When Grayson learns Everly has returned home, he knows he has to see her. He has to find out if there is anything that can be salvaged.

Reckless Abandon picks up with Everly after five years of separation from Grayson. Her life has moved on for the better and his…for the worst. Unfortunately, Everly has to rush home due to the death of her sister and that is when her fears and worries come rolling back in as she sets her eyes on the little girl who changed her world forever…five years ago. This fragile little girl who’s life could have been lost along with her sister’s in a fatal car accident. She must decide where her heart lies since there is no one to raise her sister’s daughter, but her dream career would be over if she stayed in her hometown. And then…not only is she back, but so is Grayson and she is keeping a huge secret from him.

In this story, both Grayson and Kyle’s characters are much more distinctive in desire and personality. Both characters know exactly what they want now…and it is a little easier to breathe with less tension between the two. My favorite character is Grayson, just because he has really changed and attempting his hardest to win Everly back. He feels that he can’t live without her, but doesn’t know how he can win her heart after breaking it so completely. The emotional turmoil is a lot more serious in Reckless Abandon as opposed to the high school drama in Damaged Goods.

This book targets women of all ages. I really enjoyed reading about both characters, understanding the hardships and restraint that both of them took to get back to each other. Kyle and his new woman, someone from another book series, are wonderful together too! I would really love to read about their relationship as well as Crimson and Cole. This story was very well written and creative. The author took a lot of time with the detail and expanse of character development which I liked as well. I rate this story with five stars since I did enjoy this series; however, I still feel that her Collide series was more adaptable to my personality and I am able to relate to it at a different level.

About the Author:

J.C. Hannigan’s love of reading was spawned from a very early age. She inhaled novels with an unquenchable thirst. Eventually, that love of reading turned into a love for writing. She started to pen stories at the tender age of nine while sitting at her white desk, pencil posed over lined paper, writing countless stories about a girl, her best friend, their horses and the adventures they’d have going on trail rides together. Born with a chronic pain bone disorder called Multiple Hereditary Exostoses, she didn’t get to play sports or run amuck like her siblings and peers. Writing kept her company amid a world of surgeries, bad pain days, and isolation.

She started a blog when she was fifteen-years-old, chronicling the challenges of high school, dating, and coping with her chronic pain bone disorder. That blog went on to win a Bloggie for Best Teen Weblog, and J.C.’s ego inflated quite a bit over it (enough to continuously mention it even today).

J.C. currently resides in a small town in Ontario with her husband, their two sons, and dog. When she isn’t trying to wrangle the kids and dog, she can be found writing. In addition to writing new adult romance and suspense novels, J.C. writes a blog for the MHE Coalition, discussing the struggles of living with Multiple Hereditary Exostoses. She also contributes to several other websites, including her personal blog, the OCH Literary Society, and she is the content manager for Stigma Fighters Canada. Through her writing, J.C. brings to light awareness of mental health and social challenges. Her writing has been described as edgy, bold, poignant, and raw.

Other hobbies of J.C.’s include hiking, camping, binge-watching shows like Outlander, Game of Thrones, The Vampire Diaries, and The Walking Dead, eating dill pickle chips and daydreaming of travelling around the world. J.C. adores interacting with readers, so don’t hesitate to reach out and say hi! She tries her best to respond to every message. Becky’s Kiss by Nicholas Fisher

Becky meets the boy of her dreams, too bad he keeps disappearing.
“It could not be worse for ninth grader Becky Michigan on her first day at a new school, sitting in beet juice and staining her white jeans in a classroom about to fill up with students. In the nick of time, a gorgeous blonde boy named Danny comes in and offers his over-sized baseball jersey so she can cover up, get to the office, and change. By the time she pulls the shirt over her head, however, he has mysteriously disappeared.

Becky scours the school in search of her dream-athlete and wonders why after contact with him she has magically gained the ability to throw a fastball ninety miles per hour! Instead of finding the answer, however, Becky’s new skill pits her against the school bully and the entire varsity baseball team.

