Beguiling by Alex Lucian

Hate: to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward.
Scarlet Jennings, the preacher’s daughter who lived across the street, was a royal, uptight pain in my ass. When she looked at me, she saw a college quarterback asshole with rocks for brains, but she didn’t have a single word for what was happening between us.
When we were forced to ride together every single day that summer, there was definitely some dislike going on. Extreme hostility was a given, considering that we were spending so much time together in close quarters.
One night of bed-breaking, body-shattering, lose-your-voice-from-screaming passion had surprised us both, but it was only just the beginning…

Game of Fear by Gledé Browne Kabongo

Somebody is calling my name. It sounds far away. I could have imagined it, though. I stand glued to the spot in front of my locker. It looks harmless, just a space to store my things, made of metal and red paint. I shouldn’t worry. Except, there’s a monster in my bag, an envelope I’m afraid to open. It all started with my locker. Then came the late night phone call and the threatening text. There must be a connection.

51dkY5LBl1L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_Fear can make the most successful and well-tempered individuals crumble to their knees in desperation. Kabongo capitalizes on this primal emotion throughout her story by allowing a psychological suspense to build up as the story progresses. Abbie Cooper is a good girl by nature, except for that one time when she became so lost—she couldn’t keep up. When her mother was locked away in jail for suspected murder, Abbie completely fell apart. She couldn’t keep her grades up and she couldn’t sleep. All of the hard work that she put into her schooling thus far would be in vain if she gave up now. There was only one way out and she knew that it wasn’t going to be suspension. Abbie has a secret that she planned on taking to the grave—if anyone ever found out…it could end her dreams of becoming a successful medical practitioner backed by an Ivy League school.

Abbie Cooper is young, beautiful, smart and patient. She has friends, enemies and thanks to a boy named Christian—she also can’t say that she has an uneventful love life. Kabongo takes this character and breaks apart her life in a step-by-step process, allowing the reader to form their own opinions about what kind of person Abbie Cooper really is. For the most part, she is that typical girl who has fallen victim to her past mistakes. The way that Abbie holds judgement over others can be seen as a foreshadowing of future events, but her motives can still be viewed as questionable. Does this make her less innocent? Does this make her a hypocrite? Only the reader can make that decision.

The author does a nice job with character development and credibility. As this story unfolds, so many factors come to play into these character’s lives. With emotional conflict that will test limits and morale, Kabongo has a riveting novel that will leave readers with intrigue. If you are a reader of psychological suspense and/or women’s fiction, this may be for you. Game of Fear can be read as a standalone, but Abbie Cooper’s character is first introduced in the novel called Swan Deception.

Review: The Body in the Landscape by Larissa Reinhart

I wanted a distraction. The local phone book had contained Abel Spencer’s address. My lodge had contained a local phone book. Some would call that a sign. Or Standard hotel phone book practice. Either way, I felt a quick visit to Mr. Spencer’s homestead in order. Just to round out my curiosity on the man. I couldn’t focus on schmoozing while my brain kept taking trips to what’s-the-deal-with-Abel-Spencer land. I’l admit my brain doesn’t always work like others. It runs along the tracks toward Morbidity and Inquisitiveness Junction. Often with a quick stop at Meddling-ville. We’ll just chalk it up to my artistic nature and not to my constant need to fix lemonade in my life’s contact barrage of lemons.

26790019ABOUT THE BOOK: When Cherry Tucker’s invited to paint the “kill portrait” for the winner of Big Rack Lodge’s Hogzilla hunt, it seems like a paid vacation. Back home in Halo, a Hatfield-McCoy-style standoff builds between Luke and Cherry’s families. She’s ready for a weekend away, hobnobbing with rich and famous hunters, where she can forget her troubles and nobody knows her name.

As Georgia sunshine turns to bleak December rain, Cherry’s R&R goes MIA when she finds a body in the woods. While the police believe the local drunk took an accidental spill, Cherry has her doubts, particularly when a series of malicious pranks are targeted at the rifle toting contestants. With loyal companions at her side—sort-of-ex-husband Todd and a championship bayer named Buckshot—Cherry tracks suspects through a forest full of pitfalls and perils. And all the while, a killer’s stalking the hunt party with a bead on Cherry.

REVIEW: An artist’s perception of the life around them is filled with creativity, intrigue and sometimes—downright troublesome curiosity. Reinhart captivates her readers with this novel by allowing the murderous viewpoint to be addressed by a painter. Cherry Tucker is the mysterious problem solver who always needs to meddle into the cases within local law enforcement. Her decision to take a small trip for commission has gone awry—very awry. With the knowledge that she holds, her actions speak volumes—which makes her seem more like an annoyance than someone who truly wants to help in catching the criminal.

