About Killer Instinct:
Killer Instinct 1.99 (1)
She’s not evil, but she has certain… urges.

Lane is a typical teenager. Loving family. Good grades. Afterschool job at the local animal hospital. Martial arts enthusiast. But her secret obsession is studying serial killers. She understands them, knows what makes them tick.

Because she might be one herself.

Lane channels her dark impulses by hunting criminals—delivering justice when the law fails. The vigilantism stops shy of murder. But with each visceral rush the line of self-control blurs.

And then a young preschool teacher goes missing. Only to return… in parts.

When Lane excitedly gets involved in the hunt for “the Decapitator,” the vicious serial murderer that has come to her hometown, she gets dangerously caught up in a web of lies about her birth dad and her own dark past. And once the Decapitator contacts Lane directly, Lane knows she is no longer invisible or safe. Now she needs to use her unique talents to find the true killer’s identity before she—or someone she loves—becomes the next victim…

KI New Look

Exclusive Excerpt:

I study serial killers. They’re loners. Obsessive compulsives. People who lack emotion and fantasize violence. Intelligent people who on the outside seem normal.

Interesting thing is, I am those profiles. I have urges. I plot ways to violently make people pay for what they’ve done to others.

Nature versus nurture. Of course I’ve studied that. I’ve got good parents with decent genetics so for me I’ve always suspected it’s something else. Except . . . I have no clue what.

I don’t know why I am the way I am, why I think the way I think, why I do the things I do. All I know is that I’m different. Always have been. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know something was off in me.

At ten, when other kids were coloring with crayons, I started tracking serial killers and keeping details of their murders in a journal—a journal no one has ever seen but me.

Now, seven years later, most teens hang out with friends. I, however, prefer spending my spare time at the court house—with Judge Penn to be exact. He tries all the hard cases.

His staff expects to see me, believing my lie about wanting to go into law, and so I give my customary nod as I enter the back of Penn’s court and quietly take my usual spot in the left rear corner. I sit down and get out my summer reading just in case today’s log is boring.

It’s not.

A balding, short, pudgy, accountant type man sits beside a slick lawyer he’s obviously spent a lot of money on. The Weasel is what I decide to name him.

In the viewing gallery sit a handful of women, three are crying and two stoically stare straight ahead.

On the stand is another one of the expressionless ones and she’s speaking, “. . . classical music, a candle. He knew his way around, like he’d been in my house before. He handcuffed my ankles and wrists to the bed posts and stuffed gauze in my mouth so my screams couldn’t be heard. He cut my clothes away and left me naked. He wore a condom and was clean shaven, everywhere. He had a full face mask on.”

No evidence.

“He raped me,” she matter-of-factly reports and then describes in detail all the vicious ways he violated her.

“I’m going to be sick,” the woman in front of me whispers before getting up and leaving the room.

I continue listening to the details, mentally cataloging them. Details don’t bother me. They don’t make me sick. They don’t make me want to leave a room. If anything they draw me in because they are just that—details, facts.

A few of the women in the room sniffle and I glance to The Weasel. Although he’s doing a good job of keeping his emotions blank, I catch a slight smirk on his lips that kicks my pulse.

This is one of the things I consider a talent of mine. While some people show every emotion, I show none. And I can read others’ body language, others’ faces when they think they’re doing a stellar job of masking. The Weasel obviously thinks he’s getting away with something.

Thirty minutes later The Weasel is found not guilty due to lack of evidence. As he walks from the court room, his slight smirk becomes more visible when he glances at one of the sniffling women.

This is another thing people make the mistake of—confidence, cockiness, ego.

The Weasel will rape again. Of this I’m sure.

If it is my destiny to be a killer, I’m going to need a type. And today decides that my type will be criminals—specifically, those that have managed to avoid punishment.

I turn seventeen next week. The Weasel will be my birthday present to myself. I think I’ve just found my first victim.

