About the Author

Author

James Pinard is a writer of books, screenplays, graphic novels and poetry. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he currently resides in Orlando, FL where he works as a Computer Programmer for an insurance company. He has two beautiful, awesome children Michael and Ariel who inspired characters in his latest creation, “LAND OF THE LIVING.”

His past works include the short story “CREED” which was published in the PULP EMPIRE Collection Vol 1 and “DEARBORNE” in PULP EMPIRE Vol 2 by METAHUMAN PRESS available on Amazon. He is also a Writer and Creator of the Comic series “LUCID WORLD” Issues 1 and 2 published by TRAGIC ENTERTAINMENT.

“LAND OF THE LIVING” began as a labor of love on a subject matter that is close to his heart. One of his favorite subjects is time travel and his favorite decade is the eighties. After having lost both his parents and his sister to cancer, he decided to come up with a story about traveling to the 1980’s to see them again. The story just grew from there and the rest as we say is history.

Snippet Time!

May 23, 1985: the night that changed my
life forever.
I approached from the passenger side. She turned and saw me as I walked up to the door. She shot me a look with those beautiful dark eyes of hers. “Jim? What are you doing here?”
I glanced to the driver’s side and saw Tony wasn’t there. “I need you to come with me now.”
“What?”
“Come with me if you want to live.” It was a line from the Terminator movie and it was all I could think of at the time. It seemed to fit the occasion.
“What? What are you talking about?”
“Look. I really don’t have time to explain right now. I need you to come with me and I mean now!” I tried to be as forceful as I could but she looked at me as if I was crazy.
“Look, Jim, I don’t know what you’re doing here, but you need to leave now. Okay?”
I looked into the car and could see all the beer cans and the look on her face. She looked afraid. Was she afraid that night? Did she want to get away from him but couldn’t? Now I knew what I had to do. My whole attitude changed and I was ready for whatever happened at that point, and it’s a good thing because that was exactly when I needed to be ready.
“Hey! What’s up, Jim? What are you doing here?” I could hear Tony’s voice as he approached the car from behind me.
“I came for Sara.” I said, turning my head to see him as he walked up to the car from the other side.
“Is that what you want?” He said to Sara who didn’t respond.
“We’re on our way to buy some pot. If you got money, you can come with us.” Tony always had a friendly demeanor; he never bullied on the surface, but he always had an agenda and I knew what his was tonight.
He walked over to me with his large six-foot-two frame and curly black hair down to his shoulders, and in one swift movement, reality set in. That’s right; this wasn’t a dream. If it were, that gun that he had in his waistband underneath his leather jacket wouldn’t be there.
“And if you don’t have any money you can get the fuck out of here, Jimmy boy.”
“Jim, go home.” Sara shot me a look like she always did when she was mad at me. It was the evil eye with a frown and a stare.
So now was the moment of truth. If I made a move and Tony pulled his gun, this whole thing could go sideways in a hurry. I looked out the corner of my eye and saw a police cruiser pull into the parking lot. It was behind where Tony stood, so he couldn’t see it.
“Here’s what we’re going to do. I’m going to take Sara and we’re going to get out of here.” I said without emotion.
Tony Mason looked me dead in the eye. “I know what you’re thinking, Jimmy boy. You think because that cop just pulled in behind me… That’s right, I saw him… I’m going to let you go, but that’s not going to happen. Instead, what’s going to happen is this. I’m going to pull out this gun and shoot that cop. Then I’m going to shoot you.”
My jaw almost dropped when he said those words and just then, the cop pulled up alongside us in his police cruiser. Sara got out of the car and stood up next to Tony.
“Everybody okay over here?” The cop said leaning out his window. He had a young face, wearing a Newington PD uniform.
“I don’t know, officer. Is everybody okay over here?” Tony said with his back turned to the officer and his hand on his gun that was strategically placed in his waistband underneath his jacket.
“Yeah, we’re good.” I told the officer as I walked closer to Tony and patted him on the back.
“No problems here.” I repeated and looked down at the gun in Tony’s waistband. I thought about making a move at that gun, and he could see it in my eyes as I glanced at his face.

