Snippets

Those in the know called her The Spy. The M.O. of Helen Miller in support of her children’s soccer endeavors in Valley Mirage was cunning. A slim, nondescript woman, she lurked the opposing sideline hoping to pick up actionable intelligence—No. 10, the star player, would be leaving at halftime to attend a family wedding, No. 3 had complained to his mom about a hurting right leg—that she could report back to her coach. In the course of a single match she might move back and forth a half-dozen times, almost like she had a bladder problem but couldn’t find the restroom.
Then there was the fellow known as The Optometrist. Not because he was a trained medical practitioner, which he wasn’t. And not because he wore glasses, although he did—big thick ones that resembled the bottom of old-fashioned Coca-Cola bottles. No, Harvey Richter was called The Optometrist because of his
one constant refrain standing on the sidelines watching his kids play. “Ref, are you blind?” he shouted after almost every adverse call, which meant he did a lot of shouting. “Ref, are you blind?”

Q and A with the Author

Is there a message you would like readers to get out of this book? What is it?
I want my readers to travel to the 19th century and visit a world where there were candles instead of light bulbs, hearths instead of radiators, people told stories and read aloud instead of watching TV, they wrote long letters instead of phoning or texting, and carted water from wells instead of using taps/faucets! A five mile trip was an adventure, and a sea journey was like a space odyssey. Magic flickered in every shadow, every full moon disclosed a secret, and seeing a lady’s ankle or wrist was sensual and forbidden. A simple infection or a pregnancy could mean death, and periodic fatal epidemics were expected. There was plenty of raw passion and adventure, because every minute was precious and every feeling authentic. I’d also like my readers to feel curious enough to want to read or reread 19th century authors, such as the Brontes and Dickens, who are the real masters of the novel.

Could Maura’s life get any worse? …turns out it most certainly can.

1

Isolated and sheltered by her lonely mother, Maura’s never been able to make friends. She seems to drive her classmates away—except for the odd times they pay enough attention to torture her—but she doesn’t understand why. Maura considers herself to be a freak of nature, with her unusually pale skin and an aversion to the sun that renders her violently nauseous. Her belief is only worsened by the fact that almost everyone around her keeps their distance.

Even her own father deserted her before she was born, leaving Maura alone with her emotionally distant mother, Caelyn. Even though Maura is desperate for answers about her unknown parent, Caelyn remains heartbroken and her daughter can’t bring herself to reopen her mother’s wounds. Or is there a more sinister reason Caelyn refuses to utter a word about her long-lost love?

When a cruel prank nearly claims Maura’s life, one of her classmates, Ron, rushes to her rescue. Darkly handsome & mysteriously accepting, Ron doesn’t seem to want to stay away, but Maura is reluctant to get too close, since her mother has announced she’s moving the two of them to Vancouver…nearly 3,000 miles away from their hometown of Indiana, Pennsylvania.

If life wasn’t already challenging enough, Maura begins to experience bizarre, physical changes her mother seems hell bent on ignoring, compelling Maura to fear for her own life. Vicious nightmares, blood cravings, failing health and the heart-shattering loss of Ron—as well as the discovery of a tangled web of her own mother’s lies—become obstacles in Maura’s desperate quest for the unfathomable truth she was never prepared to uncover.

Here are so fun interview questions!
When did you know you wanted to write books?
From about age five. I would always narrate things in my brain—all the things around me. I used to make up stories about people I’d see all the time. I even wrote a continuing story for my dance class that the teacher would read at the beginning of class every week.

What does your writing process look like?

The past year I’ve been doing a lot of editing for other authors. But that has kept me from writing. I intend for next year to be spent, predominantly, writing. It’s very sporadic right now, whenever I can fit it in, but I want it to become more of a fixed schedule. I like to write with music on or a horror movie on in the background, and also watching my bunbabies at play.

 Author Top 10 Fun Facts

I have four house bunnies, who are spoiled to death. They have their own room, filled with toys, off the living room. Tegan, Pepper, Butters & Beckett.

In college, I lived in a haunted house. The ghost would turn the light on (light bulb with a chain) in the front closet
every night at 9:00 PM. No one would ever believe me until they saw it. It moved other things around too in a non-harmful way.

When I was little, I was obsessed with Dinosaurs and used to have this little plastic set I played with all the time.

Eating gluten makes my Rheumatoid Arthritis go crazy, so I make all my cookies, cake and pizza dough with nut flours and can make pretty much anything you could make out of regular flour. Believe me when I say diet is what controls disease. I laughed at my naturopath when she first told me this, but then had to admit how wrong I was.

My favorite colors are red and black…together. I don’t have a single favorite, must be those two together. I try to make as much of my wardrobe as possible in these colors.

In college, I was in every club the English department had and between them and studying, had no free time. But they were nice enough my senior year to name an award after me, which they continued to give every year.

I wanted to write a book since the age of five, but once, I wrote a story for a Star Wars competition. My mother was so critical, I rewrote it (and the second one sucked), completely . I was nervous after that, and it took me six years to finish my first book, in large part because of that incident.