That night, after her exciting showdown in front of the entire school, Danny shows up at her bedroom window. If she will agree to meet him behind Rutledge High at midnight on the ball field at the edge of the woods, he promises to reveal a secret meant to alter the past and change her life forever.”

Character Cast

Becky Michigan
The lead character
A “country” type girl (from upstate New York) with long auburn hair, a small turned up nose, and sad puppy-dog eyes. Built slim and very athletic, though she thinks she is a klutz. Pretty, but she hasn’t learned quite yet how to “package” herself, so she thinks she comes off plain. When she tries out for the varsity baseball team at her high school and puts on the royal blue Rutledge Tigers hat, pulling all that hair through the hole in the back in a glorious ponytail, however, she realizes how shockingly pretty she is.

Danny Taragna

Becky’s love interest
Only an inch or two taller than Becky, and the epitome of the “beautiful jock,” always seen wearing his favorite little league tournament jersey, not tucked in. He is a blonde with crystal blue eyes, arching eyebrows, and high cheekbones. Like a cherub. He is humble and quietly clever, the type that “wears skinny well.”

Cody Hatcher

The class bully
Tall with unkempt long black hair. Mole under one cheek. Peach fuzz goatee. Often wears an army jacket and dirty sneakers. Wise guy in class as well as the hallways. The type that tenses up the mood of the class, goading others to challenge the teacher, then leaning back in his chair saying “Oooh,” to instigate. The type of guy that cuts himself shaving and wears that little piece of toilet paper with the red dot on it into school.

Becky Michigan walks into 9th grade English class on the second day of school, slightly late, and the atmosphere is tense.

She pushed inside.
“Meyers…” Mr. Marcus called out.
“Here,” some guy said, his voice cracking a bit on the first ‘e,’ and the class laughing back at him. The chairs were arranged in the ‘U’ shape like yesterday, with Becky’s seat at the far corner under a Salinger poster. But today, all the desks had been pushed back farther, so close to the wall that she had to make kids shove in as she passed. Teachers were insane and cruel, they really, really were.
“Messersmith,” Mr. Marcus said.
“What! What?” She was had short hair and a ton of bracelets going up her arm. Mr. Marcus looked up with a thin smile.
“Take out your ear buds, and you’ll better know the volume of your voice.”
The girl was a statue. The smile on the teacher’s face vanished.
“I hear you! Whatever! She took them out and folded her arms. Becky rounded the near corner of the ‘U’ and banged her book bag on the laptop cart parked behind her, blunder number one of the day. Slow down! she thought. One step at a time, and of course, her bag swung back a tad and brushed the crown of this muscled guy in a black t-shirt, blunder number two and counting. He hunched in and rubbed the back of his crew cut.
“Head shot, dude. Hit in the head. Can I go to the nurse?”
“No,” Mr. Marcus replied.
“I gotta see the counselor,” someone else chipped in.
“Not today.”
“I left my calculator on the bus,” another tried.
“Buy another.”
“My cell buzzed. It’s my mom. Can I take it?”
“What’s for homework?”
“It’s on the board.”
“Where’s the pencil sharpener?”
“Michigan,” Mr. Marcus said.
“Here.” She had arrived at her seat, and she’d also pretty much solved the mystery of the little rebellion going on. The guy sitting in the chair next to hers had been absent yesterday, and he was clearly establishing himself as the class troublemaker—tall and wiry, knees and elbows everywhere, flannel shirt with a rip in the elbow. He had chin-zits slightly covered by a peach fuzz goatee, haphazard hair curling up a bit on the sides, and a big mole under his left cheekbone. And all through Becky’s awkward entry, he’d been rocking back and forth in his chair, hooting at each outburst, and adding a little “Ooooh-ahhh” at each of Mr. Marcus’s retorts. He wasn’t even the one misbehaving, at least not in any provable way. He was just the instigator, sitting back and prodding.
He also had his foot up on Becky’s chair. Black Converse high top. Dirty too.

