their lives,” Lieutenant Dean said with an envious heartfelt sigh.
“Bull crap,” Sunny said. “They probably said good riddance, got married, and never gave him another thought.”
Ginny laughed. “Well, just in case we get lucky, and he’s as horny and energetic as his biography says, I’m going to the clinic to see if they have any kind of contraceptives.”
“I’ll come with you,” Kelby said.
“Me, too.” Jo said then looked at Sunny. “Coming?”
“No and all of you need to remember I called dibs on Stone ten years ago. So hands off, ladies.”
“That was just a game we played at your sixteenth birthday party,” Jo said.
“Too bad. Dibs are dibs,” Sunny said. “Jo, you claimed Calder Campbell. Ginny you claimed Blade Lawrence and Kelby you claimed Gideon Williams. I’m enforcing the claim on Stone.”
“Spoilsport,” Ginny said.
Sunny laughed and hurried away while inside one phrase repeated in her mind‐hot damn, I’m going to meet Jefferson Wakefield Stone in the flesh!

Exclusive Excerpt:

I hand him the glass. “We’re back to spitting insults, hm? What is this, Alex’s nine circles of booze hell?”

He pulls me toward him, and suddenly I find myself in his lap, straddling him. “No, but since going to hell is inevitable,” he says, his lips brushing the spot between my two ladies. “I might as well enjoy the ride.”

I keep telling myself he’s drunk. Doesn’t change the fact that I want to unzip his freaking jeans, though. “You’re out of your mind if you think I’m screwin’ you, Alex.”

“Am I?” He runs his thumbs over my bra, turning my nipples into rocks. “Then why does your heart beat like the overheated engine of my Mustang?”

“It does not,” I insist.

He pushes up, and his hard-on presses against my sweet spot. “Yeah. Yeah, it does.”

I dig my nails into his shoulders. “Alex,” I moan, trying to get off him. “Stop it, please.” It’s supposed to sound like a goddamn order, but comes out as desperate begging.

His hands glued to my ass, he tugs me against his chest. “I know you want me.” He kisses down my neck. “You always want me. Just admit it,” he says, pulling my shirt up.

I close my eyes. Hips rocking back and forth, I enjoy the feeling of the fabric rubbing against my heat. I do want him. Fuck, I need him, but he’s like a drug, makes you high and leaves you dry and boneless. “Alex, please…stop.”

“Just one night.” His husky voice makes my toes curl. “For the sake of old times. What do you say?”

“Beautifully written and unrelentingly fast paced, this novel draws you in from the beginning The twists and turns show up without warning making this a very intriguing read.” ~Mensa Mama (Amazon Review)

“It’s getting late. C’mon. I’ll walk you home.” He scooted his chair back and stood up, picking up his empty dishes and cup. Kit did likewise, and within moments, they’d exited the coffee shop and made their way back to her apartment. When they reached the outside front door to the building, she turned to say goodbye. “Thanks for dinner and going walking with me. I really enjoyed getting out tonight.” “You were a great tour guide, and I liked the stories, though they were tragic.” He leaned against the doorframe, his body hemming her in against the door. “But I guess that’s what makes them intriguing in their own twisted way.” An unexplained shyness crept over her again. He was so close to her, warm breath caressing her ear. She managed a grin. “Yes, tragedy has its own appeal.” Steven’s breathing picked up a faster pace, and his eyes glistened with urgency. “Kit, do you mind me being forward and doing one last thing before I go?” A rush of excitement quickened her pulse. He didn’t need to ask permission or speak. All he needed to do was act. She didn’t flinch when he turned up her face to his with a gentle lift of his finger, and settled his lips onto hers with the most intense kiss. Her mouth opened, receiving his insistent tongue, soft and moist, gracing her with tender flicks and caresses. Time stood still while she briefly drowned in his embrace. The inside of her body mimicked a blazing fire. What she wouldn’t give to let this moment with him last forever. When the reality of it hit her senses, she tensed a little and pulled away, overwhelmed and unable to handle more. “Did I do something wrong?” He hugged her. “Maybe I jumped too soon. I’m so sorry.” “No, it’s okay. You’re fine. I promise.” Kit delivered him a nervous grin, stroking his cheek. “You’re, um, awfully good at kissing. The best I’ve had in a long time.” “Yeah?” He let out a soft chuckle. “I find that hard to believe.” She grimaced. “I wish I was lying, but then I’d be lying.” He laughed again. “You’re cute, you know that?” The smile left his face, and he peered down at her again. “Can I have one more kiss before I go back to my place?” Not waiting for an answer, he kissed her again, with more passion than before, leaving her breathless. “There, now I think that ought to do it.” With a stroke of his finger, he brushed away a wisp of hair from her forehead. “Go ahead and unlock the door so I can see that you got inside safe and sound.” She inserted the key and opened the door. “Okay, I’m in now. My apartment is just at the top of those stairs. I’ll lock this one.” “Very good.” He stepped back. “Can we get together again?” Kit shot him a wide grin. “I’d love to. We’ll hook up and work out the details.” “Can’t wait.” Steven waved before heading off into the night. When he’d become no more than a ghostly etch in the darkness, she turned around and went inside. Across the street, the clock from the church chimed the nighttime hour. Time for bed, or time for a new beginning? For the moment, both sounded right.