“Daughter, forgive me, but I must ask you again; are you sure, are you completely sure this is what you want? You haven’t seen him yet, you haven’t spoken with him. I have to tell you, he is not the man you remember, no matter what his letters suggested.” Lerric was sitting with Sofira on the bed in her luxuriously appointed chamber, autumn sunlight streaming through the window. Its warmth helped alleviate the horror he still felt after his earlier meeting with the creature Sofira had begged him to save. The king held fast to his daughter’s hands, mainly to disguise the tremble of his own, but also to convey his intense unease. He looked earnestly into her hard gray eyes and willed her to hear his concern. Despite his fear, he was loath to reveal precisely what had taken roost in that fetid cell far beneath the palace floors. Sofira stared back at him, hearing his care for her, seeing his distress. But it seemed she could not understand his concern, for her brittle eyes glazed with tears. “Don’t you want me to have back what was taken from me, Father?” Her colorless face was animated with hurt. “You know how unhappy I’ve been since I was forced to return here. You know how I ache for my children.” Lerric nodded. “I know it’s been hard for you. At least at the castle Elias allowed you access to them—” “Access?” Sofira snarled. “What use is access to me? Never allowed to be alone with them, never to take them out of my prison, never to walk in the park with them? He doled out time with them as if giving tidbits to a dog, and kept me kenneled like one, too. And I a Queen! How could you condone that?” Lerric thought better of reminding his daughter she had ceased to be a queen when Elias dissolved their marriage. And in light of what she had done—misled by Reen or not, she couldn’t pretend ignorance of the risks she had run—Lerric considered her fortunate not to have suffered the death penalty. Not that he could tell her that, either. He spoke soothingly. “I didn’t say I condoned it, daughter, and you know I never wanted to see you separated from Eadan and Seline. It’s just that . . . Sofira, are you absolutely convinced Hezra is sane?”
Sofira froze. She stared at her father, a biting retort on her lips. But then she realized he was only trying to protect her, clumsy though he was. She relaxed her spine and smiled. “Oh, Father, of course I’m sure. Do you think I wouldn’t know if something had affected his mind? It’s a clever ruse, a ploy he’s devised to make them relax their vigilance. Didn’t you read his letters? Didn’t you feel the sincerity in his words, his deep desire to restore all I’ve lost? And don’t forget, my restoration will also benefit you. You’ll be more than recompensed for your trouble and the support you continue to give us. We’ll not forget you or Bordenn when I am once again Albia’s High Queen.” Lerric doubted that. He had seen the light of fanaticism in the scarecrow’s eyes, the driving desire to control, the fervid lust for revenge at any cost. Reen might be willing to accept the title of consort for now, but Lerric would not bet much on him being happy with a supporting role for long, not once the reins of power were in his hands. Sofira was clearly already under his spell. He had cunningly charmed her from within his prison, writing her words of contrition, loyalty, and love. In her beleaguered state of angry, lonely sorrow, brought on by the conditions Elias had imposed on her, she had been easy prey. Lerric shivered. Why should that word—prey—cause his heart to constrict? Why did it conjure images of ragged carrion birds feasting on a corpse?

But as stubborn as Caroline is, she minimizes the emotions James has awakened in her, and it takes almost losing him to admit her true feelings.

AN UNEXPECTED PROPOSAL was introduced in the first volume of the bestselling and award-winning Timeless Romance Anthology series, WINTER COLLECTION:

**Amazon #1 Bestselling *New Release* in Clean Romance

**Amazon Top 10 in Regency Romance

**Amazon Top 5 in Victorian Romance

About the Author (Christmas Blitz)

Annette Lyon is the Whitney Award-winner author of Band of Sisters and a three-time recipient of Utah’s Best of State Medal for fiction, twice for novels and a third time for her novellas. She has received many publication awards from the League of Utah Writers, including the Silver Quill for her first book in the Newport Ladies Book Club series, Paige. She’s published more than a dozen novels, even more novellas, several nonfiction books, and over 120 magazine articles, and she has a cum laude BA in English from BYU. When she’s not writing, knitting, or eating chocolate, she can be found mothering and avoiding the spots on the kitchen floor.