I can be competitive, especially when someone is mean to me. I took an idea to one of my English clubs in college for the upcoming alcohol-free mix off. One of the girls said it was stupid in a very snarky way, so I went to a different club. We did a whole Death’s Angst theme and even wrote a poem about how Death felt cheated, since no one was driving drunk that night. We had a little graveyard with names on the stones like, “Danny Drovedrunk.” We took Best of Show with the huge trophy, and the college kept our poem to use at future mix offs, since we’d followed the message they were trying to get across so well.

It’s my dream to move to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territories in Canada. I moved to Ontario from Vancouver when I met my husband and hate living here. I regret leaving the beauty of the west behind and hope next year to be living in this place, which is so beautiful and offers so much more opportunity. I think it would offer so much more writing inspiration too. Northern Lights are one thing I haven’t experienced yet that I’m dying to see in person. Plus, I love snow, so it’s a win-win.

I was a breech baby when I was born, and almost killed both myself and my mother at birth. The doctor let me go too far for surgery and she ended up being in labor for over 48 hours. Perhaps it was this early brush with near death that gave me such a love of the macabre.

Q and A with the Author

A lot of authors I have noticed have music as a way to help with their writing. Is this something that you have used as well? If not what are some things you have used?

I can’t work with music on. Some people think in images and visuals. I don’t. I hear my characters’ chatter, and music blocks it. It probably doesn’t help much that I’m the girl who has to sing along at the top of her lungs, which isn’t really great for concentrating on other things. When I start writing, if nothing interrupts me, I don’t need much help. I get lost for hours. My kids come home from school and I’m sitting there, braless with my teeth not brushed, because I sat to jot down that one little idea and never got up. Or I’ll be starving at 4 pm and then realize that I never stopped for lunch. I’m a little like the absent-minded professor once I get going.

Here are some fun author interview questions!
When did you know you wanted to write books?
I read a series of books about seven years ago that immersed me in their world so completely that I wanted to know
how the author did that. So I started researching and writing.
What does your writing process look like?
I come up with a hero, a heroine, three disasters, and an ending. I use the disasters as markers along the way and discovery write the story and characters. I’m a putter-inner. I cycle back through my story adding layers. Usually dialogue comes first, then I cycle back and add in the staging, then the emotion. I do all this as I write the story so that when I’m finished I have a pretty good story. Then I do one more pass adjusting all the details for consistency. Then I read again for typos and send it out to a few trusted readers. I make the changes they suggest, get it proofread and publish it.

I generally come up with an idea, discuss it with my husband over 5 or 10 walks through the neighborhood. Once my idea is solid, I use Martha Alderson’s Plot Whisperer book to detail out and plot my novels. I then sit down and flesh out the story. Once the story is done, I send it to my editor for story line and content edits. This is when I either have to rewrite the entire story, or can get by with some minor chapter changes. Once we have a solid story we move on to grammar and line edits. It generally takes 2 or 3 rounds to get through these. Once grammar and line edits are done I lay out the book and then we do the final copy edit.

10 Random and Possibly Funny Facts About Ayr
I wrote my first novel in 2007 while on bed rest for seven months during the pregnancy of my second son.
Pompous Schemes is my 13th story published under the name of Ayr Bray, but my 14thpublished story.
I eat a 26.5 oz jar of Nutella spoonful by spoonful for every 35,000 words I write.
I love to learn, but I hated high school and college. If I could go back and do it all over again, I would graduate HS early get my degree online. Unfortunately those were not options back when I graduated. Also, I should have taken classes I enjoyed rather than those that seemed practical for an economic future. Now, I have a degree which is completely useless since I’m writing books full-time.
Pink is my favorite color.
I love to sail.
I hate … no, no, no, despise to cook and eat (other than Nutella). If I could just take a vitamin to get all of the nutrients and calories I needed to survive healthily and never have to cook or eat again I would buy it in a heartbeat. I would even be willing to give up Nutella, which is what I practically live on now.
I get remarkably little sleep because my mind is always busy with thoughts of new stories. I have 7 novels outlined and just sitting in a file waiting for me to finish them up.
I have been married to my own Mr. Darcy for 16 wonderful years. My Mr. Darcy and I have two awesome sons ages 10 and 8 who sometimes drive me crazy.
I love to travel. I sold my home and everything I own in 2012 and now I live and travel the USA with my husband and two sons in 240 square feet. I lived in 13 houses in 11 cities in 12 years. Now, in the past 4 years I have lived in 1 house in hundreds of cities and 37 states.
BONUS: My new office is only 40 square feet, but it is 40 square feet of floor to ceiling pure awesome sauce!

Now for some fun Author interview Questions!

When did you know you wanted to write books?
When the Lord of the Rings movies were done and I
wanted to know more about the characters in the books. I invented lives,
communities and new exciting adventures for elves (elfs) dwarves and humans. Inspired
by but not a copy of Tolkien’s work.
What does your writing process look like?
I get this huge idea that doesn’t let me sleep until I
start writing it and the characters are happy where I am taking them. Usually
it comes all in the sequence that it happens.