Character Interviews

Jackson Pierce

1. Who has had the most influence on you?
I’d like to think Otis and V, but I know living with the Donohues for most of my life has played a role in who I am today.
2. Do you have a criminal record of any kind?
Hmmm, can we skip this question. No? Fine, if Marcus Donohue didn’t have a very expensive lawyer on his side, my rap sheet would be a lot longer than it is now.
3. When was the time you were the most frightened?
When Ana was kidnapped. I’ve never been more terrified, it was intense and something I never wanted to experience again. Ever.
4. If you could change one thing from your past, what would it be, and why?
Oh, man, so many things. But, you know what, we all make mistakes. It’s about what you do with them that counts. Rise above them or live in their shadows. I’m done letting the past define me.
5. What is your best memory?
Pretty much every ‘Ana’ moment. She’s my light. But, if I had to pick just one… Shakespeare Alphabet down on the beach. Every. Single. Time.

Ana Parry

1. What is your greatest fear?
Being alone – like truly alone in the world. After my parents died that’s how it felt. I never want to feel that way again. Ever.
2. What are your religious views?
I don’t pray to a god, but I believe in a higher power. Something bigger than us. Occasionally, I ask for guidance, but don’t we all when things get too tough?
3. Do you believe in the existence of soul mates and/or true love?
I didn’t. Now, now I’m not so sure. Do I think fate brought me to Jackson, yes? Does that make him my soul mate? I don’t know… but it’s a nice idea, isn’t it!
4. How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings (i.e. do you hide your true self from others, and in what way)?
If you asked Jackson this question about me, he’d say that my face always betrays me. I try to hide my feelings, I prefer to internalise things than verbalise them. I wasn’t always this way, but life does that. Changes you.
5. Who or what, if anything, would you die for (or otherwise go to extremes for)?
I wanted to die in my place of my parents. If I could have swapped places, I would have. Is that crazy? Now, I realize I survived for a reason. Now I have Jackson and he is everything to me… would I risk my life for him? Probably.

Braiden Donohue

1. Have you ever been in love? If so, describe what happened.
You’re kidding me, right? This is some kind of joke? I’m not looking for that shit.
2. Who would you turn to if you were in desperate need of help?
It used to be my old man or Jackson, but look how well that ended for me.
3. Do you trust anyone to protect you? Who, and why?
Not anymore. Now I take care of me, myself, and I. Family is overrated anyway.
4. Who is the person you despise the most, and why?
I don’t think we have time to cover that. It grows daily, if you know what I’m saying. Right now, at the top of my shit list is Daddy dearest and that &*%&@ I used to call my best friend and brother.
5. Do you care what others think of you?
Seriously, do I look like I give a shit?

We Will Always Have the Closet by Natalina Reis

Petra Galatas sees the world through rose-colored glasses…
Petra has always chosen to see the best in people. Even her ex-husband’s extramarital affairs couldn’t destroy her faith in humanity. However, as much as she craves love, she’s not ready to trust another man with her heart.
The last place Petra thought she’d meet a guy was a closet in her ex-husband’s house…
While investigating Jonas Linden for millions of dollars in art fraud, Sam Corra’s clues lead him into the most unlikely of places—Jonas’ closet. Even less likely was meeting a woman there…a beautiful woman with honey skin and big brown eyes. Though neither of them divulge the reason they’re there, there’s an instant mutual attraction. And when Sam pursues her, he discovers the beautiful woman is none other than Jonas Linden’s ex-wife.
He’s on a mission to prove Jonas’ guilt. She’s determined to prove his innocence…
Unwilling to believe she had been stupid enough to marry a criminal, Petra attempts an investigation of her own, and unwittingly puts herself—and Sam—in danger. First comes an “accident” that lands Petra in the hospital. Second is a kidnapping that puts Sam’s life in grave danger.

When they both become pawns in a deadly game, money, art, and love are all at stake.