Q and A with the Author:

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
The credit goes to two people: Beverly Cleary (my first attempts at writing were about rodents not unlike Ralph S. Mouse), and my older sister Mel, who was in sixth grade and oh-so-cool. She started writing stories, so of course, writing had to be cool, and I started to. I was about eight years old and have known ever since then that I wanted to be a writer. (All of these years later, my older sister is also a writer; she’s about to finish her MFA in creative nonfiction.)
Give us an insight into how your writing day/time is structured?

When my children were very young, I wrote in snatches of time—fifteen minutes here, half an hour during nap time, and so on. I got very good at thinking ahead to what I’d write when the opportunity presented itself, and then when I found myself in the dance studio lobby for 45 minutes during my daughter’s class, I’d whip out 1500 words as fast as I could. They’re older now, so my schedule is more flexible, but somehow, finding time is still hard. One thing has always stayed the same, however: I cannot write well in the early morning; my brain just refuses to work then. I’m most creative and able to focus after noon and sometimes late in the evening when the house is quiet.

Book Information (Christmas Blitz)

Maura finally found the truth she was always seeking…or has she?

After being left in the dark for all of her life, Maura’s father, Maxwell, has finally returned to reveal sinister family secrets Maura could never have dreamed possible—including his revelation that she is one of The Born. But his daughter soon discovers both he and her mother are keeping pieces of her reality hidden, still. As Maura struggles to unravel the mysteries surrounding her new existence and discover every piece of the cryptic puzzle, life appears intent on casting stumbling blocks across her path with every step forward.

Tragedy seems to stalk Maura, and those around her, as she stumbles along, altering the young changeling’s family, just when they have all come back together. The changes left in its wake could be for the better, or may threaten their existence, entirely.

With the arrival of Christmas comes the opportunity for Maura to draw close to everyone she loves—and finally reunite with Ron, the man she loves. But permanence has always eluded her, and in her current state of flux this pattern endures, as fate seems intent on snapping the threads that bind her to those she holds most dear. Maxwell’s good intentions pave a road for Maura, littered with misery, while her mother, Caelyn’s, desire to shield her family from pain may tear her away from them, altogether. The perfect happiness in the young vampire’s grasp is so easily swept away and dragged under, out of reach. Can Maura erupt from the darkness and confusion to break the surface and find the life she’s always dreamed of?

In the midst of chaos, assistance materializes in the form of another of her kind—ephemerally beautiful, yet explosively volatile, this new vampire may prove capable of unlocking the puzzle-box Maxwell seems intent on securing from her sight. Maura will discover the darkest parts of herself in her quest to understand the being she is destined to become. Her newfound friend has some shady intentions of his own—such as thwarting the love that has grown between Maura and Ron. Following in the wake of the impulsive vampire’s misguided instruction may further pull a naive Maura down into the depths of ultimate despair, heartbreak…and even destruction.

Time For a snippet!

My hand came to rest on Ron’s chest as I tried to steady myself and his heartbeat pulsed against my palm—electrifying, as if a wire had connected the two—and I realized the beating inside my head mirrored the same inside his chest.  His heartbeat resonated in my ears, silencing the rest of the world.  Ron’s mouth moved, speaking words, but his heart drowned those out, too.

“Shhhhhh…” I bent to kiss him and devour any words of protest.  There was a pulse in his full, perfect lower lip that kept time against my own.  He lay very still now, so I pushed myself up enough to look in his face.  It was red…everything my sight beheld was tinged scarlet, so I shut my eyes against it.  I could hear a small tearing sound, as if there was a microscopic person inside my head ripping paper—crek…crek…crek.   My canines ached like they were being ripped from their sockets.  If I could just sink them into his flesh, it would take away all the pain…

Taming the Whirlwind by L.M. Heidle

Liz is slowly accomplishing her goals:

Get out of her small town- CHECK
Graduate College- CHECK
Move to New York- CHECK
Get a job- working on it
Find drama- WAIT! NO!
Finding drama was NOT on her to-do list, but apparently life didn’t get the memo, because it threw her one heck of a curveball. What curveball you ask? It’s not a what, but a who and that who would be Mr. Kade Ian Parker. The tattooed, short-tempered, sexier than should be allowed businessman, has turned her world more than upside down. He obliterated it. Her life has turned into something that even a soap opera writer couldn’t come up with.
Kade never wanted to find love. He saw how his family crumbled after his mom left; there was no way he was going to be crushed by another woman. No one had come close to making him want more, until her. No matter how hard he fought his attraction and oh did he try. Hell, he basically pushed her into another man’s arms, nothing changed.  He. Still. Wanted. Her.

About the Author (Christmas Blitz)

Kimberly Krey specializes in writing “romance that’s clean without losing the steam!”   She’s a reader of good, clean romance, a lover of family time and Diet Coke, and the ultimate hater of laundry. She discovered her love for writing in college when given a creative writing assignment. She still remembers sitting in the lamplight’s glow, crafting words to depict the vision in her head. That assignment sparked a passion within her. It took years to return to that passion, but now that she has, she counts it among her greatest blessings.

Krey is author of the top-selling Sweet Montana Bride series, as well as its companion series, Second Chances.

Q and A With the Author:

1-  Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Yes. It’s about learning to love yourself despite your imperfections. (And others despite theirs, as well.)

2-   Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

Each book I write gives me a new insight into the different perspectives of each of my characters. This one reminded me of how important it is to be sensitive to others; we never know what they’re struggling with.

“Ooh, ho, ho! Looks like someone’s standing beneath the mistletoe,” Mike yells from clear down the hall. I glance up and see a small cluster of red and green hovering right over our heads. That must mean we’re next to the – I look to my left for confirmation; yes – the trophy case. My heart bursts into an uncontrollable spasm. My legs feel weak and jelly-like.
Several of the students have already filtered out to their busses or cars in the wet, miserable slush. But am here, warm and dry, standing beneath a dangling sprig of mistletoe with none other than Kole Kingston before me.
I have mentally cursed the neighbor kid who keeps hanging the mistletoe next to the trophy case. I have shot daggers out of my eyes at him for having to witness all the couples who’ve stopped to make-out between classes. But first she must convince her overprotective family that leaving their home and fighting an evil bigger than Zombies is the right thing to do. Except they don’t want to listen.

Until the fight follows them home. Until it destroys every semblance of peace and illusion of security they’ve worked so hard for.

They’re not safe anymore.

And until they kill Matthias Allen, Zombies are the least of their problems.

5 amazing authors from 5 Prince Publishing have come together to make this wonderful Anthology. Let’s get to know them.

Romance author by night, pharmacist by day, Amy Gale loves rock music
and the feel of sand between her toes.  She attended Wilkes University
where she graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. In addition to

Bernadette Marie has been an avid writer since the early age of 13,

In 2007 – after marriage, filling her chronic entrepreneurial
needs, and having five children – Bernadette began to write
seriously with the goal of being published.  That year she wrote 12
books.  In 2009  she was contracted for her first trilogy and the
published author was born.  In 2011 she (being the entrepreneur that
she is) opened her own publishing house, 5 Prince Publishing, and
has released contemporary titles and has begun the process of taking

Extras (Christmas Blitz)

Let’s get to know one of the authors and their story!
Author Q&A
1. What is your favorite part of writing?

My favorite part of writing is leaving behind the stress and day to day
life of the real world and transporting to somewhere amazing where
someone is just about to fall in love.