Author Interview Questions

  1. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?  Probably in 2008, when self-publishing was just being birthed. I was walking through the mall near where I live, and I saw an office with a display in the window: Telling your stories, publishing your dreams. This publisher really just offered author services under one roof, and that’s what you paid for, the editing, proofing, cover design, and formatting, and the ISBN numbers. You got support, and the rights and royalties were all yours. I published two non-fiction books using their services. When I discovered Holly Lisle’s online writing courses, I studied those and didn’t look back. In 2012 I published my first novel. This time, I did all the work by myself, choosing my ancillary help. I’d never thought I could write a novel. If you study writing and some dos and don’ts, all you need is a good idea and lots of imagination and time.
  2. How long does it take you to write a book? I’m one of these write-a-book-a-year type people. I may can swing two if they’re novellas. I don’t rush, and I don’t pressure myself. That’s the beauty of being indie/hybrid.
  3. What is your work schedule like when you’re writing? I work a day job Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. That only gives me weekends, holidays, or days off from work to write. So I have to make the most of my time. When I’m stuck, I spend way too much time on social media trying to network/learn about the publishing industry/craft of writing/marketing. But much of the time, it’s because I’m at a stand-still on my story. When I have my ideas going, I can spend a few hours at it.
  4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk? I line up three of those wishing troll dolls on my desk … No! I really don’t do that. I’m not sure that I have a writing quirk. It’s not like I have to do something in long-hand with pen and paper first, or it’s not like I have to go meditate (probably wouldn’t be a bad idea). But I do have to let a topic simmer in my mind before I just dive into it. I’ve tried using charts or question/answer type exercises, but find I really don’t use those well, either. I have to let the story come to boil in bits and pieces.
  5. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books? From family members, from co-workers, from just the tiniest thing. For example, my niece likes to use body pens to draw intricate designs on the backs of people’s hands or on their arms (like Henna painting but not). Next thing you know, I’m plotting something in my head, using an adult version of her, picturing her in my head using those body paints to get something more she wants—something unsavory and gruesome, really. So one thing leads to another.
  6. When did you write your first book and how old were you? I was around 47 years old. I’d spent the year before writing it.
  7. What do you like to do when you’re not writing? I enjoy reading other books, working in my retail shop, and I’ve just found joy in coloring in the new adult coloring books that are all the rage.
  8. What does your family think of your writing? My family, unfortunately, doesn’t read. My mother doesn’t care for what I write and doesn’t read it. Neither does my spouse, though he loves contributing ideas to the plot lines. I was surprised to find that many authors say they get no support from friends or family, or that they see eyes glaze over when they talk about their work. I was always so different in that regard. When someone told me they wrote books, I always checked out their work to see if I liked it.
  9. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books? That a castrated male can still perform. No, seriously. I write erotica sometimes, and in one of my books in my Pleasure House Tales collection there is a character who … Anyway, no matter what you write, there will always be research involved, so you’ll learn lots of things. No one knows it all, even if they think they do. The other thing that surprises me when I create books is that each story seems to tell itself. The interesting thing is that the authors voice changes with it, though there still may be the presence of their underlying style.
  10. What do you think makes a good story? I think a story that pulls you into it is always a good story. I’m one of those people who can be pulled in by the subject matter, the theme, the journey, as well as action/adventure. I can read with a reasonable amount of belief suspension. Stories that interest me won’t always be those that interest others. I don’t always cop to the run-of-the-mill tropes, though I feel like I have to write them sometimes. I still like my stories, but I wish more people enjoyed the odd and unusual. Don’t care for brutal or violent stories.