Excerpt:

“I should go,” she says. “Obviously you came down here for something, and I’m in your way.”
Talon steps in, catching her by the wrist, surprising both her and himself.
Both of their gazes skim to where their skin touches. A current that has nothing to do with magic or electricity passes between them. He releases her, his voice husky. “Sorry, I only wanted to catch your attention. You don’t have to leave. I can go.”
“No!” Her hands dart out. Then she smoothes over her hair once more. “I mean, you can stay, if you want.”
“And watch you dance?”
She chews her lip, tracing a foot over an invisible line in the tile. “You could dance with me, if you wanted.”

Whimper by Erin McFadden

Despite sweltering heat, Saturday night is in full swing at the local campus bars and cafes. Thumping techno bass competes against raucous voices and laughter until screams suddenly shatter the party atmosphere. A half-naked man charges through the crowd, savaging his peers. Zoe Clark witnesses the bloody attack and the unnatural behavior of the assailant and knows something horrible is happening in her quiet college town. Zoe opens her home and her heart to a mysterious newcomer who claims to have an explanation for the grisly attacks. Elliott Carter needs any help he can find as he struggles to discover a cure for the virus that can turn ordinary students into mindless, violent attackers. Attraction and dedication collide as the two are drawn into a high stakes race against a government gone awry and a menace invisible to the naked eye. As they fight to stop the spread of the deadly microbe, secrets and bloodshed threaten to destroy any hope they might hold for a happily ever after. When the world teeters on the brink of a deadly pandemic, how much will they sacrifice to save it?

***Warning for adult language and violence***
Amazon ~ B&N ~ Kobo
“You can only catch the virus through blood to blood contact, right?” Zoe asked, kind of out of the blue. “Not through saliva or anything like that?”
“Yeah, it has to be direct blood to blood transmission. Now, if two people both had bleeding cuts or sores in their mouths or something like that then it could pass along with the saliva but…” My oh-so-sexy description was cut short when Zoe pressed her lips to mine, wrapping her arms around my neck.
Oh God, this was going to complicate things so much, but I didn’t give a damn. It felt too good, too right. I groaned, losing myself in the kiss as I tangled a fist in Zoe’s hair, pulling her closer and trapping her between my body and the air mattress. We kissed hungrily, passion with a generous dash of desperation mixed in. When her hands slid under my shirt and traveled over my back and chest, I took it as an invitation to do the same. I rolled slightly to the side, pulling her with me so that I could reach the clasp of her bra strap under the soft dress that had already hiked up past her waist. Sighing with fascination, I ran my thumb over the silky smoothness of her breast and moved to kiss her lips again. She arched under me, and our mouths crashed together awkwardly, teeth clicking before we found the right rhythm. Zoe giggled, and then gasped when we both heard the front door open upstairs.
“Guess this will have to be postponed,” she sighed, swiping at her mouth with the back of her hand and attempting to rearrange her dress. Something about her hand caught my attention, and I reached out for her wrist as she struggled to re-latch her bra. A very slight red smear marred her pale skin, and all at once my nausea returned. With shaking hands, I touched my own lips to see if I was bleeding. Zoe blanched when she realized what was on her hand, touching her own face in concern.
“It’s mine! It’s not yours! It’s not your blood. I just nicked my lip a little on my tooth. I didn’t even notice it. It’s okay, Elliott!” she exclaimed, touching my face and shoulders, trying to draw a reaction from me. I’d gone blank, too focused on the maelstrom of thoughts and emotions raging inside my own skull to even respond to her. Slowly, I backed away and retreated to the freezer. My body temp hadn’t even started climbing, I simply needed space. I had to get…away. I had to get away from all of this.
I sat inside the freezer, not bothering to turn on a light. Zoe was the only thing that made me feel alive while I was busy dying. But humans are so damn fragile. What if I was the next to bleed? What if I killed her right along with the rest of the world? Surely that would send me straight to a special spot in hell. God damn it! As if I wasn’t in a special hell already.