“Hmph.” She felt herself bump into someone. Her first instinct was to run out, but her common sense dictated she stay put. If she left the closet, Jonas would catch her red-handed, and she was not going to give him the satisfaction. It was pitch dark in the oddly small closet and she couldn’t see who was behind her, but she could feel his hard body crushed against hers, his muscle tight against her softness.
Unsettled, she wiggled in vain, trying to put some space between them. The empty hangers swung by her head and she reached up to stop the ensuing rattle. Who made such a tiny closet?
Strong hands spun her around until she was facing the stranger.
“Don’t say anything,” the male voice whispered in her ear. His warm breath on the side of her face sent an irrational shiver of pleasure through her. Her forever curious hands, caught between their bodies, moved of their own accord to explore the stranger’s sculptural hard muscles in unabashed awe.

“Get a grip, you idiot,” she chided herself in a soft, but audible voice.
Natalina wrote her first romance in collaboration with her best friend at the age of 13. Since then she has ventured into other genres, but romance is first and foremost in almost everything she writes.

After earning a degree in tourism and foreign languages, she worked as a tourist guide in her native Portugal for a short time before moving to the United States. She lived in three continents and a few islands, and her knack for languages and linguistics led her to a master’s degree in education. She lives in Virginia where she has taught English as a Second Language to elementary school children for more years than she cares to admit.
Natalina doesn’t believe you can have too many books or too much coffee. Art and dance make her happy and she is pretty sure she could survive on lobster and bananas alone. When she is not writing or stressing over lesson plans, she shares her life with her husband and two sons.

What Was Mine by Helen Klein Ross

During Baby Bingo, one of the guests en route to the bathroom mistakenly opened the door to the nursery and soon the entire party was gathered at its threshold, faces agog, silent, and I saw myself as they did: a woman stocking up for a baby I’d never have. For the first time, I realized, as they did, as Warren had tried to convince me—I wasn’t ever going to have a baby. I just wasn’t.

25111142One of the most devastating realities that a woman can face, has come to life in this novel. Ross’ story lays out the perfect husband and wife, right before your eyes—with one imperfection, the inability to conceive a child. Several marriages fail because both individuals thrive for what they don’t have—failure becomes a manifestation with the power of crippling the mind and tipping the hormonal balance. This story is gripping, emotional and psychologically intrepid. By delving into the minds and personalities of the characters as they live out their life, Ross engages the reader with exceptional persistence and creativity that are absolutely riveting.

Lucy is a married woman who doesn’t think about consequences, not at first—until becoming pregnant. Upon revelation, she is hesitant about what is growing inside of her. She has a new career, financial instability and a thriving marriage that is not yet ready to move on to a new chapter. All of these reasons come crashing down and begin to weigh on Lucy—she feels that the time is just not right and she must make a choice. After deciding to abort the baby, Lucy understands that she will be unable to part with it if she waits until birth to give the baby up for adoption. As if Lucy willed for another way, she is overcome with emotional distraught and relief when she has a miscarriage. She prays for the baby to come back in a few years when they are ready. After years pass and various failed attempts burden both Lucy and her husband, the emotional turmoil has grown to insurmountable discomfort—a discomfort that pushes him away. Lucy becomes withdrawn, unattached, unforgiving and essentially a shell of herself—until one day in a huge furniture store, she is drawn to a four-month-old baby alone in a cart. Though this thought process is highly irrational, Lucy feels justified, suddenly thinking that this is the baby that she had prayed for—that this is the one she had asked to come back into her life.
Lucy’s character, becoming withdrawn and systematic, points toward Post-Traumatic Stress. She weeps for the baby that she had lost, the baby that she would never give birth to. As everything begins shutting down, it is apparent that Lucy is not capable of criminal activity—much less kidnapping an innocent child. The way that she carries herself and her distraught sense of logic are signs of mental illness, but her composure and commonality is what deters those around her from seeing a clear picture of what could have actually transpired.
The author does a superb job with character development and credibility. As this story unfolds, so many factors come to play into these character’s lives. It is not difficult to sympathize with the victim in stories such as this, but even more striking than that—it is also not difficult to sympathize with the kidnapper. With such emotional conflict, making practicality and reason confusing at best—Ross has a compelling novel that will leave readers with awe. If you are a reader of women’s fiction or literary fiction, you may want to pick this up—but, fair warning…it may not be easy to put down.