Beguiling by Alex Lucian

Hate: to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward.

Scarlet Jennings, the preacher’s daughter who lived across the street, was a royal, uptight pain in my ass. When she looked at me, she saw a college quarterback asshole with rocks for brains, but she didn’t have a single word for what was happening between us.

When we were forced to ride together every single day that summer, there was definitely some dislike going on. Extreme hostility was a given, considering that we were spending so much time together in close quarters.
One night of bed-breaking, body-shattering, lose-your-voice-from-screaming passion had surprised us both, but it was only just the beginning…

Lucky Penny
By L.A. Cotton

WTMO synops.jpg

I was his lucky Penny. He was my light in the dark, hope in despair. Our bond was one of survival, friendship… first love.

But then we were ripped apart and Blake Weston became the memory I turned to when everything else in my life fell apart.

Seven years later, a summer working at Camp Chance is supposed to be my fresh start. Beautiful scenery and the chance to better the lives of foster children – kids like me. But when my eyes land on him across the fire, time stands still and feelings come rushing back to the surface. I thought I’d moved on, tucked him away in my heart. One look into his soulful blue eyes and I know I’m wrong. Blake Weston can heal the broken parts of me. Restore my hope. Love me.

It’s our second chance. A sign we are supposed to be together.

Isn’t it?

I was twelve when I survived the accident that killed my parents. Fourteen when I survived the devil. And sixteen, when I survived a heartbreak of the worst kind.

But in my twenty-three years, Blake Weston might just be the first thing I won’t survive.

WTMO Excerpt.jpg

“Oh, come on, Penny. I know you two have a rough history, but it’s just that, history. In the past. You can’t let your past dictate your future. Mold you, sure, but define you? Nuh-uh! The Penny I’ve watched grow over the last couple of months is stronger than that.”

Was I?

Most days, I didn’t feel it.

I’d made progress, sure, but the truth was that I was still tethered to the ghosts of my past in ways I hadn’t even realized until I saw Blake again.

So much pain tainted our story, I didn’t know if we could rewrite ourselves a new ending… or beginning.

“You’re overthinking this.” Marissa took my hand in hers. “I’ve watched the two of you together. Everything you felt for Blake all of those years ago is still there. It’s written all over your face every time you look at him. And I don’t doubt for a second that it’s the same for him.”

Warmth spread into my cheeks, and I dropped my eyes. Why couldn’t I just be normal instead of damaged and confused and terrified to step out of the shadows?

Why couldn’t I let myself live in the moment for once.

“I know you’re scared,” Marissa went on. “And that’s okay. But tell me one thing, Penny. Can you live with yourself if you leave here without giving him a chance? A real chance?”

I looked over at the lake where Blake’s group was attempting to cross the water on homemade rafts. His polo shirt clung to his chest as he helped a boy onto the floatation device.

“Well, can you?”

Could I?

Blake had healed me once, and then he had broken me in a way from which I never truly recovered. But somewhere over the last two months, he had started to put me back together. Piece by piece. My head had warned me, tried to keep me away, but my heart recognized him. They called to each other, sought each other out.

Blake already owned my heart.

He always had.

But could I give him my damaged soul as well?

Emma’s Blaze by Marie Piper

Bill McKenzie’s yearly cattle drive brings more than the normal challenges…

The oldest and most responsible of the rowdy McKenzie brothers, Bill is in charge of their biggest task of the season. But while wrangling cattle, he crosses paths with a beautiful red-haired woman in a tattered dress in desperate need of help.

Is she as harmless as she is beautiful?

Suspicions arise when the red-haired beauty—who calls herself Sparrow—withholds the story of how she came to be in the woods. All Bill knows is she’s headed for Cricket Bend, where his brother was murdered a year earlier. Though he vowed to steer clear of that dusty town, he can’t let her run straight into bandit country with no protection. First, they have to make it through the cattle drive—and the mysterious woman is going with them.