Finding You by Candy O’Donnell

Candy O’Donnell lives in California. At the age of twelve, she wrote her first mini book, filled mostly with what took place with her mother and her long tedious bout with leukemia. It was a short story told as extra credit when she suffered a sprained ankle and had to be out of school for over two months. School officials refused to believe a word of what she had written until her grandmother, her guardian back then, entered the school with the truth. Everything she had written down was exactly what took place. Unfortunately, her mother succumbed to the disease. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history and culture. After living with her aunt and uncle for over five years, she wished to explore her uncle’s native heritage, and did so with vigor. She also has grad units in criminal justice.

 How does one discover happiness?

After long bouts of unhappiness, I discovered something buried within me. What I kept buried deep inside me was joy and happiness. At times I did not deeply love myself and others, I did not love with compassion, or see myself as one with others. Unhappiness stems from our pain and suffering, but we can let go of unhappiness. This journey is not easy and after digging through the pain and fear, I found happiness.

 WHAT IS YOUR PASSION?

The deeper we go into who we are, the easier it is to find our passion. A passion is
anything we love doing, celebrating, or hold near and dear to our heart. Do what you love. Your passion can be anything creative!

Let’s take a look into Finding Your Passion!
Passion can be found within all of us. It is that small or large area inside of us that begs to come out. It makes us happy, forgiving, and amazing people. When we finally give in to following our passion our bodies react joyfully. We finally decide to be a happy with not only our lives, but the lives of everyone around us. Not everyone will be able embrace their passion. Some work because they have to, and still others because the money is just too good to pass up. Be your passion, and move through it with ease and grace.
Passion can be found when we finally decide to walk through fear and pain and toss out what others are telling us to do with our lives. We should be able to walk our passion with love in our hearts. Our minds can focus on what we believe to be right.
Live life passionately and know that you are not alone on this journey. Many others are searching for their passion. When they find it, something clicks within them and they begin to change. With this change comes a calming of the mind and soul. Our souls begin to halt their restlessness and we begin to relax more.
Have you ever seen someone so content that the world just passes them by? It only happens when they are living their passion. If that is what you desire for yourself then let’s begin.

Dating Maggie by MJ Greenway

With her 25th birthday looming, Maggie Jennings makes herself a promise… She will get a boyfriend and an acting gig within the year or break-up with Tinsel Town for good!
She has a cool job as a movie studio guide, and Botoxed blondes and traffic jams have even started to grow on her. She’s using a new dating app and has a dating vlog—but she yearns for more.
Cliff Kincade is in L.A. for a wedding, but he’d much rather be back home at his Oregon ranch…
Still stinging from a divorce, he’s gun-shy about women. But when he meets a cute, curvy tour guide, he’s surprised by the chemistry between them. His ranch keeps him in Oregon, though, and Maggie’s Hollywood dreams keep her in L.A., a situation that can’t possibly work.
Maggie and Cliff search for happiness in the arms of others, but fate has other ideas. She can’t stop thinking about the rugged rancher, and when her life takes an unexpected turn, sending her back to her hometown of Portland, she’s forced to make some serious choices.
Maggie and Cliff both have dreams—and dreams are a wonderful thing—but what if they’re hoping for the wrong things, and love is waiting in the one place they’d never expect?
The front door squeaked open. First Maggie saw the steel-toed alligator skin boots and worked her way up to the Stetson cowboy hat perched on the guy’s tall, rugged frame. There was goatee stubble on his face. His hazel eyes were penetrating. He was undeniably hot.