I manage to make only a couple of steps when Ryan catches me around the elbow and turns me to face him. I don’t even have time to react when he crushes me to him, lifts my face to his, and kisses me hard.

Ryan kisses me like he’s never kissed me before. With desperation, as if he’d die if he stops. His lips and tongue are demanding, hungry, almost bruising. It’s not the tentative, reclaiming kiss I expected us to have after so many months apart. No. This is a devouring, claiming, and merciless kiss. It’s an I-hate-seeing-other-men-touch-you, why-are-you-fighting-us, every-second-without-you-is-torture kiss.

Feeling fire running through my veins, I bring my hands up to cup his jaw and kiss him back with everything I am. Even if I’m not ready to admit it, being without Ryan has been an insufferable anguish for me too. No matter how hard I try to deny it, my heart still wants him with every beat it takes.

I don’t even care that we’re making a scene when my hands roam over his hard body, grabbing and squeezing.

When our lips finally part, we stare at each other, his breaths as labored as my own. I swallow. Neither of us moves as tension zings between us.

Shit, what have I done?

In a poor attempt at protecting my heart, I take a step away from Ryan and murmur, “You shouldn’t have done that.”

His jaw clenches and his eyes fill with a rush of remorse.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t … God, I’m such a fucking asshole. I’m really sorry.”

No, I didn’t mean that. I want you to do it again. No. I don’t.

God, I’m a mess.

“It’s okay. I mean … I did kiss you back. I…” My stammering will cost me.

His expression suddenly relaxes and a bit of a triumph flashes in his eyes. “You did.”

He cups my cheek, his thumb tracing the line of my jaw. “Let me chase away all your fears about us. Let me kiss all the scars I left on your heart.”

He’s so earnest in his plea.

“Ryan …” I whisper, feeling the walls I’ve built to protect myself crack with his every word. And his expression. God, I’m drowning in the depths of the emotions pouring out of his green eyes.

“Being apart from you, thinking I’d never hold you like this again has been hell.”

Holy, sweet Lord. What is he doing to me?

Radiating agony streams from him. “Never again I’ll make a choice for you or demean your opinion. I promise to always respect your wishes and your freedom to make decisions for yourself. No matter how strong my feelings for you are, it doesn’t give me the right to decide for you.” He pauses and gathers a deep breath. “It took me a long time to realize we have nothing without trust. I know that now. I’ll never make the same mistake again, Liz. Let me make good on every broken promise. Let me dry every precious tear you shed for me.”

He leans down, his lips hovering over mine, and whispers across my mouth. “Elizabeth, please, forgive me.”

His plea wraps around my heart and squeezes, taking my breath away. I push back the tears.

God, I dreamed about this moment for so long. Now it’s here, and I’m stunned and lost.

Before I can form a coherent thought, his lips are on mine again. This kiss is different. It’s loving and slow and begs for forgiveness. And it ends too soon.

“I know your friends are waiting for you. Call me when you’re ready for me to be in your life again. I’ll be waiting. No matter how long it takes.”

Wait. What?

My emotions choke me as I watch Ryan walk down the hall and away from me. He disappears from view, leaving me in such a state that I can hardly string two cohesive thoughts together.

Who does that? Who leaves like that? Asshole.

He was right to leave. His presence, his kisses and touches make me defenseless. I promised myself not to be so easily dazzled again, yet here I am trembling with lips swollen from his kisses. My heart thuds uncontrollably in my chest, and the urge to run after him chokes me.

I draw in a deep, steadying breath.

There are two options here. I can ask him to leave my life for good or take a leap of faith and try to make this work between us.

What do I do?