Women are bad luck on the trail…

Though they’re strangers, the magic of the Wild West brings the pair together with a passion they can’t fight. But when her journal is stolen by Bill’s brother, Andrew, he discovers her true identity—and two scandalous secrets.

One thing Bill learns is the open range is full of possibilities. Neither of them imagined their paths would cross, but once they had, there was no turning back.

Is her tainted past enough to tear them apart? And if not, what will come of their blazing romance when that same past threatens their future?

“This life—the drives—it ain’t the future. Folks are buying land. Soon there won’t be open land, maybe there won’t even be cattlemen. If I’m being honest, this is likely the last drive we’ll ever do.”
“Is it?”
“Cattle travels by trains now, mostly. And folks are switching over to stockier breeds of cows that are easier to raise than longhorns. Things are changing. My mama says it’s progress. There’ll always be ranches, and folks’ll always eat beef, but life sure won’t be like this much longer.”
A hawk swooped overhead, and Bill pointed at it. Sparrow watched the bird fly off into the open sky that stretched on for miles and miles, a blanket of blue as far as the eye could see. He watched her as she took in everything around her, even the stomping cows trailing behind them. Finally, she spoke. “That’ll be a sad day, I suppose. The end of something simple and beautiful.”
“A man’s gotta keep moving.”
“Amen.”
“Speaking of moving,” he began. “Where will you go once you’ve caught up to the man you’re seeking? I’m guessing it’s a man. Correct me if I’m wrong.”
“He is.”
“He hurt you?”
“No,” she said. “He stole from from me.”
“What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to get it back.”
“How?”
“I haven’t quite figured that out yet.”
“What will you do after you get it back?”
“After? I…don’t know, honestly.”
“Between not knowing how you’re going to get back your money, and what you’re going to do after, I have to say your plan might not be too well laid-out.”
“My plan also didn’t involve cattlemen.”

Watching Andrew’s cocky smirk as he dealt a hand, she knew he wasn’t expecting much of her abilities. But she could also tell the moment he cheated. With what he thought was skill, he slipped a card up into the sleeve of his shirt. It was a basic cheat. Emma had pulled it herself and seen it done a hundred times.
Over her shoulder, she knew Appie watched as he cooked. Maybe Andrew needed to be brought down a notch, faced head-on and left in the dust. She intended to do just that, and was happy when Pete arrived to witness the action.
She would take Andrew down, and it would be a show.
The cards she held weren’t bad, though Andrew had obviously cheated with the intention of giving himself better cards. Had she been a less skilled player, he’d have been able to win instantly. It was a good trick. Whoever had taught him how to cheat had been pretty good.
Emma, however, had been taught to cheat by the very best.
Poker face, Emma.
That voice came to her mind once again, spurring her to sit up tall. It was time to be The Sparrow. She adjusted the cards in her hand as she spoke. “You ever planning to play that queen?”
“Pardon me?”
“The queen.”
“Which queen?”
“The one in your sleeve.”
She lay down a pair of jacks and waved a finger absent-mindedly toward his arm. “Saw you tuck it. The left sleeve. Queen of diamonds, I’d wager.”
“What would you wager?”
Emma looked across the table with a flat expression. “More than you’ve got, cowboy.”
Pete whistled, and Andrew glared at him. Emma kept her face unreadable, though she felt like giggling and clapping. Nothing was as much fun as busting a bad cheater. “The card.”
“You’re crazy.”
Emma set down her cards. “Am I? Show me what’s in your left sleeve.”
“Show her,” Pete said. “You wouldn’t cheat a lady, would you?”
Andrew reached into his sleeve and pulled out a card. It was, indeed, a queen of diamonds.
“Woo!” Pete exclaimed in triumph. “She schooled you.”
“Shut up,” Andrew grumbled, grabbing his cards back.
“The big shot got called out by a woman. No offense, ma’am.”
“I take no offense at being called a woman. After all, I am one.” Emma watched Andrew try to hide his fury. It didn’t work, and he damn near exploded as he leapt to his feet.
“Will you dance with me?” Hope shone in her lovely eyes.
“Here?”
“Right here.”
Accompanied by the soft music, Bill reached out a hand and set it on Emma’s waist. Gently, half afraid she’d startle and run off, he stepped closer. She lay one hand in his waiting palm, the other on his shoulder. They began to move.
They danced simply but well, two people who fit together. For a large cowboy, Bill knew how to lead, and she allowed him to do just that. Thinking of her foot, he lifted her a little, which allowed her to lean her weight on him so as to keep it off her injury. The dance turned into two bodies swaying together. He became vividly aware of how she pressed her whole body to his.
“You dance quite well,” she whispered. “I’ll admit I’m surprised.”
“My mama insisted we boys all learn,” he replied. “Said it was a good way to woo the ladies.”
“And was she right?”
“Why don’t you tell me?”
“Consider me thoroughly wooed.”
Bill took his hand from her waist and let it slide lower to rest on the curve of her hip. Once it was there, he dragged his fingers over the bare skin just below the hem of the shirt. Emma pressed herself tighter against him. Knowing that only a little fabric separated them charged Bill with desire he could barely restrain. He wanted to know her in whatever way he could. Emma brought her arms up and draped them around his neck, urging him closer to her. Bill moved his hands to her waist and took a hard grip of the fabric of the shirt. “Your lips are a little blue,” he said.
“I’m soaked through,” she replied. “I am a bit cold.”
“Someone should warm you up.”
“Someone should. If only there were someone near who was up for the chore.”
“It’d hardly be a chore.” Even if kissing her was a stupid thing to do, it was the only thing in the world that seemed right at that moment, and he was going to do it, and he wasn’t going to stop there unless she told him to. He knew she wouldn’t. Wanting each other wasn’t a crime. The lean majesty of her body trembled against him when he pressed his face into her hair. With his fingers splayed against her lower back, he brought their bodies tighter together.
Lord, what had she done to him in just a few days?

