Review: To Tame the Wind by Regan Walker

All Claire Donet knew was the world inside the convent walls in Saint-Denis. She had no idea her beloved papa was a pirate. But when he seized Simon Powell’s schooner, the English privateer decided to take the one thing his enemy held most dear… her.

The waters between France and England roil with the clashes of Claire’s father and her captor as the last year of the American Revolution rages on the sea, spies lurk in Paris and Claire’s passion for the English captain rises.

This is the prequel to the Agents of the Crown trilogy but can be read as a stand alone.

REVIEW: This story has been sitting on my to-be-read list for a while and I think that I had built up too much anticipation, so I caved in and read it in THREE days. To Tame the Wind is such a beautiful historical romance. This story begins with Claire Donet, a convent girl, sneaking away to the grand masquerade. After escaping into the darkness, she realizes that someone has followed her. Claire’s decision to allow a little girl by the name of Elise to follow her to the masquerade haunts her for years. Soon after returning from that dreadfully cold and wet night after seeing her fill of gowns and one certain Golden Eagle, Elise dies from a bought of pneumonia. Upon Elise’s deathbed, Claire makes the solemn vow to live out her life the way that Elise would have if death had not come to sweep her away to the heavens. She makes the vow to become a nun once she comes of age so that she can teach children. As she lay sleeping one night, someone climbs up her window and makes away with her, leaving a note behind for her father. This kidnapping makes her rethink everything that she has thought about the past. What will her final decision be when she is returned to her father?

I absolutely loved reading about Claire and Simon. Both of these characters are so full of passion and morals. My favorite character within this story is Lady Danvers though. Lady Danvers is extremely compassionate and wants nothing more than the war to end, allowing peace for the Americans, French, and British. She is kind toward the American prisoners by providing them with blankets and food. Her and Clare assist with their injuries and take care of the children. Another favorite character of mine would have to be Jean Donet. He was a pirate and then transitioned to a privateer working to bargain British soldiers in exchange for American soldiers. With his demeanor and the love he has for his daughter, I really enjoyed reading about his character.

I recommend To Tame the Wind to anyone who enjoys historical romance novels. This is a truly beautiful and amazing story and I could not put it down. In my opinion, the pace was steady, but fast. I enjoy reading books that do not linger on certain aspects or scenes, so that factor was wonderful. I also feel that this author does a superb job with character development and credibility. The history that revolves around these two characters is astonishing. I rate To Tame the Wind with five stars and look forward to reading the next in her Agents of the Crown Series.

Excerpt + Review: My Perfect Imperfection by Jalpa Williby

Book Description:

I can’t talk. I can’t walk. I’m alive.
But, am I living?

My name is Lily Cooper, and I have Cerebral Palsy.
I can’t seem to control my muscles. My body refuses to cooperate.

I may be confined to my wheelchair, but my mind is sharp.
And I’m stubborn as hell.

I will not allow my disability to define me.
I will pave my own path in life.
I choose strength.
I choose to live.

Amazon / Goodreads

Excerpt: The rain slamming on the windshield is making it impossible to see clearly. I can tell she’s too upset to notice that she’s driving too fast, especially around the curves. I bite my bottom lip and swallow the scream from escaping when the van slips a few times. I don’t want to yell at her for fear that she’ll turn around to check on me while driving. Instead, I hold my breath and pray that she’ll slow down.
The headlights come from nowhere, blinding us. Where did they come from?
“Hold on, Lily!” she yells as she spins the steering wheel.
My heart stops beating when the van swerves out of control. I shut my eyes as the deafening sound of the screeching brakes and the crunching metal hits me like a tidal wave. The shattered glass tinkles around me, and everything moves in slow motion. As our van continues to spin, a deathly silence encases me.
I hear nothing. I feel nothing. I’m floating…and my life flashes before my eyes.