Maggie was having a hard time breathing. Be cool. Cowboys were so not her type anyway. And what was one doing in Hollywood? Maybe he was an extra on something shooting nearby. If not, shouldn’t he be in Montana roping steer or something?
Sweat pooled in her armpits from running to work. She glanced at her reflection in the dark paneled door. Her hair was thrown up in a messy crow’s nest of a bun. And her uniform did her no favors. Pleated beige polyester pants and a loose green polo shirt would make anyone look dowdy.
The cowboy extended his hand. “Ma’am, I’m here for the movie studio tour.”
M.J. Greenway’s debut novel Dating Maggie was inspired by her years in Tinsel Town. Her passions have always included reading, writing and eating chocolate. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and son.

10 Facts about the book or the author

An Ill wind is the second in a series; a third is nearly done.

The author was an avid rider but was thrown from a horse three times.

Characters (besides the main ones) in book 0ne appear in book Two and new characters in book Two appear in the Third.

While the vast majority of characters in Book Two are adults, child characters play an important role in book Two.

While largely fiction, some of the events and people are true.

The story is set in Kansas, but the writer has never been to the state.

Women are strong characters not willing to play second fiddle to the men in their lives.

One of the main characters, Peter, gets distracted by attractive women but still pines for a young lady killed by outlaws.

Peggy, a main character once married to a failed business owner proves to be a successful store owner herself.

Book one ends with the suggestion of a wedding; book Two opens with one.

Snippet

The next day, the wind had been cleansed of the dust but was still strong. The cowardly sun hid behind the whiter clouds while dark thunderstorms moved in. The black cumulus stretched high in the air. Atwell had just left Peggy and the boy, and he looked upward. The top of the cloud spread into the shape of a blacksmith’s anvil and the rain began, pinging off the rooftops like low-caliber bullets. The sheriff went back inside and told Peggy about the coming storm and advised her to put the child in the back room, which had been added with stronger walls to hold the rows of shelving. Most of the customers had left, fearing being caught in a downpour. The sheriff sought out Jesse and Peter. He found the deputies having lunch in the hotel. “Bad storm,” the sheriff said in his usual style of few words. “Be best if we’re all out there in case it gets real bad.”

The deputies looked out the large window at the back of the hotel and saw debris begin to fly across the open field. Thunder sounded like cannons fired nearby and streaks of lighting cut across the sky with a few bolts pointed straight down like spears. When the three lawmen went outside, they saw town folks rushing indoors wherever they could. The crack of thunder rattled horses still tied to a rail. One animal broke free and ran down the street as if kicked. The rain came down in sheets. A huge cloud in the distance had a greenish-black base and the wind seemed to be pulled upward into the center of the cumulus. Atwell and his deputies stared at the single cloud which seemed to take over the sky. Air below was spinning. Soon a funnel formed, stretching down, but still well above the ground. White droplets fell out of the cloud; Sheriff Atwell knew it was hail. As the storm approached, the funnel widened and hovered just a few feet above the soil. The counter-clockwise winds snapped trees, splintering and launching wood in all directions. Laden with dirt and debris, the funnel darkened and reached down to touch the earth. A planted field just at the edge of town was a mass of swirling, newly emerging produce. By the time the twister was fully shaped and vertical, the width had reached over fifteen yards.

Ready for some great interview questions?
When did you know you wanted to write books?
The question always seems to come up, “When did I know I wanted to write books? For me, however, it’s not a simple answer.
I have always loved reading books and knew, like most people, that I probably had a book “in me,” that given the proper motivation would emerge. My “motivation,” for lack of a better word, showed up just over two years ago when I saw that my kids seemed to be tentative on breaking out from their comfort zones. Being a lead-by-example dad, I announced, “I’m writing a book.” I decided I liked writing books the first day into the process when my own pulse accelerated as I wrote the story.  This feeling was amplified tenfold when my kids loved what I was writing and kept asking, “What’s next?”
What does your writing process look like?
I would say my writing process closely resembles how a forensic pathologist reconstructs a face by using just a recovered skull. I have a picture in my mind of what the final form should look like and begin slowly adding layers. As the process progresses, I will perhaps tweak the cheekbones or the jaw line to fit my changing perspective of the story or of one or more characters.