When a Laird Loves a Lady by Julie Johnstone

He felt as if he had suddenly been robbed of his ability to breathe. His lungs tightened. Love. He had no use for the emotion or the word. It pained him to know what he was about to say would hurt her, but he wanted to be certain she understood. ‘I want no part of love.’ She quickly glanced back up at him, her gaze locking with his, and her lips parted slightly. ‘You cannot mean that.’ The misery that still haunted him from losing Catriona wedged especially heavey in this moment when faced with the stark truth that he was marrying yet again. ‘I do mean it, Marion, and I’m sorry. I have been married before. I loved my wife, and when she died, so did my desire and my ability to love that way again.’

indexCan the death of a loved one stop someone’s heart from loving again? Johnstone’s historical romance really exposes the raw emotion of love for what it is—vulnerability that can be harnessed into strength. This tale is of a Scottish Laird who has fallen victim to the King’s orders of marriage to ensure safety in exchange for a man’s release from imprisonment. When a Laird Loves a Lady holds depth, historical adventure, emotional prevalence and timeless romance. Johnstone provides a riveting and fascinating story that will captivate readers who enjoy this genre.

Iain and Marion are two individuals who are looking for their freedom within their own means. Iain must strike a bargain with King Edward for David’s release. Marion must free herself from an unwanted marriage to a vile man named Froste. Both Iain and Marion, in their own way, are lost souls who are searching for happiness. Iain has the strength and knowledge of a warrior, but Marion has the mindset and emotional capacity to withstand anything, even a thick-headed brute like Iain. She is all too determined to marry for love, especially after watching her mother perish at her father’s expense. He never loved her mother, nor her. His words spoke volumes, but his actions were unforgivable. With the help of a friend, Angus helps Marion escape—only to be caught by the one and only, Froste himself. With her options now running out and her distress caused from her friends punishment in aiding her escape, who will save her from the pain and brutality that her father is forcing her to bound herself to?

Johnstone almost has a poetic vibe to her words and the rhythm with which she carries the story. It is clear that she has a profound knowledge of history and a lot of research went into her story. This author does a superb job with character development and originality. The pace is very fluid and quick, but not so quick as to hinder understanding or perception. As this story progresses, it becomes more of an adventure for both Iain and Marion. If you are a reader of historical romance, this may be an exciting read for you.