Review: This book is excellent! I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. My Perfect Imperfections is heartbreaking and raw, yet hopeful and courageous. This book is definitely one of my favorite reads this year. The emotional magnitude within this story has really stolen my breath away. We begin the journey with the birth of two twin girls, only one has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Her name is Lilly Cooper. When her sister, Layna rationalizes the differences between herself and Lilly, their bond begins to grow stronger. They become inseparable throughout their youth and even into their teenage years. Lilly has always defined herself by her disabilities, but Layna always encourages her to see the wonderful person who could do anything with that sharp mind of hers. Lilly can’t walk or talk…without her communication device. She can’t feed herself or use the restroom without assistance. The things that she accomplishes throughout her entire life is astounding though. She is absolutely brilliant and independent, out of defiance. She is fearful, yet passionate. When Lilly finally looks into the mirror and sees a glimpse of the beautiful woman that Layna has always seen, the wheelchair becomes almost invisible to her deception of capability. This moment that she has given herself, changes her whole view on life. She decides then…that she chooses strength, to truly live without fear of her disability failing her. It is hard work, but Lilly knows that it will be worth it.

My favorite characters are Layna, Chance and Lilly. The author does a superb job with the development of these three characters. Beginning with Layna, her personality is absolutely beautiful. With a heart as pure as hers, she never strays away from the love for her sister. The bond that Layna and Lilly share is enigmatic, full of raw emotion that really teared me up. Her stubbornness towards Lilly’s complaints made her strong and compassionate. The fact that she never wanted to leave her sister, even for college was also very courageous. Chance is my second favorite character. He is brave, affectionate, smart and witty. From the beginning of their friendship, Chance had always treated Lilly like an equal. His doubt and his avoidance to issues in his life are sad, yet hopeful. Then, there is Lilly. She is my favorite character. She is also beautiful in every way, even though she doesn’t see it at first. When Chance points it out to her, she then understands that she has so much more to offer then her dependency for someone else to take on. Her strength is what Chance leans on. She has the ease of making friends who truly love her. That brain of hers leads her through school to get her major. Her strive for independence allows her far more of a reach than others with Cerebral Palsy because she works hard. Overall, I really appreciate the adaptability of the author creating such imperfect characters make them so loving.

In my opinion, this story was exceptionally well-written. The descriptions are excellent and the originality is off the charts! I can’t seem to stop RAVING about it! The pace and credibility of the story are both on par; the pace is quick, but not at all difficult to keep up with. I rate My Perfect Imperfections with five stars and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading real life stories, inspirational and/or women’s fiction. Personally, I don’t know how this author was able to complete this story. I thank the author for allowing me this wonderful opportunity to read such a superb story and I hope that those reading this review will find it helpful in making the decision to pick it up and give it a read. I know that I will most definitely buy books written by this author in the future.

Excerpt: Ellora raced down the hallway as fast as her legs could carry her. Dread gripped her when she heard his heavy footsteps pounding on the hardwood floors behind her. His powerful presence echoed around the eerily empty house. It didn’t matter how fast she ran, he was always right on her heels. Ellora quaked violently when she made it to the stairs. If she couldn’t make it out of there, she’d never survive. Reaching out, Ellora gripped the railing with both hands and used the leverage to fly down the steps. She skipped so many at a time, it felt like flying. He thundered down the steps, after her. The smell of his rancid panting, snaked its way over her shoulder. The stench stung her nose. Ellora risked looking back. His large black eyes, vicious with a murderous rage she didn’t understand, were only a few feet behind her. He was close enough to grab her. Oh. My God, this is it. He reached out… and she lunged, taking a giant leap before she got to the last three steps. She successfully made it over the carpeted runner at the bottom. Her ankles stung as she landed hard, on her bare feet. Easily ignoring the pain, Ellora sprinted to the front door. She heard him land on the runner and crashed to the floor, as it slipped out from under him. Shaking, she fumbled with clumsy fingers, trying to unlock the deadbolt and door knob lock.

After several slips from her bloodied hands, she finally heaved open the door. She skidded on her own blood, which was trickling down her legs and pooling onto the floor. The cool air rushed in, sobering her. Chills raised goosebumps on her skin as she dashed out the door. Ellora looked back to make sure he wasn’t behind her. This action caused her to lose her balance, tripping down the driveway and crashing right into the car. She remembered leaving her it unlocked, so she wrenched it open and jumped inside. She immediately locked the doors in record speed. It took only a moment for her to get a grip on her debilitating panic. She frantically searched her pockets for the car keys. First the front, then the back. Ellora froze. A devastating hopelessness made her stomach drop when she realized that she left the keys in the house. She hung her head in defeat… BANG! BANG! BANG! The sudden violent pounding sent Ellora shooting out of her seat, frightened to death as he pulverized the glass window with his fists. He stopped his onslaught abruptly and pressed his face against the window. His disturbing eyes and malicious sneer held her captive. He lifted his hand presenting a set of keys and shook them. ‘NO!’