Upon Cherry’s first day out in the field, she spots a blue speck that doesn’t belong in a landscape—in a sea of browns and greens. With her curiosity peaked, she heads over to investigate what is assumed to be a piece of trash. Soon, she discovers a blue ball cap and then a body. While Cherry’s intentions are typically good, her gut instinct has always led her to sniff out the truth—no matter the costs. Since everyone is going hunting, her commission coming from the winner’s portrait being painted, Cherry fears that the Hogzilla might not be the only thing that is being hunted.
Reinhart has a vast array of personalities and she does a superb job with character development as well as credibility. As this story reaches its climax, so many factors are thrown into the mix which always leaves this mystery—well, a mystery. It is not difficult to identify reasons to why everyone may have an investment in murdering another local…could a secret have been learned? Could Mr. Spencer have walked in on something? Could he be that notoriously disliked? After two more bodies are found through the hunting excursion, Cherry is determined more than ever to find the one responsible.
With such a charismatic and practical Nancy Drew plot, the author is leading her readers into a basic murder investigation; however, the wonder and curiosity will always be the same—interest and general curiosity. Reinhart has a compelling novel that will leave readers with the desire to read through the entire investigation, until the suspect is found. If you are a reader of mystery, this may be an interest to you. The Body in the Landscape is the fifth installment in the Cherry Tucker Mysteries; however, it can be read as a standalone for those who want to pick up their copy.

Our love is imperfect in the most perfect way.

Book Blurb #1
Our love is imperfect in the most perfect way. It is love done our way. Raw. Unconventional. Sexy as hell. More importantly, it is honest to the core…Or so I think.
One little, white lie shouldn’t do so much damage. Yet, it changes me forever.
The worst part is that Declan whispers that sweet nothing out of protection. My safety is in the forefront of his mind, especially since there are others who’d hurt me simply to get to him. I never consider that he will be the one to cut me so deeply. But it all starts with that first prick—the night he saves my life.

His perilous stare deepened as his grip fastened around my waist. As maniacal thoughts passed over his eyes, his grasp tightened. That look confirmed that I wasn’t the only one who wanted all the space between us eliminated.

Even if I didn’t feel the desire radiating off of him in a fury of passion, he bore that intensity in his gaze. The world around us melted away until there was only me and

About the Series:
About the Series “Once Wicked”
@unconventionaldamsels who rock piercings, refuse to conform to society’s rules, and aren’t obsessed with labels, check out the “Once Wicked” series. Happily Ever After doesn’t define the misunderstood evil villains we love to hate. Their story is so much deeper than their fairy princess counterparts, yet were never told. That’s a damn shame. They aren’t always as wicked as they are made out to be. Well, not all of them. So until the clock strikes midnight and the (other) glass shoe drops, enjoy these not-so-Prince-Charming book boyfriends in this modern series, #OnceWicked.

I never regretted the night I met Rumpelstiltskin, even if I didn’t want to be like him. I fell in love with a monster. In doing so, I became one myself.

Love can be beautiful. Love can be momentous. Love can be a curse. Pepper’s story lays out the perfect love/hate relationship, right before your eyes—with a demonic spin. This story is dark, suspenseful, emotional and enticing. By delving into the minds and personalities of the characters that are portrayed, it is easily ascertained that mixed feelings are a given. Pepper engages the reader with a dark and passionate resistance toward life and death as she guides them into the highly creative story of Rumpelstiltskin and the Pied Piper.

Piper is an exceptional woman. She is strong, confident, but innocent. Declan is evil, deceitful and manipulative. Upon her death, Piper’s final words to Declan were a truth built from a selfish love that became so powerful, it was dangerous. Her request against freedom from his love was the starting point of their shared curse—the Incubus Curse. Through much denial and pain, Piper is faced with an ultimatum. In order to adhere to her hunger, she must take the life essence of others, making her a murderer. Declan has been a murderer for centuries, but that doesn’t make her love him less. When the tides turn and her very existence becomes his weakness, the Pied Piper must decide whether life is worth living without a soul…or chancing peace in death.

The author does a superb job with character development and credibility. As this story unfolds, so many factors come to play into these character’s lives. It is not difficult to sympathize with Piper in stories such as this because there is a moral struggle that is constantly being challenged. Even more striking than that—it is also not difficult to sympathize with Declan either. With such emotional conflict, making right and wrong seem like grey areas—Pepper has a compelling novel that will leave readers with determined fascination. If you are a reader of twisted fairy tales or fantasy, you may want to pick this up—but, fair warning…this is another book that may not be easy to put down.

Emotionally lost, Cassidy desperately searches for an heirloom her boyfriend was wearing in the crash—her mother’s gold ring. But during her search, Cassidy discovers more than her ring.

She finds a gate to the Demon Realm….

A battle is brewing, and Killian—head of the Demon hunters—preps his Clan for the approaching conflict. They’ve been working to secure the gate between his realm and the mortal world. But it’s been nearly impossible since Rya—a voracious demon on a quest to expand her power—devoured the soul of his Clan’s necromancer. Now Rya is possessed with the necromancer’s powers and she may break through the gate at any moment.

Apparently Rya isn’t the only one Killian has to worry about…

When Cassidy accidentally crosses into the Demon Realm, Killian can’t understand how a human girl survived the transition. Now he has to find a way to return her to her own world, or risk her being caught in the crossfire, which is a complication he definitely doesn’t need.