2. Is there a message in your novels you want readers to grasp?
The message in my writing I
want my readers to grasp is to never give up on your dreams and anything
is possible with someone you love by your side.
3.Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I’ve always loved to write
but didn’t have the time to devote to writing during college. After I
started working in the real world, I fell in love with the New Adult
romance genre and once I read just about every book available at the
time I decided to write my own. I shared my story with a few close
friends who encouraged me to go for it! Two years and three books later,
here I am.
4.Give us an insight to how your writing day/time is structured.
I write in the evening when I
am the only person home and not a creature is stirring except for my
six cats and Golden Retriever. I like to leave the world behind and dive
into my story.
5. Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
I learned that writing the
book is the easiest part. I didn’t realize how much time and effort
needs to go into promoting and marketing. Now I schedule time for both.
6. What is the thing you struggle with the most while writing and how do you defeat it?
The thing I struggle with the
most while writing is time management. I work full-time so it’s
pertinent to schedule writing time. Sometimes the voices in my head
demand to be heard even when it’s 3 a.m. and I’ve got to get up for work. I love it though.

I blink, trying to focus my blurry vision.
Amazing, just when I think he can’t get any sexier, he goes and does this. Nick
flings a guitar strap over his shoulder and joins the local band up on
stage.  “Give it up for our own football
star, Nick Shaw,” the lead singer says into the microphone. A roar of clapping
fills the air. I sway from side to side, steadying myself against the back of
the chair. I take a sip of my third martini. “For those of you don’t know, Nick
used to be the guitar player of Steel Asylum back in the day.” The singer runs
a hand through his hair and nods to the other members.
Hoots and hollers fill the bar.  Beautiful, familiar chords flow through. The
crowd breaks into a frenzy. I close my eyes, taking in the melodic tones. Even
in my altered state, it hits me. Oh my God, they’re going to attempt “Stairway
to Heaven”? I gaze at the stage, following Nick’s every move. His fingers glide
along the strings effortlessly. Like everything he touches turns into pure
magic. The lights shine down, glowing all around him, turning him into an
angel.  My eyes lock onto him, refusing
to take in anything else. The singer belts out the lyrics, trying to capture
Robert Plant’s essence. Of course it’s not even close to perfect, but it’s fun.
Maybe that’s the point. Nick’s fingers tap along the strings. His forearm
muscles dance along the rolled-up sleeves of his gray dress shirt. What is it
about musicians and athletes that drives me wild? And the combination, that’s
just like an atomic bomb about to go off. Willpower, where are you? I chair
dance to the final chorus, Nick still in my crosshairs. The lights dim, casting
a blue glow over the small stage. Nick slides his fingers along the strings.
Perfect finish. The crowd cheers, giving a standing ovation. Nick tosses the
guitar strap back over his head and sets the Les Paul Starburst down. If he
carried that in one hand and a football in the other, no doubt he’d get mauled
to death with every step. The foursome of bandmates and Nick walk to the front
of the stage and take a quick bow. “Don’t even think of going anywhere. We’ll
be back after a quick break. Here’s more Zeppelin to rock your world.” The lead
singer steps away from the mic and switches to a CD.  Nick slides into the chair at our table.
“What’s the verdict?”

Is he for real? He
turned from hot football player to smoldering rock god in a matter of five
minutes. I’d say the jury’s unanimous. “I didn’t know you had a secret talent.”
He leans forward across the table. “More where that came from.” He sits back in
his chair. I sip my drink. “Maybe it’s time I learn some of them.” Wait, did
that just slip out of my mouth? I set down my glass. Enough of the liquid
confidence. Or is it truth serum?  He
raises an eyebrow, flashing a quick smile. “You know, I’ve never met anyone
like you.” “I guess you don’t get out much.” He sips his beer. “Seriously,
you’re… real.”  I slug down the rest of
my martini. “There’s nothing worse than being surrounded by fake smiles and judging
eyes. I can relate.” He shakes his head. “It’s not that. You’re focused but can
still see the whole picture. A sweetheart but not a pushover. And you never let
your guard down, even when you should.” “That’s how you end up getting hurt.”
He slides his hand across the table, running his thumb along my fingers. “Or
it’s how you find something amazing. It’s all about taking a risk, and I’d risk
anything to be with you right now.”