Review: I was provided with an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I honestly could not put this one down! I am such a fan of suspense and crime; therefore, this book fit right into my liking. The beginning of this story immediately captivated my attention and I was completely lost in the descriptions and scenes that unfolded thereafter. This story starts out with Ellora Belle Sutherland on a plane to Scotland. This is where her parents grew up and fell in love with each other. The fond memories that they both passed on to Ellora made her want to run there as a safe haven since he has made Syracuse, New York unsafe for her. The he is referring to Dalton Ramsey and yes, he is rich, dangerous and completely obsessed with Ellora. With her parents’ fatal car accident, she decides to go into hiding, but what she finds isn’t exactly what she is looking for. The little town of Skye is beautiful, especially the big Behr that instantly gains an attraction to the new gal that finds herself inside of a rundown pub, broken and fearful like she’s running away from the devil himself. She knows that she should stay under the radar, but everyone in the town gossips and soon knows that a girl from America is amongst them. With everyone being so nice and familiar, like family, she fits in and becomes comfortable with her surroundings fairly quick, especially when Adelle comes into town. With the fear of being found still on her mind, will she ever be free? Dalton’s words continuously haunt her when she closes her eyes at night. I will always find you, he whispers in her ear.

There are a few characters that I automatically fell in love with while reading Forever Marked. The first character that I sympathized with and really enjoyed reading about is the main character, Ellora (Lor) Belle Sutherland. She is brave, confident and clever. Her immediate action upon waking up in the hospital is that she is finally safe; however, when Dalton’s hired gun is there in her doctor’s attire, she knows that the only thing to do is run as far and as fast as she can. If she didn’t, he would have surely killed her for not submitting to his dark desires. Ellora’s confidence does waver from time to time, but overall, she is strong-willed and a survivalist. The second character that I really adored is Behr. He is the big brute that is quiet and inquisitive of Ellora when she first steps foot into Grady’s pub. Her luggage in hand and her fearful stance draw everyone to her, but he is the only one who makes the deeper connection with why she has found her way to Skye. His instant attraction to her is romantic and beautiful, but he still has his own demons to work through regarding an ex that still thinks she has her talons stuck deep within his heart. In a sense, both characters seem like they have the potential to be each other’s savors. Another character that I really despised, but he was described in such a terrific way is Giddeon. Giddeon was really able to etch his way under my skin with his evil and cold eyes, his ability to fight and his emotionless torture tactics. The other characters within this story that did play minor roles were very influential as well. Adelle is comical along with Patty. Grady and Kristy are genuinely accepting of Ellora, especially after hearing about her parents and their untimely death.

I recommend this book 100% to anyone who is interested in reading crime and/or suspense. This book is standalone, being the first in a series. I really enjoyed the author’s writing style and her descriptions were easy to see in my mind. The pace is fast, which I love! Forever Marked deserves five stars because it is original, entertaining, suspenseful and gripping. I am looking forward to the second in the series which will hopefully come out in 2016. Again, I thank the author for allowing me this wonderful opportunity to read this terrific book and I hope that you’ll find this review helpful in making your decision to read this book.