Once back in the Human Realm, Cassidy readies herself for battle. She signs up for Krav Maga classes, where she meets Tyler Romaitis—a handsome, tenacious, humble guy. He seems almost perfect, but nothing is ever that easy.

And as the balance between good and evil shifts, Cassidy finds herself—and her ring—at the heart of the conflict for the survival of mankind.

“Let them in.” King Maltrier pulled in a shuddering breath and then coughed raggedly for a minute.

“Your Majesty, are you sure?” his longtime servant asked. He had the same relentless attitude that he always had, but he sounded more earnest than ever, as if he could will the King not to die.

“Get them, Solmis. Now.”

Solmis walked wearily across the darkened room. He heaved open the weathered door to the King’s bedchamber and spoke to the pair of guards standing watch, “Get the boys. The King wishes to speak with them.”

One guard punched his right fist to the left side of his chest in a formal Byern salute and then walked into the outer chamber. A moment later, he returned with two young boys with the same dark hair and blue-gray eyes that marked them as Dremylon heirs.

“This way, boys,” Solmis said. He was one of the few people who could get away with calling the Princes boys.

“Thank you, Solmis,” Edric, the crown prince, said with a smile and the confidence of someone who never wanted for anything.

The second son, Kael, pushed past them both, mimicking his brother’s stride. His face was set in a scowl. Some of his youthful exuberance had already drained out of him, and in its place was cynicism from losing a mother too young and from having a sick father, but mostly, it was from being second.

“Father,” he called out.

“Come here, Kael,” the King said. He patted the side of the bed. “You, too, Edric.”

Edric walked to his side and settled into a chair while Kael hoisted himself up onto the bed.

With Edric being fifteen and Kael at thirteen, both were much too young for this kind of loss.

The King had seen his youngest, Jesalyn, earlier that day. She had cried the entire time, understanding what was coming and knowing she could do nothing to stop it. In tears, she had run out of the room and straight into Consort Shamira’s arms. She had all but raised the child after his wife, Queen Adelaida’s unceremonious death.

But he couldn’t waste thoughts on that now. He was tiring with every passing moment. The boys…they had to know.

“Solmis,” the King said, regaining a shred of strength.

His servant, his old friend, left the room, giving them the privacy they needed.

“Father,” Kael repeated impatiently.

“I’m dying,” King Maltrier said.

Silence followed the declaration. Kael looked aghast. Edric tried to hide the shock of what he knew would be coming next.

“Edric will succeed me.”

“I’m too young to be king,” Edric whispered.

“Fifteen is not too young.” The King thought that was questionable, but he would not dispute it with his son. Edric had to be strong. He had to rule. “You have the Consort and my High Order to help and guide you.”

Edric swallowed and nodded. “Yes, Father.”

“Trust in yourself, and all will go as planned. I have formed an alliance with Aurum for Jesalyn to be queen and another with Tiek, who has offered you their young Princess Kaliana. Honor these matches to keep our people safe. A strong king is one with an heir.”

The King leaned over and coughed into a handkerchief for several minutes. His throat was raw, and his lungs ached. He didn’t know how much more he could take, but he had to pass on their legacy.

But could he put that burden on them?

He had to decide now.

No. He would tell only one. He would pass it on to the boy most like himself—the one who could handle the knowledge, the one destined to rule.

The King turned to one of his sons and said, “I need to speak with your brother alone for a moment.”

His eyebrows knit together as hurt and confusion clouded his features. “But, Father—”

“Go,” King Maltrier commanded.

He clenched his jaw, stood, and left without another word.

It was the last time the King would ever see his son.

The door closed roughly behind him.

King Maltrier turned to his other son. “You know the story of our ancestor Viktor Dremylon.”

He nodded, but the King continued anyway.

“Viktor struck down the evil Doma court that subjugated our people. Then he claimed the throne for himself with the sole purpose of ruling in a fair and just system.”

“Yes, Father.”

“History is told by the winners.”

“What do you mean?” He tilted his head and looked concerned.

Perhaps he thought the King had already lost his mind.

“Viktor did destroy the Doma court, and he ushered in a new era of Dremylon rule that has persisted two thousand years up until you today. But what is not in the stories is that the Doma court had ruled because they had powerful…abilities.”

His son laughed like his father was telling a fairy tale.

“Listen!” the King snapped. That sent him into another fit, and his son helped him sit up, so he could cough into his handkerchief.

When King Maltrier leaned back again, the King saw blood had coated the white silk.

“Father, you should rest.”

“What kind of person does it make me that I want to go to Colorado to open this new bar, but I also want you to stay here and take the opportunity my dad is giving you?”

Logan licks his lips as his head nods. “I’d say that makes you human, strong, and smart for knowing what you want in life.”

A small smile tugs at my lips. “But it also means that I’m a horrible girlfriend and I haven’t even had that title for twenty-four hours.”

“Don’t even think that. I think it’s great we aren’t letting this get in the way of success. You will do your thing there, I’ll do mine here, and we can make it work until you get back.”