They had hardwood floors. She could mop. She should mop. Except it was a crime scene. You didn’t just mop up a crime scene. There were procedures to follow and—her stomach heaved suddenly, and she whirled, her foot sliding in the spreading blood as she scrambled for the trash bin. She’s still in the dress she wore to their engagement party, her hair half down in, makeup smudged.
Hair falls in the trashcan, and she gags as vomit catches in it.
She straightened slowly and made a face. Wonderful. There was now a dead body on the floor and vomit in her hair. The night was definitely on a downward spiral.
There is a sharp knock on the front door, but Charlie doesn’t move to answer.
She shouldn’t have called Ella, but it happened before she could think, while Wallace was still gasping, his eye shocked and angry while she fumbled for her phone and stood over him.
The voice breaks the cocoon of distance, and she draws in a shuddering breath.
“Oh holy fuck.” EJ breathes the curse like a prayer and stumbles across the room to grab Charlie, yanking her around. Her eyes and hands are frantic as she looks over the other woman, and a hysterical giggle works it’s way up Charlie’s throat and bubbles over.
EJ goes still and watchful, her sharp blue eyes locked onto Charlie’s. “Charlie, I need you to focus on me. Tell me what happened.”
The words snap her laughter off and Charlie shudders, a full body spasm that makes EJ’s hands on her shoulders tighten for a heartbeat.

PLEASE NOTE: Only You is a Contemporary Romance with intense language and sexual situations meant for readers 18 and up. goodreads

Prologue: Paige

My eyelids were weak and heavy. All I did now was sleep, but I was still too tired to wake up. I didn’t even remember how I got here.

It took a pathetic amount of strength to lift my head and glance over the tray of food. I wasn’t sure what time it was, but pretty sure it was late. Why they thought I wanted crackers now was beyond me. They can’t really expect me to eat, can they? Swallowing anything was torturous thanks to the deep open sores that trailed down my throat. Water burned, so the thought of eating anything was as appealing as chowing down on sandpaper—and would probably feel the same going down.

I curled into the fetal position as I shivered and rubbed at my skin to get warm and felt the pointy bone through the flesh of my arms. I reached for the covers and winced at the pain fingers as I gathered up the scratchy fabric and pulled it over my aching shoulders.

It hurt to move. It hurt to breathe. Most of all, it hurt to think.

The life I wanted, with the man I wanted, haunted my dreams.

You own me. Can’t you see that?

You’re mine. You’re everything.

I…can’t see my future with anyone else but you.

I finally found what I’d been looking for my entire life, but I couldn’t keep it.

The sound of voices yelling outside my hospital room snatched me out of my thoughts. I pushed myself up, panting at the exertion it took to sit upright. I leaned back on my elbows and my weak heart leaped in my chest when I recognized the voice causing all the commotion outside—the voice I’d know anywhere.

“I need to see her, please.”

Evan? No, no, no. I didn’t want him to see me like this. How did he find out I was here?

“I’m sorry, sir. Immediate family only. This is the ICU.”

“I’m not leaving. Paige? Daisy, it’s me!” My heavy head dropped to my hands. The sobs that ran through me made it difficult to breathe thanks to the oxygen tubes filtering through my nose. Pushing him away was the hardest thing I ever had to do, but I did it for him.

I didn’t want to let him go. I wanted him to hold me, tell me he loved me and know he would never leave me. I wanted that so fucking much it ached.

“Sir, please. She’s a very sick girl.”

In time, he’d see. He deserved someone who could give him a life, children, and a future. All things I can’t offer him, no matter how much I wished things were different. He deserved better than this, better than me.

The door was half closed but opened with such force that it banged into the wall and made me jump. Evan marched up to my bed and took my face in his hands. His hay colored eyes filled with tears as his hands shook.

“I love you, and I’m not going anywhere.” His voice quivered with emotion, but I wasn’t sure if it was sadness, rage, or a combination of the two.

“Now, you’re going to tell me exactly what’s going on. And why you lied to me—”

As Pierce is being pulled back to England, his desperate situation turns around when he’s saved by a crew of Apache privateers known as the Sea Warriors. And instead of fleeing with his seabound mates, Pierce decides to return to England to try to save his old friend, Indigo.
Going back means Pierce will encounter old dangers…as well as face a past he’d much rather leave behind.

“There’s so much action, so much adventure, and more than that, it’s great writing.”—USA Today

“SiranthaJax fans may be intrigued to see what befell Jael after his ill-considered actions there, and new lead Dred is a strong linchpin for a promising new series.”—Publishers Weekly

“Spectacularly and spell-bindingly perfect with high octane action that keeps you on the edge of your seat and a romance that is surprisingly sweet and tender in a harsh and unforiving setting…This is honestly one of the best SF romance series I have read.” —Book Pushers
